MAYAN CIVALIZATION

Who are the Maya? The Maya were native people of Mexico and Central America who have continuously settled in the lands consist of modern-day Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas in Mexico.

Where did the Maya people live? The ancient Mayans lived in what is now known as southern Mexico and northern Central America including Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Yucatán Peninsula and El Salvador. Their descendants still live there today, and many of them speak the Mayan languages.

When were the Mayans around? 2600 B.C. The Mayans are probably the best-known for their classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatan around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, El Salvador, and northern Belize.

MAYAN GOD Mayan s Gods where heavily influenced by visiting peoples such as Egyptians, Phoenicians and West Africans. There were quite a few and many changed over time. Mayan Gods could change into animal or human shapes (Very much like West African Gods). Ceremonies was placed to keep the Gods happy, they are usually preformed by the priest. The Maya thought that the world is parted into three groups the Heaven, the earth and the under world. Which was thought to be linked by a gigantic world tree. Mayan kings were also thought to become Gods after their death.

When did the Mayan civilization disappear? The Fall of the Maya: When European conquistadores sailed for Central America in the early 1500s, they were looking for untold wealth - and woe betide any native people who stood in their way. But in some places, the colonists found that there was hardly anyone to resist them. The once-thriving Maya civilisation had long since collapsed.

Who came before and after the Mayans? The Maya, Inca, and Aztecs built great civilisations in Mexico and in Central and South America between 1,800 and 500 years ago. The first of these was the Maya civilisation. About 2,800 years ago, people known as the Maya lived in farming villages on the Yucatan Peninsula and the highlands to the south.

The Chichen Itza

The Chichen Itza The Chichen Itza is the second popular place to visit in Mexico. It is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the New World. Located on the Yucatan Peninsula, Chichen Itza was a large city built by the Maya people. It thrived from about 600 AD., until 1221, when the power in the region shifted to Mayapan. Today it can be visited by tourists and religious pilgrims alike. Chichen Itza is the second most popular site for visitors to Mexico. It thrived from about 600 AD., until 1221, when the power in the region shifted to Mayapan. Today it can be visited by tourists and religious pilgrims alike. The Castillo is probably the most famous image of Chichen Itza. 11

Mayans influenced by Africans Now in the modern era it has become common knowledge amongst academics of history that Christopher Columbus never discovered the Americas. How can you discover a people, continent that were already there and had a thriving prosperous culture. Overwhelming evidence has been constantly emerging since the start of the 19th cen which proves that Africans had frequently sailed across the Atlantic to the Americas, a thousand plus yeas before Jesus Christ. Ancient civilisations of Egypt, Phoenicia and West Africa traveled to the Americas. They contributed immensely to early American civilisations such as the Olmecs, Incas and Mayans by importing the art of pyramid building, political systems and religious practices as well as mathematics, writing and a sophisticated calendar. 14
