Piracy on the world s seas has reached a fiveyear low, with 297 ships attacked in 2012, compared with 439 in 2011, the latest International Maritime Bureau s (IMB) report revealed on January 16 Maritime Labor Convention Will Offer Protections to Maritime Workers In 2012, the International Labor Organization, the United Nations group dedicated to advocating for laborers around the world, announced that the Maritime Labor Convention will go into effect in August 2013 after Russia and the Philippines ratified it. Ratification of the convention required signing by at least 30 countries representing 33 percent of world shipping. The United States has not signed the convention. Shipping Industry Bodies Urge Continued Application of Anti-Piracy Measures The International Maritime Organization, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), BIMCO, the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO), the International Association of Dry Cargo Ship owners (INTERCARGO), the International Parcel Tankers Association (IPTA), and the International Shipping Federation (ISF), welcome the recent decrease in the number of attempted and successful attacks against ships by Somalia-based pirates operating in the Gulf of Aden and the western Indian Ocean.
2 Zircon Marine Weekly Newsletter Page 2 FG moves to improve maritime security Nigeria has commenced the process towards domesticating the Maritime International Law in order to ensure maximum security for her vessels on the high seas. The Minister of State for Defence, Olusola Obada, stated this in Abuja while holding a meeting with the committee set up by the government on the issue which involves all maritime stakeholders. Mrs. Olusola Obada Minister of State for Defence government must put a stop to corruption, to make the system work US moves to expand Nigeria s maritime The United States of America (USA), has commenced moves to partner with Nigerian government in expanding the nation s maritime sector through jobs creation. US Ambassador to Nigeria, Terrence P. McCulley, who disclosed this at the weekend, while addressing the Nigerian contingent to the International Workboat Show which held in New Orleans, USA, however warned that government must put a stop to corruption, to make the system work.
