1 PRO PILOT COMPENSATION Salary Study 2017: airlines target corporates With little growth during 2017, the increase in bizav pilot salaries grew by only 2%. But with airline acquisitions of new aircraft plus older pilots retiring, they have been targeting young corporate pilots to fill their cockpits. In response some top executive flight departments have raised their salary and benefit packages. Gulfstream G650ER Dassault Falcon 7X Global Express 6000 Leonardo AW139 Bell 429 Airbus Helicopters EC145 Pro Pilot Staff Report O verall salary increases for business aviation pilots grew on average 2% during this year. In general, bizav has shown little expansion. But the airlines aggressively have been growing rapidly. The airlines are pushing hard to ind pilots to replace a large block of retirees and also to ill the cockpits of recently added airliners. A growing number of corporate aviation activities are now faced with airline recruitments and so the corporate light depts are offering better compensation packages especially to prevent their younger lightcrew members from leaving. This means that some corporate departments are raising salaries well above the industry 2% average to blunt airline recruiting. As the population increases worldwide the number of airline pasengers grows larger. So the airlines are expanding their leets and are desperate to ind more pilots. Retired military pilots are not a viable option so the airlines are targeting corporate light depts and other executive jets activities with strong recruiting efforts and attractive beneit packages. Further, the better salary increases are at corporate light depts with large aircraft Gulfstreams, Falcons, Challengers, Globals, Legacies, and Citations. Airlines are particularly eager to attract young pilots with multiengine turbine time in their log books. Where Pro Pilot gets salary numbers As usual we worked hard to get really good salary information this year. Our primary data source is our own survey effort, which netted 1370 responses. This is a study rather than a survey because we also networked with a group of key bizav activities. They cooperated by furnishing clearcut information based on what was happening in their own light departments. To keep it as readable as possible, we igure salaries in US dollars by aircraft type without adding bonuses, proits, overtime, seniority years gains, or other beneits. Also these are salaries before taxes. And we don t separate salaries by regional differences. Instead, we average out a group of pilots who are within our measured standards from data received. In addition, the low, median and high salaries that we show, we don t include inlated salaries paid by celebrities. Bizjets and TPs are selling While corporate aviation is continuing to grow, the airlines are booming more. But notice that the major airframe OEMs are bringing out new innovative models and purchases are being made. Gulfstream, Dassault, Bombardier, Embraer, and Textron s Cessna Citation are all penning in orders for their new bizjets. Clearly the world s industry leaders prefer lying their own business aircraft as compared to riding the airlines. Early arrival schedules, time wasting check-in times and increased security delays don t suit busy business executives. And airline emanation and landing sites often are not where these executives really want to go. There s also growth in inventive aviation share clubs and other charter activities such as PlaneSense, Wheels Up, MySky, and 91K activities like NetJets. Range and cabin comfort are key selling points The big boys will tell you range and cabin size are what sells in business aircraft. And while Gulfstream, Bombardier and Dassault have led the way with the ultra long-range jets, Embraer and 78 PROFESSIONAL PILOT / June 2017

So we do see opportunities for more corporate pilot positions with the new Gulfstream G500 and G600, the Citation Latitude and Longitude, the Embraer Legacy 450 and 500, the Dassault 5X, and the Pilatus PC24. Turboprops having a rebirth with usefulness the key to their growth The ubiquitous Beech King Air, now under the Textron banner, is still selling well after 50 years of production. Piaggio has come back with a strong market push for its P180 Avanti II EVO turboprop. And the Pilatus PC12 continues to sell well as does the Daher TBM. Helicopters ill the needs for security, EMS, SAR and energy exploration There certainly are jobs that only a helicopter can do which include airborne law enforcement as well as emergency medical service, search and rescue and energy exploration. The answer to dispelling terrorism is to have the intelligence to know where and when bad guys will strike. Helicopters and even UAVs offer these This is the 45th year Pro Pilot has conducted a salary study by aircraft type, matching compensation to speciic ixed and rotary-wing aircraft models. During Apr 2017 a total of 8878 survey forms were sent out to a random selection of qualiied Pro Pilot readers in the US and worldwide. A total of 1370 forms, representing a 15.4% return, came back to the Pro Pilot ofice in Alexandria VA by the cutoff date of May 31, After review a total of 1175 survey forms were found qualiied as being Methodology intelligence gathering capabilities. And rescues with EMS and SAR continue to be key needs that are solved with helicopter operations. Energy is our big need on this planet. And although offshore ops are down due to low prices for oil, the need for helicopters in energy exploration continues to growth. Good jobs in bizav and specialized activities continue to expand as diversity brings new opportunites Corporate, charter, airborne law enforcement, offshore, EMS, SAR and energy exploration light ops offer much more diversity than the airlines. Overall pilots in these ields are happier with more satisfying careers and better family lives. Major manufacturers like Gulfstream, Dassault, Bombardier, Daher, Embraer, Pilatus and Textron are here to stay in the bizjet and TP ields. And Airbus Helicopters, Bell, Leonardo, MD, Robinson, Sikorsky are also very dedicated to their customers. We see jobs for pilots lying these aircraft as more satisfying than those lying for the airlines and we expect that to stay true with continuing bizav growth in the future. properly illed out by eligible respondents. There were 195 forms disqualiied due to lack of information, inconsistencies, errors, part time or contract pilot positions or lateness. Each form was carefully reviewed to ensure reliability of data. In addition to survey averages, Pro Pilot also compared salaries provided by various corporate light departments, pilot placement agencies and such activities as FAPA Financial Services, scheduled airlines and US government pilot services.
