2 THE ITINERARY Day 1 Australia - Cancun, Mexico Today depart from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, *Adelaide or *Perth for your flight to Cancun, Mexico. Fly with either American Airlines, Delta Airways, United Airlines, Virgin Australia or Air Canada to name a few (subject to availability). Upon arrival into Cancun a transfer will be arranged to the hotel to relax for the remainder of the evening at leisure. Explore the magnificent ruins set in a dense jungle, including the Pyramid of Kukulcan its height and striking geometric design dominating the whole site, the Great Ball Court the largest and most impressive in Mesoamerica, the Sacred Cenote a natural well used for human sacrifice, and many other beautiful temples. In the afternoon, drive to Merida the ancient Mayan city, via Izamal. In ancient times, Izamal was a centre for the worship of the supreme Mayan god, Itzamna, and the sun god, Kinich-Kakmo. A dozen temple pyramids were devoted to these gods. Perhaps these bold expressions of religion are why the Spanish colonists chose Izamal as the site for an enormous Franciscan monastery the Convento de San Antonio de Padua - which today stands at the heart of the town. See the impressive monastery, the Mayan ruins, and the streets of this quiet, colonial gem, nicknamed La Ciudad Amarilla (the yellow city) for the traditional yellow that most buildings are painted in. Arrive in Merida, the social and economic centre, as well as the capital, of the state of Yucatan. The city s main boulevard, Paseo Montejo, is home to impressive European-style mansions with pastel shades and elaborate trim, and are reminiscent of lavishly iced wedding cakes. Hotel Del Gobernador, Merida Meals included: Breakfast Day 4 Merida Uxmal Archeological Site - Hacienda Sotuta de Peon Visit (Approx. 170km Day) Today visit the archaeological site of Uxmal, a World Heritage Site. Its architecture is characterised by low horizontal palaces set around courtyards, decorated with a profusion of symbolic motifs and sculptures depicting the long-nosed rain god Chaac. Explore the magnificent buildings, including the House of the Magician which dominates the site, the Nunnery, and the House of Turtles. In the afternoon, take in a a bit of 1800s history with a drive to Yucatan s only working henequen (sisal) hacienda (farm) Sotuta de Peon. During the tour of the hacienda, we will learn about the origins of henequen and details of Yucatan s enormous henequen boom. We will see the whole transformation process of the henequen (sisal rope), from plant to fibre and from fibre to finished product, all done on centuries old machinery. We then get onto wooden carts pulled by mules, originally used by henequen workers, and take a ride into the henequen fields. 3 THE ITINERARY Day 5 Merida - Valladolid Coba Archeological Site - Riviera Maya (Approx. 285km Day) After breakfast continue your journey to Riviera Maya via the magic town of Valladolid. Valladolid is the third largest city in Yucatan. Valladolid was built over the ancient Maya ceremonial centre or Zaci. The city centre on the Park Francisco Canton Rosad, where you will find the Church of San Gervasio. There are seven colonial churches and the city is nicknamed the Sultan of the East because of its colonial splendour. We keep driving to the archaeological site of Coba, built around a group of lakes, Coba is one of the largest Mayan cities, believed to have been inhabited by up to 40 thousand people. Explore the mostly unrestored temples set deep in tropical jungle, and climb the Great Pyramid of Nohoch Mul, the tallest Mayan structure on the Yucatan Peninsula. Afterwards arrive at your all-inclusive resort for the next three nights! 4 THE ITINERARY Day 11 Isla de Rotan, Honduras - 8:00am to 5:00pm With a low mountain chain crossing it from end to end, Roatán, like the other islands in the bay, has deep coves protected by coral reefs along the coast facing Honduras, which have proved a safe landing place for ships through the centuries. Day 12 Belize City, Belize - 9:00am to 5:00pm This town will reveal a distinguished history, several superb sights and fascinating cultural spectacles. The city s astonishing energy comes from its 76,000-plus inhabitants, who represent every ethnic group in the country, with the Creole descendants of former slaves and British Baymen forming the dominant element and generating an easy-going Caribbean atmosphere.
