Explore one of fascinating caves in Sabah which is home to millions of bats and swiftlets. The swiftlets make famous Chinese edible bird s nest soup. Continue your journey overland for anor half an hour to Sukau. Have lunch and check-in to Discovery River Lodge (formerly known as Sri Menanggol Cabins). Take for an evening boat cruise to Menanggol river, a tributary of Kinabatangan river, is longest and biggest river in Sabah to search for wildlife like elusive Proboscis Monkey, and pygmy elephants, which is endemic to Borneo. Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary is one of best places in Souast Asia to observe wildlife. After dinner, you can watch a video documentary about Proboscis Monkeys or take an optional Night Cruise/Night Safari at a minimal price which can be arranged through lodge. Overnight at eco friendly accommodation- Discovery River Lodge, Sukau Day 2 Sukau -Ox-Bow Lake / Resang River (B/L/D) Take an early morning cruise to one of Ox-Bow Lakes which was formed by large meanders of Kinabatangan river that had been cut off from main channel. The trip takes you to see riverine forest and wildlife in area. The Oriental Darter, Storm s Stork, various species of Hornbills and Kingfishers are commonly seen. If wear permits, you could also do jungle trekking. Return to lodge for breakfast, and you are at leisure to take a short walk or hire our mountain bike to explore village of Sukau nearby. In evening, embark for anor evening cruise in search of more wildlife. After dinner, you may take an optional Night Cruise tour in search for nocturnal animals. 2 DISCOVERY RIVER LODGE ITINERARY Day 3-Sepilok Orang Utan / (B/L) After breakfast, depart from Sukau to mainland of. Upon arrival, drive for about half an hour to Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre, where orphaned and injured Orang-Utans are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated and nursed to return and fend for mselves back in wild. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest, a fine showcase of Borneo s remaining rainforest. Witness feeding of Orang-Utans from a platform in forest. Stop for lunch at a beautiful colonial English Tea House and Restaurant. Later, do a city tour and visit various landmarks and historical points in like Water Village, Central Market and Puu Jih Shih Buddhist Temple before your transfer back to airport/hotel. 3 Kinabatangan River Stretching 560km from Crocker Range in southwest of Sabah to Sulu Sea in east, Kinabatangan River sustains one of world's richest ecosystems. The surrounding areas along river consist of five distinct habitats - dipterocarp or dry, waterlogged and limestone forests, and freshwater and saline swamps. The lower basin of river itself is largest forest covered floodplain in Malaysia and has largest concentration of wildlife in South East Asian region. Or than being home to Borneo's indigenous orang utan and proboscis monkey, surrounding forest is also one of only two known places in world where 10 species of primates are found. All eight species of hornbill found in Borneo make area ir home. A trip up river at dawn or dusk is best opportunity to see wildlife. You might even sight an Asian elephant or a Sumatran rhinoceros wandering through trees. Optional tours can be arranged for night safaris as well to spot crocodiles, birds and nocturnal animals. Since 13th century, Chinese traders have come to in search of birds' nests, a prized delicacy among Chinese and found nearly 100 metres up on ceilings of Gomantong Caves. Harvesters put ir lives on line literally, climbing networks of rattan ladders and ropes to get to nests. The risky nature of nest collecting has only helped made commodity a pricey one. There are two cave complexes - Simud Hitam (Black Cave) soaring up to 90 metres high and more accessible of two, and Simud Putih (White Cave), where more valuable nests are found. Simud Hitam is a five- minute walk from registration centre. A well-maintained boardwalk gives you easy access to do some exploring or watch skilled harvesters at work. The resident creatures of caves include swiftlets (from which nests are collected) and bats among ors. Outside, or birds such as serpent eagles, bat hawks and kingfishers can be seen.
