3 D E S T I N A T I O N G U I D E Tokyo skyline TOkYO METROPOLITAN Tokyo offers possibilities that no other city can rival: karaoke in glass-walled rooms, more Michelin stars than Paris, and the world's busiest fish market and train station. Japan's capital is a truly mesmerizing place with giant TV screens, flashing neon, and cutting edge technology making Tokyo one of the most futuristic and thrilling places on earth. The old downtown still thrives alongside the modern city. Tiny station eateries, ancient temples, geisha districts, and traditional shopping streets rub shoulders with super-luxury hotels, sleek skyscrapers, and high-tech shops. OSAkA PREFECTURE, HIGASHIOSAkA CITY Osaka is famous for its towering castle, thriving music scene, delicious street food, and quirky residents. It has always been a vibrant centre of commerce, and therefore also entertainment, as the two often go hand-in-hand. The area around Dotonbori and Ebisu Bridge is a blaze of bright lights and nightlife. Delicious and simple local cuisine includes okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes) and takoyaki (octopus dumplings), which you can find in many of the local downtown restaurants and street stalls. Kobe Port kobe CITY Despite its merits as an attractive and culturally rich port city, Kobe s real claim to fame lies in its worldrenowned beef. As is often found in Japanese cuisine, this flavourful meat is as much of a delight to the eyes as it is to the mouth; one look at Kobe beef s distinctive marbling is enough to make your mouth water. Popular destinations in Kobe include the beautiful Sorakuen Garden, vibrant Kobe Chinatown, and a host of attractions on the waterfront. Takayma Shirakawago Lake Ashi, Hakone HAkONE The Hakone area is known for its peaceful lake, steaming hot springs, and above all, its views of Mount Fuji. Lake Ashi marks the centre of a large national park. The surrounding mountains and old sections of the cobbled Tokaido Road provide excellent walking trails. The area is still volcanically active and the Great Boiling Valley is full of strange, sulphurous springs. Osaka Dotonbori Kyoto Fushimi Inari shrine kyoto Kyoto has a phenomenal collection of temples and shrines, dating back to its days as the capital city and before. There are about 2,000 temples in total, many designated as national treasures, which give the city a relaxed and traditional atmosphere. Kyoto is well known for its many peaceful Zen gardens, the most famous of which is the mysterious gravel garden at Ryoan-ji. Wandering the streets of Gion, you may be lucky enough to glimpse an elusive Geisha on her way to an appointment. TAkAYAMA Tucked into the forested foothills of Japan s Central Alps, has an enduring legacy of woodworking. Many of its skilled carpenters were once employed by emperors to build Kyoto and Nara s architectural gems. Now a smart modern town, it maintains its traditional heart of old merchant houses and peaceful temples and remains famous for its old inns and sake breweries. A visit to the nearby area of Shirakawa-go allows you to step back in time and experience life as it has been for hundreds of years in the traditionally steeply thatched roofs of the gassho-zukuri houses. 3

4 ASO Mount Aso, towering above the surrounding villages and paddy fields, is a closely monitored active volcano. The conical active peak, Mount Naka, holds the dubious honour of Japan s first recorded eruption, and is the real centre of hi no kuni: the land of fire. The views are incredible, and the mountain has a host of myths and legends attached to its history. With so much geothermal activity, there are many wonderful onsen resorts surrounding the world s largest caldera. SAPPORO CITY Sapporo, capital of Hokkaido, is famous across Japan for its ramen, beer and snow festival. It is hard to imagine this young city as it was in 1857, when its population stood at just seven people. Enlarged with the help of foreign specialists at the end of the Meiji Era ( ), this relatively recent development of the city is shown in its use of the American-style grid system of wide streets and western-style buildings. Sapporo also has an excellent botanical garden, a museum dedicated to Ainu culture and Hokkaido s largest fish market. Beer fans should not miss the opportunity to tour the Sapporo Factory, home of Japan s first beer brewery. Kanazawa Kenrokuen Okayama Matsumoto Castle kanazawa Best known for the stunning Kenroku-en Gardens, is one of Japan s best kept secrets. Ruled first by Buddhist monks and then by the powerful and wealthy Maeda clan, Kanazawa was once one of Japan s richest cities. It was also one of only a handful of cities to escape damage during the Second World War, and Kanazawa s older districts are consequently remarkably well preserved. Kanazawa s treasures reflect its rich and varied history, with geisha districts rubbing shoulders with temples and the newly reconstructed castle. Mount Aso OkAYAMA Okayama developed as a castle town during the Edo Period and later became a significant regional power. Today it is an important transportation hub as the shinkansen meets with the rail connection to Shikoku. Okayama s most famous attractions are Korakuen Gardens, considered one of Japan's top three landscape gardens, and the historic Matsumoto Castle which was originally built in Sapporo City Night view of Nagasaki NAGASAkI Visiting the tranquil Nagasaki Peace Park and imaginatively designed Atomic Bomb Museum is a thought-provoking experience. Situated on the western coast of Kyushu, Nagasaki also played a prominent role in foreign trade relations throughout history, being one of the few ports open to foreign traders during Japan s isolation period. As a result, the mixture of East and West can be seen in various parts of the city s food culture. You can sample "castella", a type of sponge cake introduced by 16th century Portugese missionaries, and "chanpon" noodles of Chinese origin. FUkUOkA PREFECTURE, FUkUOkA CITY Located on the northern coast of Kyushu, Fukuoka has traditionally served as Japan s gateway of Korea, China and the rest of Asia. Naka River which flows through the city, divided the town into two distinct districts the castle town of Fukuoka and Hakata, the town of merchants and commoners. Although since its unification in 1889 Fukuoka has developed into a modern, cosmopolitan city, cultural heritage and rich culinary traditions continue to live on in Hakata s vibrant districts of Nakasu and Tenjin. Among culinary specialties, you should certainly try the famous ramen noodles, served at small yatai stalls along the Naka s riversides. Fukuoka yatai stalls Okinawa OkINAWA Strung out to the south of Japan, the island chain of Okinawa offers visitors pristine white sand beaches in the blue waters of the East China Sea. Originally an autonomous kingdom, the islands were once known as the Ryukyu Islands, and have a culture, climate and cuisine that are simultaneously Japanese and non- Japanese. Okinawan architecture, arts, and cuisine are all unique to the islands. the prefectural capital of Naha is famous for pottery and markets. HIROSHIMA Rebuilt after the Second World War, Hiroshima is a modern city. Nevertheless, the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Park are poignant reminders of the city s tragic past, as are the swarms of origami cranes made by school children as symbols of peace. The Peace Memorial Museum documents the bomb and its aftermath, with exhibits demonstrating the destruction of the city, its people and the events leading up to it. Across the narrow stretch of the Seto Inland Sea from Hiroshima is the small island of Itsukushima. Commonly known as Miyajima, the whole island has long been considered sacred and in ancient times only the devout were allowed to step foot on the island. The iconic red torii gate, built on tidal sands, faces the majestic Itsukushima shrine at the foot of Mount Misen, and as the tide comes in the torii appears to float on the sea. All our prices include tickets that are in the lowest category. All clients will be given the option to choose an upgraded category and price at their chosen games and we will release the prices as soon as they are available. Category A tickets are only available with the purchase of official Rugby World Cup hospitality (details on request). All ticket upgrades will be charged at cost including all ticketing fees. The seating location is entirely at the discretion of RWCL and England Rugby Travel. F L I G H T S All tours include return, economy flights based on guide prices we have received from a number of airlines. The final timings and allocation of these flights to specific tours will be confirmed 11 months prior to the event, when the airlines release their full schedules. At this point, we will be able to guide pricing for any upgrade costs you may wish to book. Should you require any bespoke flights, we will base all our quotes on the 2018 price + 10%. A final cost will be confirmed 11 months prior to the event once they are available. Domestic flights & bullet trains are included in your tour package as per the individual itineraries. Exact times will be confirmed nearer the time and in exceptional circumstances may alter the itinerary of your tour. Venatour reserves the right to make any changes to itineraries to ensure the integrity of the tour and will keep you informed at all times of any changes. Any special requests you have for your flights, including seating arrangements and dietary requirements must be confirmed to us in writing at the time of booking. B a G G a G E a L L O W a N C E Please ensure that all checked baggage weighs no more than 20kgs. Although some international airlines have higher allowances, all domestic flights will only allow 20kgs. Any baggage costs incurred by clients during their tour are the sole responsibility of the individual. When travelling by Bullet train, there is generally good luggage space and we will also be using luggage couriers where required. H O T E L S Rooms are run-of-house, unless otherwise stated. This means that rooms are allocated on a random basis within each tour party and are allocated by each hotel. If you have any specific requirements eg. Disabled room, room on a low floor etc, please tell us in writing at the time of booking and we will forward your request to the relevant hotels. We will make every effort to ensure all requests are complied with but they cannot be guaranteed. Please note that in some hotels a particular room type may not be available. It is worth noting that in Japan, around 80% of the country s hotel room stock in Western style hotels are twin rooms. Very few double rooms are available. However, many of the twin rooms do contain two double beds and we will endeavour to provide a double bed when requested. Due to the shortage of double rooms, we reserve the right to allocate you a twin room. Most hotels across Japan have a check in time of 3pm. Should you arrive at a hotel earlier than this, Venatour will always endeavour to have you checked in early. This is at the sole discretion of the individual hotel and early check ins can never be guaranteed without an additional charge. Hotels are confirmed for all our packages. Occcasionally it may be necessary to change a hotel to one of equal or higher standard for operational reasons, and if this should happen we will inform you immediately. V I S a S UK passport holders are not required to have a visa for entry into Japan, as you are granted a 90 day stay on arrival. UK passports should be valid for the duration of your stay in Japan and you may be asked to show your onward/return flight ticket on arrival to prove that you are leaving.
