NEWS SPECIAL PROJECTS TO EMPOWER ANDHRA TOURISM The Government of Andhra Pradesh plans to develop Pattiseema as a tourism hub and make Shilparamam units self-reliant. In keeping with their objective of enhancing Pattiseema s tourism potential, the state government plans to introduce a project that will be divided into five zones arts and crafts, play area, go-carting arena, a food zone, and a golf course. 6 NEWS AP TOURISM HOSTS FOOD FEST The department aims at earning GI status for famous local delicacies. In June, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) organised a seven-day food festival on Andhra cuisines at The Gateway Hotel, Vijayawada. The weeklong event, inaugurated by Tourism Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena, provided an opportunity for tourists and citizens to sample 50 different delicacies, indigenous to the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh from spicy Bongu chicken to sugary putarekulu. A special officer has also been appointed to promote Andhra cuisines in the state. We have also decided to hold a food festival every month and promote them at an international level, said the Tourism Secretary. Andhra Pradesh so far has Geographical Indication (GI) for Tirupati laddu. The tourism department is now aiming to get a GI status for putarekulu, a traditional East Godavari sweet. GANNAVARAM AIRPORT GETS A KONDAPALLI PACHYDERM In its efforts to promote Kondapalli toys, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) has installed an 18-feet-tall image of a colourful ambari elephant one of the most famous toys in the Kondapalli collection in front of the departure block of the international airport at Gannavaram. The four-tonne statue was carved by the chief artisan Rangachari from Srikalahasti with help from other artisans. The entire statue is carved out of wood. Amaravati has the Buddha statue, Visakhapatnam has beaches, and Tirupati has the Lord Venkateswara temple. Vijayawada did not have a mascot of its own, and we thought the ancient toy-making craft of Kondapalli would be ideal for the purpose, says APTA CEO Himanshu Shukla. VIZAG TO HOST IATO CONVENTION IN SEPTEMBER The 34th Annual Convention of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) has been planned from 6-9 September 2018 at the Novotel Hotel Visakhapatnam. 9 ARAKU Valley, located on the edge of Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam district, is a famous yet less-explored destination. There are hills, waterfalls, caves, tribes, and plantations for one to see. 10 MUST DO MONSOON DIARIES As the rains descend on Andhra Pradesh, it s time to get outdoorsy and explore the state s many hidden gems. Try nature trailing and savour scenic vistas as you make your way up the hills or spend an evening by the now-blessed lakes and waterfalls. As a special treat, enjoy a cup of steaming hot Araku coffee with delicious local snacks after an invigorating downpour. HEAD FOR THE HILLS 1The lush hills and valleys of Andhra Pradesh are a mesmerising sight during the monsoon. Take a road trip to Horsley Hills in Chittoor district or board the glass-domed Vistadome headed to the beautiful Araku Valley in Visakhapatnam. With every drizzle, the hills become more verdant, fragrant (the aroma from surrounding coffee plantations fills the air), and musical an ideal setting for a memorable, picturesque vacation. LIVE LIKE A LOCAL 3Opt for a home-stay to enjoy the rainy season like a local! You can cycle through the region s green belts or take a stroll along the beach and sample sumptuous street delicacies such as mirapakaya bajji (stuffed green chillis). Make sure you carry the right gear for your stay, since it may rain throughout the day. PICNIC AT A WATERFALL 2Experience the refreshing spray of the countless waterfalls dotting the state. Set amid dense forests, some of the most gorgeous spots include Talakona in Chittoor district, Ethipothala in Guntur district, and the falls in the Maredumilli reserve forest in East Godavari district. Papikondalu in West Godavari district is also worth a visit. 4 GET SET TO HIT THE TRAILS Explore the state s lesser-known trekking routes, especially the one at Jindhagada Peak. Located near the Araku bus stand, this 8-kilometrelong trek offers stunning views of the countryside and takes about six hours to complete. Take in the sights in Nagalapuram, a small historic town in Chittoor district, famous for the Sri Vedanarayana Swamy Temple and waterfall trekking.

TRY AGRI-TOURISM 5The 125-acre, lush green, organic vegetable and horticulture integrated farm in Hampapuram in Anantapur district makes you look forward to getting your hands dirty. Recognised as an agri-tourism destination, this model organic farm is the best place to enjoy rural tourism by participating in some sheep rearing and dairy farming activities, while also celebrating harvest festivals. It is also an educational centre for farmers to learn farm mechanisation, organic farming, and the marketing and export of produce. JOURNEY INTO THE STATE S PAST 6Take advantage of the low temperatures and explore the state s wet bylanes leading to ancient Buddhist sites and magnificent forts and structures known for their glorious past and architecture. We recommend the Kondapalli Fort in Krishna district, the Adoni Fort in Kurnool district, and the primeval monuments on the Pandavula Metta hillock in Srikakulam district. GO ON A WELLNESS RETREAT 7After a long and often exhausting summer, the monsoons are an ideal time for some welldeserved rejuvenation and relaxation. Check into any one of Andhra Pradesh s many luxury hotels with world-class spas for an unforgettable wellness vacation. Indulge in some spa therapy with services that incorporate Ayurveda practices (including customised diets based on your dosha) to a variety of massage packages and treatments. SPOT THE BUTTERFLIES 8The Biodiversity Park in Visakhapatnam hosts several butterflies migrating from the Western Ghats between July and September. The phenomenon is also seen in the districts of East Godavari, West Godavari and Vizianagaram districts since the environment matches that of the Biodiversity Park. Keep an eye out for beautiful species such as blue tiger, plain tiger, banded orange, glassy tiger, and common crow. ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER

COUNTY A MIGHTY RIVER, A QUAINT LITTLE TOWN, PALM-FRINGED ROADS, SOOTHING BACKWATERS AND FINGER-LICKING FOOD CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF KONASEEMA AND MAKE DINDI, A PRETTY RESORT-VILLAGE, IDEAL FOR A QUIET GETAWAY. AS THE RAINY SEASON COOLS THE AIR, THE REGION S CHARMS ARE ENHANCED WITH OVERCAST SKIES AND THE LUSHEST GREENERY ONE CAN IMAGINE. BY SHIBANI BAWA

monsoon and you can add mist to the verdant landscape, refreshing spells of showers, and even some unique seasonal specialities to savour. The name Konaseema comes from the word kona that is Telugu for corner, while seema means border. A fertile delta land, it was formed by the two main tributaries of Godavari Gautami Godavari in the north and Vashishta Godavari in the south. The entire region is, thus, rich with paddy fields, mango groves, and cashew and coconut trees. And Dindi, in the East Godavari district, encapsulates Konaseema s spectacular scenery, with cloud-cloaked mountains rising behind green paddy fields and wide stretches of tranquil countryside. Although this quaint little town isn t off-the-beaten path, its relatively remote location has helped it retain its laid-back atmosphere. It offers many interesting activities for tourists interested in exploring its unique charms. KONASEEMA IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PART OF ANDHRA PRADESH. Parts of it are reminiscent of the captivating scenes of gorgeous landscapes one sees and admires in movies: a long, scenic road flanked by palm trees and red soil on either side, with not another car in sight for miles! As we drove along this pleasing vista, we could almost picture a romantic song being filmed here, with the lead couple cycling and singing gaily. Perhaps there is music in the air, too the wind blows through tall palms, exotic birds chirp, and a farmer hums while working the paddy field! Come CRUISE DOWN THE RIVER Although the backwaters of Konaseema don t have dense mangroves, you will find lovely, abundant coconut gardens, small islands, and lagoons. A backwater cruise is ideal for a picnic on one of these quiet islands, where the only signs of construction are a couple of thatched huts that provide refuge from the scorching heat of the sun. If the time is right, ask your guide to point out the multicoloured birds dotting the skies and the freshwater fish swimming alongside your boat. Our afternoon cruise, for instance, was ideal for just sitting back and soaking in the pristine beauty of the place while the sun cast a golden glow on all that the eyes could see. The cool breeze on our faces was like the cherry on the cake. You can enhance your experience of the backwaters by booking and staying overnight on a houseboat. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) offers air-conditioned and fullyfurnished houseboats. These boats have two bedrooms with attached bathrooms and a beautiful bay window to enjoy the changing scenery as the houseboat glides along the river. There is also a sit-out and dining area on the deck. You have the option of going ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER

upstream from Dindi till Rajolu or downstream to Narsapur. THE CONFLUENCE Evening beckons a beautiful sunset at a very special spot. The Sagara Sangamam (confluence with the ocean) is where the holy Godavari river, after cutting across most of the Deccan Plateau, gently flows into the Bay of Bengal. Seeing these two mighty and distinct water bodies becoming one makes for a mesmerising sight. But I am shaken out of my reverie when my companion views a dolphin through his camera. Soon we spot another dolphin and realise there are four handsome dolphins frolicking in the waters. I am told these beautiful creatures particularly enjoy the varying temperatures of the two waters. Not surprisingly, the beach is a popular spot among locals for picnics, and we even saw people riding bikes and motorcycles along the undulating coastline. A SPIRITUAL SOJOURN A short drive from the confluence is the Antarvedi Temple, dedicated to Lord Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, one of Lord Vishnu s incarnations. Located near Vashishta river, in East Godavari region, this temple is highly revered. Its five-storeyed Vimana Gopuram is decorated with brightly coloured statuettes of deities and apsaras, making it an architectural delight. Apart from the aforementioned presiding deity, it is also home to the deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. As one goes around the sanctum sanctorum, one can see the Dashavataram, the ten incarnations of the Lord, while the second level is home to the Saptha Maharishis. Unlike From left: Sterling Dindi resort; Coconut Country Resort in Dindi. many other temples of this region, you can climb to the top of the temple to take in a panoramic view of the surrounding area. EAT, EAT, EAT We simply can t rave enough about the food that Andhra Pradesh offers. With all the wonderfully spicy and tangy vegetable preparations, delicious meats, an array of seafood, decadent biryani, and delectable pickles and condiments to choose from, one just cannot get enough of the local cuisine. In addition, the East Godavari region has some unique specialties of its own, such as Korameenu, the local, single-boned fish found only in the local canals, and the seasonal Bommidayalu fish. However, even the simplest of dishes will leave you licking your fingers. The garlicky dal fry or tangy coconut fry are enough to make for a succulent meal with rice. And if you get a chance, do try the local sweets. Putarekulu became an instant favourite! Made with ghee, jaggery, and dry fruit, it is a nutrition-packed dessert. The rainy season brings with it a special delicacy, the Pulasa fish. The fish that breeds in East Godavari during the monsoon season has a much richer taste and aroma, making it almost four times costlier than other fish! Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, the fish is used in various regional recipes and will leave you licking your fingers. THE DETAILS GETTING THERE The nearest airport is at Rajahmundry, around 75 km from Dindi. Other accessible airports are Vijayawada (160 km) and Visakhapatnam (200 km). The nearest train station is Palakollu (14 km). The nearest bus terminal is Rajolu. Buses are available from Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. STAY OPTIONS Haritha Coconut Country Resort in Dindi is a deluxe resort on the banks of river Godavari. It has a lovely swimming pool nestled amidst a lush lawn overlooking the river. Most rooms feature private balconies overlooking the river and palm-lined walkways. The Sterling Dindi resort also features plush rooms, and a spa, restaurant, swimming pool, and bar. BEST TIME TO VISIT While the main tourist season in Konaseema runs from October to March, with December and January being peak months, we recommend the rainy season to experience the unmatched beauty of the coconut country. 16 ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER 2018

INITIATIVE GET CLOSER TO YOUR ROOTS Experience the hospitality of Andhra Pradesh s quaint villages with Project Sanskriti a rural tourism initiative promising meaningful and memorable vacations. Clockwise from above: Tourists experience how life is like on a cattle farm, paddy field, and as a Kalamkari artist. The two main purposes of responsible tourism include learning about the planet, its people and its many facets, and making a positive impact during one s travels. Lola Snackers and Allan Waterman of Belgium recently embarked on one such journey of learning and discovery to Madhavamala, a picturesque village in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Located near Srikalahasti, the village is home to around 1,000 families, each known for their exceptional woodcarving skills. The magnificence of the wood products made here idols, utility items, and décor attracts admirers from across the globe. The two travelling Belgians were not only witness to the hard work that goes into creating these works of art, but also learned a thing or two about farming, rearing cattle, and painting clothes. The best experience, however, was sitting at a traditional, roadside eating point and tasting the local fare; the Rayalaseema cuisine was an adventure for our taste buds, the travellers said. A haven for tourists looking for newer experiences in rural tourism, the villages of Andhra Pradesh offer activities of all kinds. Stay in pristine and peaceful villages to experience the simple lifestyle and practices of the people, enjoy bird watching, fishing, bullock cart rides, boating and trekking, and witness artisans creating exquisite pieces of art. The ancient forts and temples, serene lakes, and shimmering rivers and streams are just some of the other delights that are a part of Project Sanskriti, an Andhra Pradesh government initiative to boost rural tourism. The aim of Project Sanskriti is to create awareness of Andhra s rich art and craft heritage, and lay a path for sustainable development. Apart from providing tourists the chance of observing nature and local ways of life, specially arranged home-stays in the villages and interactive experiences with their inhabitants are designed to help study, monitor, train, support, and mobilise the rural community. The government has roped in private agencies to offer packages in 12 villages Srikalahasti, Madhavamala, Venkatagiri, Lepakshi, Veerapuram, Nimmalakunta, Dindi, Narsapur, Uppada, Prakritivanam agro-farms, Horsley Hills and Angallu. HIGHLIGHTS SRIKALAHASTI: This tiny town in Chittoor district is known for the exquisite Kalamkari style of textile printing (granted a Geographical Indication tag) and woodcarvings. Seeing the artisans create beautiful artifacts is a truly visual treat. UPPADA: Famous for Jamdani silk sarees, this village in East Godavari district is registered as one of the GIs from Andhra Pradesh. Uppada Jamdani sarees are known for their lightweight drape and intricate embellishment. HORSLEY HILLS: One of the state s most popular hill resorts, this beautiful summer destination features lush vegetation and rich fauna. Art lovers must visit the nearby city of Madanapalle, famous for its terracotta pottery and applique work. ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER

Underground Gallery BELUM CAVES KURNOOL Not many tourist destinations boast a cave system that can be accessed without apprehension. The Rayalaseema region, home to the magnificent Belum Caves, however, is a remarkable exception. Discovered in 1884 and opened to the public in 2002, these caves are believed to date back to about 4,500 BC when an underground river washed away the soft limestone surfaces of the surrounding rocks. This process, over the course of several years, led to the formation of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Make your way down into the caves to see this stunning sight and explore the enormous network of interlinked chambers. Noted as India s second largest cave complex, the site features bright, colourful LED lamps and oxygen pumps that are used to present a great show to visitors.

WHERE TO GO A PLACE WITH HISTORY Kurnool, the capital of Andhra Pradesh between 1953 and 1956, has a varied selection of tourism options for travellers on the go. Deivanai Arunachalam captures the quintessential spots to visit in the city on a two-day road trip. Bordered by the lush green, rolling slopes of the Nallamalla and the Erramala Hills, Kurnool offers rustic views of Rayalaseema, the state s southern region. Images of fiery earth, black soil, glistening water bodies, grassy hills, dramatic monsoon clouds, and intricate architecture linger in your mind long after the visit. An early start gives travellers the advantage of visiting relatively unheard of locations in the district, enabling them to get a flavour of the place in all its glory. GOD S OWN LAND Rich in religious and mythological relevance, Kurnool is home to the sacred site of Ahobilam. It is here that Lord Vishnu is believed to have incarnated as Lord Narasimha to protect His supreme devotee Prahlada from Hiranyakashyapu. One of the 108 holy shrines of the Vaishnavites, Ahobilam is highly revered for the Lord s extraordinary power. There was a time when the terrain of this area was so difficult and overrun by wild creatures that if a pilgrim ventured to Ahobilam, people would wonder if he would ever return. Over the years, however, the religious institution in charge of the temple has paved roads to facilitate ease of access to the nine divine sanctums in the Nallamalla Hills each sanctum depicts a form of Lord Narasimha. Of the nine, two of the temples can be reached only by foot; determination, stamina, a sense of adventure, and a heart that pines to get a glimpse of the Lord will get you there. Another important temple in Kurnool district, Yaganti or the Sri Uma Maheswara Temple, dedicated to the fiery Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is surrounded by mountains, caves and water. Three of the caves are of immense religious interest the Venkateswara Cave is home to an idol of Lord Venkateswara, who is believed to have visited it on His way to the town of Tirumala. The cave can be accessed by a steep, five-minute climb. The Agastya Cave takes longer to reach according to legend, this is where Sage Agastya s penance was disturbed by crows. The sage flew into a rage, casting a curse on the crows, preventing them From top: Ahobilam temple; Orvakallu Rock Garden. PHOTO CREDIT 22 ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER 2018

from entering the temple thereafter. Interestingly, crows do not fly over the temple to this day. The third cave is believed to be where Potuluri Veera Brahman, India s Nostradamus, wrote some chapters of his book of predictions, Kala Gnanam. PLUNGE INTO THE DEPTHS After a quick bow to the Lord, we headed for Belum Caves, located 125 kilometres from Kurnool. While one may imagine caves to be narrow, dark, and dingy, this is not the case with Belum. Spacious, well lit, and fitted with oxygen pumps, the caves turned out to be a rare outing for the whole family. Since the caves are 20 feet deep and stretch over 3,200 metres, a relaxed expedition is likely to take about two hours. After the expedition, make your way to the unassuming canteen on the highway, opposite the entrance to the Belum Caves, to sample a lip-smacking Andhra meal paruppu podi (lentil) with rice, beetroot, brinjal, pappu (mashed pulses), rasam (a broth infused with jaggery and tamarind), and curd. ROCKS AND BEYOND The village of Orvakallu, 25 km from Kurnool, is a delight for lovers of silica and quartz, and is widely known for the Orvakallu Rock Garden, a sprawling expanse of fascinating rock formations, peppered with little pools of water. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation s Haritha Hotel in Orvakallu offers convenient proximity to the rock garden. Other quick stopovers from Kurnool include the quaint Nawab Palace in Banaganapalli. Built in 1865, the redstone palace stands atop a little hill, its exquisite, intricate construction attracting attention from far and wide. The Rollapadu Sanctuary, 60 km from Kurnool, is yet another engaging destination. Home to the endangered Great Indian Bustard, the sanctuary is a dry grassland that is best visited between September and February. If you re visiting Kurnool during or after the monsoons, the majestic Srisailam Dam, built along the Krishna river, is a sight to behold. For history enthusiasts, a visit to the Konda Reddy Buruju, an impressive fort in the heart of Kurnool, is a must. Just about 70 km away is the Nallamalai Jungle Camp. This initiative of the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve aims to build local support for wildlife and impart conservation education to visitors through their eco-tourism programmes. Clockwise: Srisailam dam; the pond at Yaganti temple in Kurnool. NAVIGATOR GETTING THERE The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is the nearest airport. Kurnool is well connected to Hyderabad (240 km), Bengaluru (381 km) and Chennai (530 km) by road and rail. PHOTO CREDIT WHERE TO STAY The rooms at APTDC s Haritha resort at Orvakallu are designed like cottages and serve delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Another good option is APTDC s Haritha Hotel at Gandikota, which is 60 km from Belum Caves. ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER

TEXTILES THE WARP AND WEFT OF ALL THAT S BEST Blessed with a rich textile tradition, Andhra Pradesh is home to an enviable selection of drapes. Deivanai Arunachalam reports on the five most popular types of sarees that now hold a special place in the wardrobes of many. In an era of ever-expanding technical expertise, true craftsmanship stands out like the rising sun. It defines the artist s understanding of materials, their deftness in weaving, and the bond they have with a craft that has been passed on for generations. For examples of such craftsmanship, one must head to the saree-weaving towns of Andhra Pradesh. It is here that these iconic craft clusters continue their tradition with pride, making the garment an object of versatility, richness, texture, history, and longevity. UPPADA Hailing from and named after Uppada, a small coastal town of East Godavari, Uppada pattu are remarkably fine silk sarees, famous for their unique designs and contrasting colours. Awarded a Geographic Indication (GI) status, these sarees are a favourite on grand occasions and are known for their lightweight, delicate drape and strong sheen. The saree is woven using the three-century-old Jamdani style a technique that can be traced back to Bangladesh, whose weavers migrated to Uppada with their craft. The weave is manual, requires two artisans at a time, and can take up to eight weeks to weave. Silver thread dipped in molten gold is used to embellish the pallu (border). A bridal saree can set one back by as much as `3 lakh; the simpler sarees range from `5,000 to `80,000. DHARMAVARAM Dharmavaram sarees spell unabashed grandeur, both in terms of the colours and the zari. A bustling town in the state s Anantapur district, Dharmavaram, too, has the distinction of not only manufacturing sarees endowed with a GI status, but, more importantly, considered to be the perfect choice for bridal wear. The most striking aspect of this saree is the purity of the mulberry silk yarn that is sourced from within the district. The zari, usually made from one gram gold, is deployed lavishly in the making of the sarees. K. Mallikarjuna, head of a weaving unit associated in Dharmavaram, says, Any design can be recreated at two months notice. Interestingly, a saree priced at `6,000 at his unit retails for almost twice the price. MANGALAGIRI Crisp, airy, dainty, and elegant, a Mangalagiri saree tempts the saree buff with its unmatched woven, golden border. Located 13 km away from Vijayawada, Mangalagiri is famous for its vibrant cottons with gold or copper thread work. The 24 ANDHRA PRADESH JOURNEYS JULY SEPTEMBER 2018

ANDHRA PRADESH HAS A HISTORY OF WEAVING A VARIETY OF GREAT SAREES. VENKATAGIRI, UPPADA, MANGALGIRI, DHARMAVARAM AND KALAMKARI SAREES ARE NOT ONLY TRADITIONAL AND ELEGANT, BUT ALSO ONE OF THE BEST SOUVENIRS FROM THE STATE. classy simplicity of the saree makes it the choice of many for everyday wear. Earthy mustards, lemony greens, cool blues, flaming oranges, and tantalising pinks are all treated to starched uprightness. Interesting textures are created with stripes and checks in harmonious tones. There s always room for greater innovation many boutiques bring their own whims to life by printing and embroidering their designs on on the versatile Mangalagiri. The cost of a Mangalagiri cotton saree ranges between `750 and `2,000. PHOTO CREDIT PONDURU Another incredibly classy and elegant saree from Andhra Pradesh, Ponduru cotton saree reinforces one s Indian-ness, reminiscent as it is of rustic scenes and local essence. The pride of Srikakulam district, Ponduru is made of exquisite khadi. Since the khaddar (a variety of cotton) is handmade, the fabric retains its endearing appeal. The ethnic cotton pieces feature vibrant hues and exhibit a matte finish. Borders and pallus in contrasting colours are the norm. Priced at `700 and upwards, the Ponduru sarees appeal to those seeking cultured simplicity. Clockwise: A weaver holding silk yarn near a village in Kakinada; unfinished Dharmavaram sarees; an artist doing kalamkari on a saree in Andhra Pradesh. VENKATAGIRI Venkatagiri, a small town in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, makes comfortable and sober cotton, silk, and cotton-silk sarees. Having been conferred the GI status, Venkatagiri sarees were originally woven in handloom units; power looms have now reduced the time and effort to weave a saree. From being purely elitist in the past (these sarees were woven exclusively for royals and aristocrats), the sarees have now made their way to the wardrobes of the common woman. The silkcotton sarees have a shimmer that makes them stand out, and motifs are common all through the six yards of fabric. These sarees are durable and apt for festivities and religious celebrations. 26 ART & CRAFT A TOUCH OF GOLD The village of Chilakalapudi near Machilipatnam in Krishna district is renowned for its exceptional imitation jewellery, and draws admirers from across the world. By Deepika Khurana Sitting on the banks of Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh is the ancient town of Machilipatnam, or the erstwhile Masulipatnam. An all-season tourist destination, it is home to the famous Manginapudi Beach, beautiful temples, and a church. At first glance, the picturesque port town comes across as ordinary, but a deeper look into its history provides a better understanding of its glorious art heritage specifically, its intricate Kalamkari textiles and paintings, delicious bandar laddu, and, remarkable imitation jewellery. Chilakalapudi, a quaint little village, serves as the base for this famous craft, which involves manufacturing jewellery that replicates pure-gold creations through traditional techniques, such as one-gram gold and rolled-gold plating. These beautiful, traditional ornaments, popularly known as Chilakalapudi Bangaram, are handmade, durable, lightweight, low cost, and skin friendly. In case of its most sought-after, one-gram gold jewellery, the delight is in the details. The elaborate process involves casting a piece of brass (earlier, copper was used), hand polishing, pure-gold plating, stone gumming, and meenakari (enamelling), besides other ornamentations. Depending on the design and weight, the brass piece is given a puregold plating of up to one gram. The rolled-gold jewellery, however, is made by rolling a copper sheet in gold. From top: A one-gram gold necklace; artists working in a jewellery-making unit in Chilakalapudi, Machilipatnam. THE JEWELLERY-MAKING JOURNEY It is believed that around 150 years ago, a Vishwa Brahmin named Appala Chari migrated to Chilakalapudi and began crafting imitation-gold jewellery for people who could not afford pure-gold ornaments. Since then, the people of Machilipatnam have been replicating gold designs, with embellishments such as pearls and enamelling, commercially. The skill has been handed down the generations, and employs numerous households. Over the years, Machilipatnam s jewellery business has

transformed in terms of material, patterns and designs, and demand. While the traditional South Indian collections of deity, dance, and temple jewellery remain popular, more and more buyers are looking for something unique. During my grandfather s time, the commonest metal used was copper. The metal, then priced `60 per kg, now costs `700 per kg which is why the industry has moved towards more economically viable alternatives, says Subbu Thotta of Usha Gold Plating Works. The patterns and designs have changed, too. These days, customers ask for jewellery inspired by pieces they have seen in movies. Unlike yesteryears, they come with snapshots of their favourite jewellery designs. ORGANISED INDUSTRY Today, Chilakalapudi has an organised jewellery trade run by about registered manufacturing units, operating in the Machilipatnam Imitation Jewellery Park. The units churn out multiple collections of jewels with flawless finish, unmatched craftsmanship, and a glitter of gold. In addition to the craftsmanship, the price tag of these jewels is extraordinary, too. A 600-gram, goldplated wedding set is priced at an extremely affordable `1,500! Diamond lovers can purchase an elegant, cubiczirconia-studded neckpiece for a mere one-tenth of the cost of the real set. The challenge, however, comes from the Chinese and Korean faux fashion jewellery that has flooded the markets in the recent past. The resultant decline in sales has forced many artisans to turn towards other professions. Currently, only 40 per cent of the local community is part of the business. To help the industry, the Machilipatnam Imitation Jewellery Park Members Welfare Association has applied for a Geographical Indication (GI) status for their craft. With the GI, the artisans hope to get good prices for their products, and enhance the exports and development of the region in terms of trade and tourism. HUMPY KONERU PADMA SHRI, INDIAN CHESS GRANDMASTER PHOTO CREDIT VIJAYAWADA TOURISM SPOTS TO GET A FACELIFT Gandhi Hill and Bhavani Island will have modern amenities to draw more visitors The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) will develop the historical Gandhi Hill and Bhavani Island to boost tourism in Vijayawada. The agency has allocated Rs. 5 crore for the renovation of Gandhi Hill. At Bhavani Island, the agency plans to introduce a glow garden where various species of animals and birds would be displayed with 10 lakh LED lights. An important monument in India s freedom struggle, the 500-ft-high Gandhi Hill is located behind the Vijayawada Junction railway station in Tarapet. Named after the Father of the Nation, the destination got its name after Mahatma Gandhi s visit during India s freedom struggle. Formerly known as Orr Hill, the Gandhi memorial has a 52-feet-tall stupa, which was unveiled in 1968 by the then President Zakir Hussain. The memorial also has a museum and a planetarium. Under the Gandhi Hill project, to be accomplished with the support of Gandhi Hill Foundation, the APTA will revamp the planetarium, restore the children s train, build greenery and landscaping, and remodel the library, along with the other proposed modern amenities. Thanks to chess, I get to travel extensively. I have many favourite international destinations, but when I m in India, my first choice is always Andhra Pradesh. Go to any part of the state and you ll find fascinating landscapes, including ancient temples, scenic hill stations, and serene beaches. If you wish to experience a holiday that has everything culture, faith, and relaxation then head to Vijayawada. The city is known for its ornate Kanaka Durga Temple, Akkanna and Madanna Caves, Bhavani Island, and Gandhi Hill.
