1 MEMO TO STATE PUBLICATION PROGRAM LIBRARIES January 31, 2005 Memo from Marci: Happy New Year to you all! There are more than a few items of note in this shipment: On Fertile Ground: New Mexico Counts on Culture is the recent publication by the Department of Cultural Affairs showing the economic impact of the arts on New Mexico. The impact is considerable with cultural activities generating more that $2.5 billion in direct economic impact in In addition to figures relating the arts and the New Mexico economy there are case studies of how the arts have had a positive economic impact on small communities in New Mexico. A good companion to On Fertile Ground, but not a depository item, is a publication from the University of New Mexico s Bureau of Business and Economic Research entitled The Economic Importance of the Arts and Cultural Industries in Santa Fe County It is online at and can be read or downloaded if you would like to add it to your collection and/or are looking at ideas for determining the economic impact of the arts on your community. Statistics from both these publications can be used to bolster support for culturally related (read libraries here as well as the arts ) projects and grants. Look at the 2003 New Mexico Social Indicator Report by the Department of Health. In the DOH s words, Substance abuse exacts a heavy toll on the citizens of New Mexico and their families. The 2003 New Mexico Social Indicator Report responds to the burden imposed by alcohol and drugs on our state by providing information that can be used by policy makers and program planners in designing and targeting prevention, intervention, and treatment programs. The report quantifies 22 different indicators of substance abuse. Comparisons are made between counties within New Mexico, the state as a whole, and where appropriate, the entire nation. This attention to local level data makes this report equally useful to those working in their communities and to those working at the statewide level. Four titles dealing with Teen Pregnancy can be used by students doing reports on teen pregnancy and sex education- or by health entities needing supporting statistics for grant applications: Challenge 2005: Reducing Teen Pregnancy in New Mexico Tune In: New Mexico Attitudes on Sex Education Hispanic Teen Pregnancy Prevention Resource Directory and Ten Lessons Learned: About New Mexico s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Projects Other related information can be found at the Teen Pregnancy Coalition s website at - New Mexico Organic Producer Marketing Guide, Directory of Markets for New Mexico Organic Producers and Certified Organic New Mexico Producers, Processors, Handlers and Retailers are the three publications that from the Organic
2 Letter for shiplist cont d. January 31, 2005 Page 2 Commodities Commission spoke about at the annual meeting in late October. The marketing guide is a great introduction to organic farming and marketing in New Mexico. We here at the State Library have a small collection on organic farming and marketing that your patrons can ILL if they would like further information on small-scale, organic farming. Small Wind Electric Systems is a great guide for creating wind powered electricity both for residential and commercial use. It is a Federal publication distributed by the Energy, Mineral and Natural Resources Department that we felt important enough to become a depository item.
