Backgrounder Boeing in Italy The Boeing Company has enjoyed a long-standing cooperative relationship with Italy, working closely with the Italian aerospace industry and the Italian armed forces for well over 65 years. Italy is a key player in Boeing s global network of customers, partners and suppliers and is one of the most important sources of suppliers for Boeing in Europe. Boeing has 30 direct and many indirect suppliers in Italy. Boeing and the Finmeccanica companies have a well-established partnership in key markets in the United States and Europe, providing support for various commercial and defense platforms. Boeing activities currently support about 13,000 jobs in Italy, and the company spent more than $1.851 billion with tier 1 suppliers based in Italy in 2014: More than 10,000 people are employed as a result of Boeing operations, its purchases and the spending of those employed directly or in its supply chain. More than 2,300 jobs are supported by the supply of equipment and services directly to Boeing s customers (consequential impact). Boeing Commercial Airplanes Alitalia selected the Boeing 777 as its flagship airplane. The largest Italian carrier currently operates s on intercontinental routes and is in the process of revamping its Magnifica class. Boeing Commercial Airplanes works with Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company, on the 787 Dreamliner program. Alenia manufactures 14 percent of the airframe structure. Alenia s purpose-built production plant at Grottaglie-Monteiasi, near Taranto in the Puglia region, is responsible for the central and aft fuselage sections while the horizontal stabilizer is made in Foggia, where Alenia has a long history of working in composite fiber materials. Additional activities take place in Pomigliano, near Naples. A broad range of second-tier Italian suppliers contribute to the Dreamliner program, including manufacturers of major advanced equipment and machine tools used to produce the carbon fiber components. 1
Boeing has an extensive history, dating back to the 1960s, of successful cooperation with Alenia Aermacchi on many programs, including the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and later, the design and construction of the Boeing 767. Current Boeing Commercial Airplanes programs with Alenia Aermacchi include: 787 mid-fuselage (sections 44 and 46), horizontal stabilizer and shims (tier 1 partner). 767 radome, fin and control surfaces. 777 radome and outboard flaps. Air traffic management (ATM) memorandum of cooperation and Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) contract with SELEX Sistemi Integrati. Boeing Defense, Space & Security Boeing Defense, Space & Security has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Italian industry and the Italian armed forces. All military branches currently operate or have ordered Boeing equipment, including: Italian Army: CH-47C Chinook helicopters. Italian Navy: AV-8B Harriers; ScanEagle systems and training services. Boeing partnered with the Italian Ministry of Defense and Alenia Aermacchi to develop, produce and support the KC-767A Tanker Transport aircraft for the Italian Air Force. The Italian Ministry of Defense had selected the KC-767A Tanker Transport to replace its 707 tankers, and the Ministry became the launch customer of the KC-767 International Tanker program. In May 2009, Boeing and AgustaWestland signed an agreement for the joint manufacture of 16 new CH-47F Chinook helicopters for the Italian Army. Deliveries began in 2014, and the first aircraft delivery ceremony was held in October To date, two aircraft have been delivered. Other recently completed Boeing-Italy programs include: Sea Launch for SICRAL 1B military satellite, launched in April Delta II launch services for COSMO-SkyMed Generation I dual-use satellites the fourth was successfully launched in November
Boeing is also partnering with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Marinette Marine Corporation, to capture the U.S. Navy Ship-to-Shore Connector (SSC) program and provide a lower cost, higher availability, nextgeneration platform. In Rome, Boeing Defense Space & Security is represented by Oris Davis, director of International Business Development, Southern Europe. Boeing Presence in Italy Boeing has approximately 300 employees in Italy working in supplier management, field service, business development, sales and marketing, communications and other support functions at various locations: Rome: Boeing Italy headquarters and Field Services at Fiumicino International Airport. Pratica di Mare Airport (Rome): KC-767 Tanker program. Naples: KC-767 Tanker at Alenia facilities and Boeing Commercial Airplanes supplier management team. Pomigliano d Arco (Naples): 787 engineering and manufacturing and 767 manufacturing (flaps, slats and vertical spin) with Alenia Aermacchi. Turin: Programs with Thales Alenia Space Italia. Vergiate (Varese): CH-47F program with AgustaWestland. Grottaglie and Foggia: Alenia Aermacchi 787 program. Portici: Research office at IMAST. Milan: Field service. Viterbo: CH-47F customer support. The Boeing team in Italy also includes approximately 100 employees working at Massa (Tuscany) for Jeppesen (formerly C-MAP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. Boeing appointed Antonio De Palmas as president of Boeing Italy in January
Global Corporate Citizenship Boeing is active in Italy in the corporate citizenship area. The initiatives pursued reinforce Boeing s reputation in the country and demonstrate the company s commitment to Italy to benefit the local communities in which it operates. Boeing is attentive to important community needs in Italy, with a special focus on the environment, the community, and arts and culture. Since 2004, Boeing Italy has supported two Global Corporate Citizenship projects every year in the following areas: Environment: Since 2008, Boeing, in partnership with Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company, has been promoting a project called Natural mente scuola: environmental education and technology. The project is aimed at increasing students awareness of the importance of environmental protection and on everyday habits that everyone can adopt to have a greener world. A 7th edition of this highly successful program is currently in progress. Since 2011, Boeing, in partnership with its supplier Umbra Cuscinetti and Jeppesen, has also been promoting a project called Svitati per l Ambiente ( Crazy for the Environment ). This project focuses on increasing students awareness on the importance of respecting the environment and on the daily ways of behaving that everyone can adopt make the world greener. Civic: In 2009, Boeing sponsored the program Migration and Change: Learning to Live Together in an Increasingly Diverse World, which addresses, through a series of workshops, the issues of cultural, ethnic and religious diversity. The program targets school students and undergraduates in Rome to increase their awareness and understanding of the processes of integration. Arts and culture: In 2007 and 2008, Boeing supported two research studies conducted by the prestigious cultural association Civita. One study was on culture and innovation on the Web and in telecommunications and the other on the visitors of museums and archaeological areas. In addition, from 2004 to 2006, Boeing sponsored the Pomigliano Jazz music festival. Health and human services. Boeing has promoted a number of projects addressed to people with Down syndrome and their families ( Telefono D project); children with AIDS and infectious disease staying at Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome ( Soccorso clown project); and people with 4
mental disabilities living in a family-house in Rome ( Citizens of the World project). # # # Contact: Marcello Bruni International Corporate Communications marcello.bruni@boeing.com Marcia Costley Boeing Defense, Space & Security International Communications marcia.b.costley@boeing.com Dan Mosely Boeing Commercial Airplanes Communications +44 (0) daniel.mosely@boeing.com Last revised May
