The Guiana Shield Facility Tagline: Promoting conservation Supporting sustainable development

The Guiana Shield Size: 2.7 million km 2 Low population 8 million: rich cultural diversity Largest complex of uninterrupted, intact primary tropical forests One of the richest tropical wilderness areas on Earth Great variety of ecosystems, some are not found anywhere else High biodiversity values Key watershed region for the Amazon and Orinoco basins 10-15% of world s freshwater Significant carbon sequestration ~500 million t/year

Wise words H.E. Braulio Dias, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, 2013.the Guiana Shield Ecoregion, the area that concentrates the largest amount of tropical forest under protected areas in the world, but one that is increasingly facing the challenges of promotion of economic development while ensuring the conservation of its natural capital and increasing the benefits for its people from its rich biodiversity.

Programming for conservation & sustainable development Ecoregional Objectives Programmatic Implementation Local - Livelihood - Socio-cultural survival - Security GSF as Vehicle & Fund Support national/local priorities Leverage natural capital for development Safeguards & standards National - Natural capital - Data & information - Strategies & Plans Strategic Cooperation National ownership Transboundary cooperation Capacity development Networking Regional - Strategic cooperation - Ecosystem services; e.g. rainwater conveyancing Guiana Shield Priority Setting Platform Forestry & Remote Sensing Exchange Network Water Views & Information Network in the Guiana Shield Guiana Shield Foundation for Biodiversity & IBG

Operating Premise of the GSF Provision of incentives for the preservation and conservation of the ecological and social values of the Guiana Shield ecoregion towards ensuring the long-term delivery of its globally important ecosystem services will contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable human development, especially for forest dependent communities
