1 JAPAN BY SEA Aboard the Caledonian Sky With MARK VAN BAALEN, Lecturer on Earth & Planetary Sciences April 13 26, 2017

2 JAPAN BY SEA Aboard the Caledonian Sky April 13 26, nights/14 days Experience the Japanese aesthetic in a variety of forms, from Miyajima s iconic torii (gate), which seems to float on the water at high tide (cover), and the Great Buddha at Todai-ji in Nara (above), to Kyoto s Kinkaku-ji Buddhist temple (Golden Pavilion, back cover). CRUISE THROUGH THE INLAND SEA and the Sea of Japan on a delightful springtime exploration of Japan. This small nation of nearly 7,000 islands is wonderfully suited for exploration by small ship, and the 57-cabin Caledonian Sky conveys us comfortably to a fascinating variety of tranquil historic towns, artistic centers, and remote islands. Experience dramatic coastlines, sacred temples, celebrated gardens, and cutting-edge art and architecture. Meet and interact with a kabuki actor and the owner of a traditional geisha house, and try your hand at taiko drumming during a visit with the world-famous Kodo drummers. Take part in a traditional tea ceremony, attend a private performance of sacred bugaku dance, and travel on Japan s high-speed rail (the shinkansen, or bullet train ). Throughout the voyage and during time ashore in both Kyoto and Tokyo, enjoy an enriching lecture program with presentations from Harvard lecturer Mark Van Baalen. An optional pre-cruise extension to Kurashiki and Naoshima, and an optional post-cruise extension to Kamakura and Hakone, are also available. TO BOOK A TRIP CALL OR VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/TRAVEL

3 FEATURED STUDY LEADER Mark Van Baalen has served the University in a variety of roles since He received his AB in astronomy in While an undergraduate he worked on the NASA-funded OSO-D satellite that flew in 1967 and obtained the first successful ultraviolet images of the sun from orbit. Later, he turned his attention to the earth sciences, receiving his AM and PhD in geology. Since 1995 he has been a lecturer and associate in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. During that time he taught popular courses in physical and environmental geology, and acted as mentor to many undergraduates. Mark s research has included field-based projects in New England, California, and the Swiss Alps, all focusing on details of the origin of ancient ocean basins and their associated mountain belts. He has also studied the relationship between the volcanoes and earthquakes of Japan, and the always-controversial issue of nuclear power. More recently he has studied the interactions between human activities and the inexorable process of climate change. In addition to these strictly scientific pursuits, Mark has a deep interest in history, including the exploration of remote regions of the world. Mark and his wife, Louisa, recently retired from the Kennedy School of Government, have been privileged to lead numerous HAA excursions to distant lands. On these trips, Mark lectures on the natural history of the regions being visited, as well as painting a broader picture of human interaction with its environment, now and in the past. ADDITIONAL LECTURERS Mikael Adolphson is Keidanren Professor and Chair of Japanese Studies at the University of Cambridge. Professor Adolphson s current interests and projects center on cultural icons, historical narratives, and agency in societal changes. He is presently working on trade and the rise of the Heike family in the 12th century, as well as their poorly known capital of Fukuhara (present-day Kobe). Kathleen Stephens is former U.S. ambassador to South Korea and the William J. Perry Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University s Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC). She also served as U.S. Chargé d Affaires in India and U.S. Consul General in Northern Ireland and, in Washington, as Acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, and National Security Council Director for European Affairs at the White House. Taiko drumming performance styles vary widely, with Kodo among the most well-known and respected taiko groups worldwide. FOR DETAILED ITINERARIES VISIT ALUMNI.HARVARD.EDU/TRAVEL
