Warm ups *What is one of the major influences of the Spanish in the Philippines? *What actions is the current president taking to reduce crime?

Lesson Objective: *describe impacts of geographical isolation of Australia *explain what coral bleaching is and what causes it

European Contact *When do you think Australia was first discovered by Europeans? *European records discuss Terra Australis Incognita from 1606 *it is estimated that 54 European ships made contact from between 1606 and 1770

Aboriginal Culture *scientists estimate that the aboriginal culture is the oldest in the world, and that it goes back as far as 50,000 years

An Isolated People *Why do you think the coastline would have been different 50,000 years ago?

Disappearance of Aborigines *between , it is estimated that 90% of Aboriginal Australians died or were killed

Primary Sources The Government is fast disposing of the land occupied by the natives from time immemorial. In addition to which settlers under the sanction of government may establish themselves in any part of this extensive territory and since the introduction of the numerous flocks and herds... a serious loss has been sustained by the natives without an equivalent being rendered. Their territory is not only invaded, but their game is driven back, their marnong and other valuable roots are eaten by the white man's sheep and their deprivation, abuse and miseries are daily increasing. Francis Tuckfield, Wesleyan Missionary, Tuckfield Journal, Manuscript 655, pg , 152, State Library of Victoria

Primary Sources "In less than twenty years we have nearly swept them off the face of the earth. We have shot them down like dogs. In the guise of friendship we have issued corrosive sublimate in their damper and consigned whole tribes to the agonies of an excruciating death. We have made them drunkards, and infected them with diseases which have rotted the bones of their adults, and made such few children as are born amongst them a sorrow and a torture from the very instant of their birth. We have made them outcasts on their own land, and are rapidly consigning them to entire annihilation." ~Edward Wilson, Argus, 17th March 1856 (7)

Isolation Causes Uniqueness *Australia is known for its unique plants and animals (as well as aboriginal culture), in large part due to its isolation from the rest of the world

Isolation Causes Uniqueness *84% of vegetation in New Zealand grows nowhere else on Earth *Australia has 386 mammals that are found nowhere else on Earth, 18,000 types of plants, and 7,300 vertebrates (animals with backbones)

Environmental Problems *the British introduced 24 rabbits for hunting and to make the settlers feel more at home *within 60 years, they had occupied 4 million square kilometers, making it the fastest colonizing animal known

Rabbit Problems *rabbits eat native vegetation, leaving less food for the native animals *foxes (also introduced) also increased because of the high numbers of rabbits, and they also take their toll on native animals

Rabbit Problems *it s estimated that rabbits cause around $115 million dollars in agricultural damage a year *they ve also contributed to erosion, which has led to ancient burial sites being exposed

Great Barrier Reef *the Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world, and it can even be seen from space!

Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef Facts *it brings about $4 billion in from tourism each year *Thirty species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef. *Six species of sea turtles come to the reef to breed. *215 species of birds (including 22 species of seabirds and 32 species of shorebirds) visit the reef or nest or roost on the islands. *Seventeen species of sea snake live on the Great Barrier Reef. *More than 1,500 fish species live on the reef. *Around 10 percent of the world s total fish species can be found just within the Great Barrier Reef. *There are at least 330 species of ascidians on the reef system.
