2 Aloha, Just returned from a fun-filled and memorable group tour to Japan. Tour members ranged in age from 8 to 89 years old. Very heart-warming to see everyone bond with each other from the moment we boarded our Hawaiian Airlines flight. Experienced the natural beauty of Miyajima Island where we overnighted at the incomparable Iwaso Inn. Enjoyed the thrilling rapids of the downstream Hozu river boat ride. And in spite of the rain, we witnessed the glorious Gion Festival yamaboko floats. Eating matsuri (festival) food was my favorite! Grilled giant squid, Hokkaido sweet corn-on-the-cob, and Yakitori (grilled chicken) just for starters! Our team has created many new tours for you to enjoy! Look forward to discovering the world with you. Mahalo for your continued support! Depart Honolulu via JAPAN AIRLINES. Hiroshima Miyajima HONSHU SHIKOKU JAPAN Day 2: FUKUOKA. After entry formalities transfer by coach to your hotel. HOTEL NEW OTANI HAKATA. Day 3: FUKUOKA SHIMONOSEKI. After a sumptuous buff et breakfast make way to Shimonoseki on Honshu Island. First visit Akama Shrine. It is sacred to the spirit of Emperor Antoku, who died at only three years of age. Later it became the Kiheitai headquarters. Next we visit the Karato Market famous for Fugu puffer fish. During the early hours, Karato is a busy wholesale market which is transformed as the day progresses into a crowded retail market known for all kinds of seafood delicacies. After lunch visit Kosanji Temple. Within the temple grounds stands a statue of Takasugi Shinsaku raising an army for the coup d etat. Mounted on a stallion, there is no trace of hesitation on his face. As the leader of Kiheitai, from this point onwards he would run non-stop through the upheaval of the Meiji Restoration. Next enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms at Tokiwa Park. ANA CROWN PLAZA HOTEL UBE. (B, L) Day 4: UBE HOFU. Sugi Fumi (later to become Miwako) is the heroine, and Odamura Inosuke (later to become Katori Motohiko) who would in the future be wed, spent their final years here in Hofu, Yamaguchi prefecture. Visit Hofu Tenmangu Shrine and its Sacred 800 year old tree. Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is known as Japan s first Tenmangu shrine, it is sacred to the god of knowledge Sugawarano Michizane. Along with Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka, as the three gods of Japan. Hoshuan is a historic site where it is said that the leading spirits of the Meiji Restoration often stayed and held secret conferences during the tumultuous times at the end of the Edo period. Enjoy a Tea Ceremony followed by lunch. Enjoy a visit to Mouri Museum and Garden. Dinner at hotel. Tour #1: HOTEL KAMEFUKU Tour #2: UMENOYA (B, L, D) Day 5: HOFU KOZAN - HAGI. Most people come to visit the Rurikoji Temple the national treasure fivestory pagoda and leave. It s such a pity, as right behind them there is a building valuable enough to claim that without it, there would have been no Meiji Reformation! It is this building! Chinryutei. Built at the end of the Edo period, it s an invaluable structure that remains in its original form. What kind of historical events has the building witnessed? Well, it was the place where secret meetings were held between the Satsuma and Choshu alliance intermediated by Sakamoto Ryoma! It s a spot so important for the end of the Edo period and the start of the Meiji Restoration that it would be no exaggeration to say that the signal smoke for the attack to overthrow the shogunate rose from this spot! Finally we visit Joeiji Temple and the beautiful Sesshutei Garden. Dinner at hotel. HAGI GRAND HOTEL TENKUU (2 nights) (B, L, D) Day 6: HAGI. Enjoy the gorgeous cherry blossoms at the Hagi Castle Ruins. After lunch visit Shoin Shrine, Yoshida Shoin History Museum, Shiseikan & Shokason Juku. Shokason Juku is the place where Yoshida Shoin taught. The leading spirits of the Meiji Restoration such as Kusaka Genzui, Takasugi Shinsaku and Ito Hirobumi all studied here. Dinner at hotel. (B,D) Day 7: HAGI MIYAJIMA or MIYAJIMA-GUCHI. Hagi castle town has been designated as a national historical site. This is the birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku, a key figure among the reformists. The town is crammed with spots irresistible to fans of Hana Moyu and the Meiji Restoration era. Appearing in the first episode of NHK historical drama Hana Moyu, it s a curvy zigzag road called Kaimagari. The road runs between walls of earth and stone that were apparently designed to obstruct the view during battle and to defend against enemy invasions. It s filled with an air that seems as though Yoshida Shoin or Takasugi Shinsaku might appear at any moment. Enjoy cherry blossoms at Kikko Park next to Nishiki River and next to the famous Kintai Bridge. Kikko is famous for its cherry blossom and is considered one of Japan s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Kikko Park also houses the reconstruction of Iwakuni Castle and is famous for white snakes which live in the park. The white snakes are considered a sign of good luck. Dinner at hotel. (B,L,D) Tour #1: MIYAJIMA MAKOTO HOTEL (On Miyajima Island by ferry) Tour #2: AKI GRAND HOTEL (On Honshu Island adjacent to ferry terminal) Day 8: MIYAJIMA HIROSHIMA FUKUOKA. Tour Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island. Visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Atomic Bomb Museum. After lunch transfer to Hakata (Fukuoka) station by JR SUPER EXPRESS (Bullet Train) HOTEL NEW OTANI HAKATA. (B, L) Day 9: FUKUOKA HUIS TEN BOSCH SASEBO. Japan is a nation of many islands but most travelers never get beyond the main four. At Kujukushima National Park near Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture, however, you can up your island quotient by taking a scenic cruise of the region s waters. The word kujuku literally means 99 but has come to refer to a vast number or something uncountable. In truth, there are 208 islands off the coast of Sasebo, the largest concentration of islands anywhere in Japan. If these islands look familiar, chalk it up to the fact that they featured prominently in the opening scenes of the film The Last Samurai. Next stop is Huis Ten Bosch (Hausu Ten Bosu) is a theme park in Nagasaki Prefecture which recreates a Dutch town. It is named after one of the residences of the Dutch Royal Family. The spacious resort is suffused with a European atmosphere with its picturesque canals, iconic windmills, beautiful gardens and architecture. Enjoy the spring time flowers. HOTEL OKURA JR HUIS TEN BOSCH (B, L) Day 10: SASEBO FUKUOKA. Enjoy spectacular cherry blossoms at Maizuru Park. Dazaifu was established in the late 7th century and served as the administrative center of the entire island of Kyushu for over 500 years. Nowadays, Dazaifu is a small, quiet city on the outskirts of the large city of Fukuoka. There are a number of temples and shrines, the most famous of which is the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine & Komyozenji Temple. Next stop is Canal City Hakata. A large shopping and entertainment complex, calling itself a city within the city. Attractions include about 250 shops, cafes and restaurants, a theater, game center, cinemas, two hotels and a canal running through the complex. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Today s hands-on experience is Surikomi Yuzen (brush dyed Yuzen), which is one of Kyoto s traditional craft Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing techniques. Your very own original work will be a perfect memento for yourself of a gift for someone. Lunch will be served at Ganko Sanjo where you will enjoy a specially prepared teishoku set - Ganko Gozen. At the Nishijin Textile Center, you can view displays of kimonos and even watch a kimono fashion show. The Shiroyama Viewpoint is north of the village center and offers nice views of Ogimachi and its farmhouses. Myozenji Temple, which is unique for its thatched roof rather than the typical tiled roof seen on most temples, is connected to the Myozenji-ke farmhouse next door where the priest of the temple lives. Then, we continue on to Takayama, where a festival that dates to the 15th century will be heating up. Located amongst the Japan Alps it is known as Little Kyoto for its preserved historical structures. 19 2016 CHERRY BLOSSOMS GRAND KYUSHU PLUS SHOPPING DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY: Day 1: HONOLULU FUKUOKA. DEPART HONOLULU via JAPAN AIRLINES. Day 2: FUKUOKA. After entry formalities, transfer by coach to hotel in Fukuoka. ROYAL PARK HOTEL THE FUKUOKA (2 nights) Bus Bullet Train Ferry Fukuoka Day 3: FUKUOKA. After a sumptuous breakfast buffet at your hotel, depart for a full day of sightseeing. Next stop is Canal City Hakata, a large shopping and entertainment complex, calling itself a city within the city. Attractions include about 250 shops, cafes and restaurants, a theater, game center, cinemas, two hotels and a canal running through the complex. The fifth floor consists of the Ramen Stadium, which has eight ramen shops with noodle dishes from across Japan, including the local specialty Hakata Ramen. Next make a stop at Fukuoka Tower. Before returning to your hotel make a stop for strawberry picking. A mouth-watering treat! (B) Sasebo Unzen Nagasaki Kumamoto Beppu JAPAN Day 4: FUKUOKA HUIS TEN BOSCH SASEBO. CHISUN GRAND SASEBO HOTEL (B) Kagoshima Miyazaki PACIFIC OCEAN Day 5: SASEBO NAGASAKI. The Nagasaki Peace Park commemorates the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, which destroyed wide parts of the city and killed tens of thousands of inhabitants. In the park stand the massive Peace Statue as well as various other memorials. A monument around a black pillar marks the atomic explosion s epicenter in the nearby Hypocenter Park and stores the name list of bomb victims. Above the park stands the sobering Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. After lunch, visit Glover Garden. An open air museum, exhibiting mansions of former Western residents of Nagasaki. A nice panorama of the city can be enjoyed from the garden. HOTEL NEW NAGASAKI (B,L,D) Day 6: NAGASAKI UNZEN - SHIMABARA KUMAMOTO. First stop this morning is at Unzen Jigoku ( Unzen Hell ): Hot water and gases spout out of the earth. Unzen Ropeway leads part way up the mountain slope. The lower and upper ropeway stations have observation decks with views over the surrounding mountains and the Ariake Sea all the way to Kumamoto Prefecture on a clear day. After lunch visit Mizunashi Honjin. This small village was buried by ash during an eruption of Mt. Fugen in A few roofs remain visible above the ash and debris, and the area is now a memorial site where the volcano s devastation is preserved. Enjoy a short ferry ride from Shimabara Port to Kumamoto. TOUR #1: KUMAMOTO HOTEL CASTLE TOUR #2: ANA CROWN PLAZA HOTEL KUMAMOTO NEW SKY (B, L) Day 7: KUMAMOTO KAGOSHIMA. Kumamoto Castle is the premier landmark of Kumamoto City, as well as its main attraction. It is also regarded as one of the most impressive castles in Japan, together with the white-walled Himeji Castle and the black-walled Matsumoto Castle. In the Edo Period ( ), a bustling town sprawled at the foot of Kumamoto s formidable castle. Today, that town looks quite a bit different, but you can still find a taste of the old days at Sakura-no-baba Josaien, an Edo-themed complex just down the hill from Kumamoto Castle. Lunch on own. Suizenji Garden is a spacious, Japanese style landscape garden in Kumamoto, best enjoyed by scrolling along a circular path. It was built by the Hosokawa family in the 17th century. The garden reproduces the 53 post stations of the Tokaido, the important road, which connected Edo with Kyoto during the Edo Period, in miniature form, including a small Mt. Fuji. We now make way to Kagoshima by JR Shinkansen (Bullet Train). REMM KAGOSHIMA HOTEL (B) Day 8: KAGOSHIMA IBUSUKI. Senganen Garden, also known as Isoteien, is a Japanese style landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. One of the garden s most striking feature is its use of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as borrowed scenery. There are a number of cherry trees, especially of the early flowering kanhizakura variety, which open as early as late January. Other cherry tree varieties provide flowers through mid April. After lunch make way to The Chiran Peace Museum For Kamikaze Pilots. It is a thought-provoking, and to many, a controversial museum dedicated to the lives and deaths of 1,036 suicide pilots or kamikaze, who sacrificed themselves in the name of the Japanese emperor in the latter stages of World War II. Next we visit the Samurai Residences. Arrive at Ibusuki. Ibusuki is an onsen town that is famous for its sand baths, where bathers are buried in naturally heated sand. At sand baths, guests get provided with yukata robes and are then buried by staff members in hot sand that is heated by natural steam coming up from below. After staying buried for typically 10 to 20 minutes, guests wash off the sand and enter regular hot spring baths. Enjoy the natural onsen hot springs and a specially prepared dinner at your hotel this evening. IBUSUKI IWASAKI HOTEL (B, L, D) Day 9: IBUSUKI MIYAZAKI. After breakfast, make way to Kirishima Shrine. The mountains of Kirishima are an important site in the creation mythology of Japan. It was in this area that the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have descended from heaven to rule over the earth. After lunch enjoy a scenic drive through the Nichinan-kaigan Coast. MIYAZAKI KANKO HOTEL Day 10: MIYAZAKI BEPPU.
