2 The Andes range mountains The Andes are approximately 7,000 km long and are the world s longest terrestrial mountain range, running parallel along the entire west coast of South America.

4 Andean Mountain Initiative The Andean Mountain Initiative (AMI) was born under the framework of the Mountain Partnership as a regional platform integrated by the seven countries of the Andes mountain range: Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

5 Andean Mountain Initiative Main Purpose The articulation of several actions, strategies, and policies that are being implemented in the mountain areas of the Andean countries at regional, national, and local levels, in order to achieve an adequate complementation of resources and capacities for a better convergence between public and private, national, regional, and international levels, with the aim of designing and implementing comprehensive mountain policies.

6 Andean Mountain Initiative The Process Andean countries established the Andean Mountain Initiative as a mechanism for coordination between countries Declaration and Action Plan of Tucuman Declaration of Bariloche: Suggests the creation of a Regional Coordination Mechanism Ratified the need for a Regional Coordination Mechanism. Working group is designated The proposal of the Regional Coordination Mechanism is presented to the countries.

7 Andean Mountain Initiative The Process The Andean countries approved the instances of the regional coordination mechanism and the Mechanism implementation: Assembly of Countries (7 countries) Regional Coordination (Chile ) Approval the Terms (CONDESAN) of Reference of the Technical TechnicalofSecretariat Secretariat In progress: Final approval of the operation protocol of the Regional Coordination Mechanism Update of the Action Plan of Tucuman for its implementation in 2019 Definition of actions in order to implement the Strategic Agenda on Climate Change Adaptation in the Andes

8 Action Plan for Sustainable Development of Andean Mountains Action Plan of Tucuman Main Purpose 1. Sustainable Livelihoods in mountain areas 2. Conservation of ecosystems and preservation of biodiversity and cultural and national heritage 3. Institutional capacity building on mountain issues Consolidacio n de la capacidad institucional 4. Climate change en montañas and its impacts in mountain areas 5. Transversal axes such as education, awareness and training, gender, youth and senior citizens, networking and local participation.

9 Strategic Agenda on Climate Change Adaptation in the Andes Objectives and measures: 1. Vulnerable groups and communities 2. Agriculture 3. Water resources and Hydrology 4. Mountain ecosystems and biodiversity 5. Risks to health 6. Disaster risk management systems 7. Industries 8. Scientific, social, and environmental research 9. Capacities and awareness 10.Regional cooperation

10 Next steps Next meeting of the Andean Initiative will be held in Ecuador the 19th & 20th of November. We are working on the update of the Action Plan of Tucuman. With UN Environment we will work on establish concrete actions in order to implement the Strategic Agenda on Climate Change Adaptation in the Andes. Next meeting to be held in Ecuador the 21 th of November.
