On your first day you can arrive at any time, and then why not check out what has to offer? La Fortuna / Arenal With a spectacular volcano offering a dramatic backdrop to La Fortuna, it feels like a perfect setting for the abundance of adrenalin sports and exciting activities on offer. You can try some windsurfing on Lake Arenal, take a night hike around the base of the volcano to see the top glowing an eerie red, explore some nature trails or soak in the hot springs. You can also catch your breath with a bracing swim in La Fortuna waterfall or try whitewater rafting or mountain biking - the choice is endless. Ometepe From the town of San Jorge, you ll cross Lake Nicaragua by ferry to arrive at Ometepe Island. Your group will be split up amongst different families who will host you in their homes in a small community during your stay on the island. Breakfast and dinner will be provided in the home so brush up on your language skills and get acquainted with true Nicaraguan hospitality. (B, 2D) Granada Get to grips with colonial Granada with an orientation walk and spend some time exploring its many markets and museums. With its gorgeous setting, surrounded by volcanoes and lakes, Granada is a great base to venture out on day trips. You can visit the active Masaya Volcano or kayak the isletas in Lake Nicaragua. (B) Poneloya Enjoy a couple of days of complete relaxation on a remote beach, where surfing, swimming and relaxing on the sand awaits. Your accommodation is right on the beach and has an attached bar and restaurant. There s not much on the stretch of beach, but that s part of the beauty of Nicaragua s northern Pacific coast so simply sit back and enjoy! If you re feeling more active however, you can opt to hike Cerro Negro or check out the city of León. Suchitoto Nestled in the mountains of the north of El Salvador, Suchitoto is a charming laid-back town perched on the edge of an impressive artificial lake called Suchitlan Lake, also known as Embalse Cerron Grande. Here is the place to tantalise your tastebuds and dine on delicious pupusas, a local Salvadorian speciality. Should you fancy a bit of exploration, a short hike will take you to the Los Tercios waterfall, famed for its unique composition of hexagonal blocks of stone along a vertical wall. Concepción de Ataco Explore the Ruta de las Flores area with its quaint Salvadorian towns and many artisans. Concepción de Ataco is a small town which is home to some talented artisans who have painted bright murals throughout the town. Day hikes, a coffee tour and shopping are some of many options for your time here. Hike El Impossible National Park, swim in the pools of Atzumpa, check out some of the other nearby quaint towns or just explore tiny Ataco. This is a coffee-producing region of El Salvador, so be sure to get your caffeine hit by sampling some delicious coffee in a local café. 120 VISIT

After Copán, it s off to Antigua on Day 17 where you ll enjoy an orientation walk of this colonial town which, despite its size, still manages to maintain a peaceful feel. Take a mountain bike ride out into the countryside or explore the fascinating markets, shops and museums within the city. Panajachel / Lake Atitlán Travel to Lake Atitlán, which is one of the most beautiful spots in Guatemala. Twelve native villages, blue-grey mountains and three volcanoes line the shores of this lake resulting in a wonderful combination of unusual natural beauty and traditional culture. You ll also get a chance to explore Panajachel and tackling it by foot is the best way to see its old churches and backstreets - pay attention to where you re going though as there aren t any street signs! Next, you ll overnight to the small town of San Juan la Laguna, home to 3,000 inhabitants, mostly Mayas. Tonight, the group will be spread out among a number of homes, and you will sleep in a local family s home, where dinner will also be provided. (D) Antigua Return to Antigua to spend more time exploring the city or shop for souvenirs. Antigua offers three specialities that make shopping here very worthwhile - textiles, jade and silver. It s time to give that credit card a workout and stock up! You ll also get a chance to practice some salsa moves on an included group dancing lesson. Río Dulce / Flores Find yourself relaxing in Río Dulce, a small town on Lake Izabal and a port stop for boaters around the globe, on their way to/from Livingston and the Caribbean coast. You can take a morning monkey kayak tour, relax in the thermal springs or hike through the jungle-strewn trails in the Chocón-Machacas Natural Reserve area. Your final stop in Guatemala is Flores, a picturesque town surrounded by Lake Petén Itzá where many of the local inhabitants still get around by cayuco, or dugout canoe. Flores remains one of the most scenic and charming towns in the Petén. Tikal / San Ignacio Heading north, it s your chance to see the spectaular and impressive scale of the ruins at Tikal which also boasts the Mayans highest pyramids. If you give yourself enough time, make sure you venture into the surrounding jungle where you ll discover a whole variety of flora and fauna. After Tikal, it s across the border and into Belize. Being based in San Ignacio, you ll find plenty to do whether you decide to explore by foot, canoe or horse. There s also a chance to try some caving or take a swim in the inviting pools and rivers of the Mountain Pine Ridge area. Caye Caulker The island of Caye Caulker is as relaxed and easy-going as it comes. With friendly and welcoming locals, a main street which is literally a sandy path through the centre of town and a choice of restaurants, seafood stands and bars, it s the ideal place to relax. Snorkel and dive the reef which is the world s second-longest (after Australia s Great Barrier Reef) and offers some truly amazing sights including coral canyons, an astonishing range of tropical fish, manta rays, sharks and barracudas. Playa del Carmen Leaving Belize and its Caribbean, reggae-tinged vibe, you ll head north for your final night of the trip in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the de facto centre of the Mayan Riviera. This once-sleepy village is quickly becoming a destination among sun worshippers worldwide. Spend your time here snorkelling or diving in underground caverns, or simply sipping on cool margaritas and catching some rays on the beautiful white sand beach. Rio Dulce Your next stop is Río Dulce, a small town on Lake Izabal, perfect for a bit of R & R. Opt to visit the coastal town of Livingston by boat, view protected manatees or relax in thermal springs. Panajachel / Lake Atitlán It s off to Panajachel, a relatively modern town with great deal of old world flavour and charm. Soak up the town s traditional side and navigate your way around the back streets visiting the many old churches along the way. Make sure you keep track of where you re going as there aren t any street signs! If you fancy, take a boat ride on the lake to see the other villages keeping your camera handy for spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes, and everyday life in a highland village. On Day 14, you ll stay the night with a local family in the village of San Juan, an eye-opening experience where you ll gain a better understanding of the day-to-day life of the locals in this region. Explore the museums, colonial buildings and browse the many shops for Antigua s three specialities; textiles, jade or ceramics; perhaps pick up a souvenir or two! Enjoy an included group salsa lesson, then try out your new moves during a final night out in Guatemala. Copán Today you ll head to the World Heritage Site of the Mayan ruins of Copán, some of the most important Mayan ruins with many unusual artistic features. Stroll through grassy plazas and marvel at the carved and decorated monuments, statues and staircases. Perhaps head to the charming colonial highland town of Copán Ruinas or check out the private macaw reserve. If you re feeling like you need a bit of me time, journey to some local hot springs for a relaxing soak. Roatan Island Travel through the hills of Honduras, before arriving at the coast for your ferry across to paradise. Take a dip in its crystal-clear turquoise waters and chill out on the white, sandy beaches fringed by coconut palms. Head out snorkelling into the protected reef, home to thousands of vibrantlycoloured fish and marine life and spend your evenings trying freshly-caught seafood. Bliss! León You ll skip a long bus ride today as you ll have the chance to fly to Tegucigalpa, before continuing overland to politically progressive León in Nicaragua. While you re here, make sure you step back in time and discover its turbulent history by visiting one of the many museums in the area. Granada Next stop is the third-largest and oldest city of Nicaragua, Granada. Take in its Spanish colonial charm and surrounding active volcanoes and lakes. Take a day trip and hike, cruise, or wander around the city s markets and museums. If you fancy seeing more of the nearby areas, enjoy an optional visit to the still-active Masaya Volcano or kayak around the isletas in Lake Nicaragua. (B) La Fortuna / Arenal Jump on board a boat and enjoy the beautiful scenery on a relaxing boat ride across Lake Arenal. You ll spend the next couple of days in La Fortuna, a town near the foot of the volcano. A perfect base for adventure, try one of the many activities on offer. Hike the area s nature trails looking out for the many species of birds that Costa Rica is famous for. With over 600 species as permanent residents, you re bound to spot a few! If you re up for getting stuck in, take to the raging rapids on a whitewater rafting trip on the Toro or Arenal Rivers, head out mountain biking, caving, or tour the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge to glimpse a few of its inhabitants. After a long day exploring this beautiful area, plunge into the Baldi Hot Springs to soak any tired muscles. Travel to the hustle and bustle of the city to finish this ultimate tour in style, with its busy downtown streets, beautiful parks and museums and surrounding views of lush, verdant mountains. Stroll through the main plaza, a great place to people-watch and amuse yourself with the many mime artists, jugglers, marimba bands or magicians that regularly perform here. Head to the markets to scour for any last-minute souvenirs and treat yourself to some of the handicrafts. Río Dulce Río Dulce means sweet river in Spanish. This small town, surrounded by dense jungle is nestled on the shore of Lake Izabal. There are optional tours in the area to view protected manatees, or you may opt to horseback ride through a rubber plantation, explore San Felipe fort, take a morning monkey kayak tour, relax in the thermal springs or hike through the jungle-strewn trails in the Chocón- Machacas Natural Reserve area.
