The Heidelberg funicular railways delight more than two million passengers per year with impressive views of the town, the Neckar valley and the Rhine lowlands as far as the Palatinate wine route. The contrasts that come together in the funicular railways lend them a particular charm. One of the most modern funiculars in Germany now operates on the lower railway, which was opened back in By contrast the historic cars on the upper funicular have been running since the route was extended between Molkenkur and Königstuhl in This makes the upper railway one of the oldest funiculars in Germany. This route has stops at the main station, the Altstadt S-Bahn station and the central Bismarckplatz. Due to current construction measures at the main station, it can lead to diversions. There is ground level access to the cars at the Castle station. There are wheelchair lifts at Kornmarkt and Molkenkur stations. This may only be used by wheelchairs for safety reasons. We offer the loan of a wheelchair for passengers with restricted mobility. For reasons of historic preservation, unfortunately we have not been able to provide a wheelchair lift for the upper funicular railway. For this reason we recommend that wheelchair users only ride on the upper funicular if accompanied by a carer, as it will be necessary to negotiate steps. Pushchairs will also have to be carried up the steps for the same reason. Our conductors will be happy to help unaccompanied visitors with this. Please note that the upper historic funicular is relatively narrow, so larger pushchairs will not fit in the cars. If you are travelling with infants, we suggest that you use a buggy. Tickets You can pre-book (minimum order of 50 tickets) on the internet at or by calling +49 (0) Your tickets will be available for collection from the counter at the valley station. Please send us your order at least three working days before you wish to travel. Tickets for pre-school groups, families and free travel, as well as dicounted tickets requiring verification are only available at the counter. The Heidelberger Straßen- und Bergbahn company, which is owned by Stadtwerke Heidelberg public utilities, is responsible for the funicular railways operations on behalf of the town of Heidelberg.

3 Uplifting views What to look out for en route It doesn t matter whether you simply enjoy the panoramic view on the way up, or whether you get out at one of the stations to experience the sights and nature: Heidelberg shows its most beautiful side from the funicular railways. With a total length of 1.5 km the Heidelberg funicular railway is the longest in Germany. Kornmarkt, valley station The Kornmarkt valley station is situated in the heart of Heidelberg s old town. Start here and take a leisurely stroll to the Alte Brücke, Karlsplatz or the town hall in the market square and allow yourself to succumb to the charm of Heidelberg s idyllic architecture. Explore one of Europe s most attractive pedestrian zones. Wander through the alleyways of the old town, discover countless shops away from the high street and visit cosy cafés and restaurants.

4 mar coba arneb beck eck_ pixe lio Heidelberg Castle station Heidelberg Castle is one of the best-known castle ruins in the world and it offers you an impressive view of the town and the peacefully meandering Neckar. Its history has been dynamic since the start of its construction in the 13th century. The lords of the castle continued to add to the building over the course of several centuries, including the Ottheinrich building, one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Germany. Then it was badly damaged in the Palatinate War of Succession. The castle ruin has been the epitome of German Romanticism since the 19th century. Molkenkur, transfer station This is the intersection point between the upper and lower funicular railways. Or you can disembark and take a relaxing stroll through nature. You can really feel history here, because it is the former site of the fortress of Heidelberg. All that is left of it today is an 800 year-old moat and a few remnants of walls. You can enjoy coffee and cake on the terrace of a guest house while taking in the view over the old town where, in times past, spa guests partook of goat whey during fasting. Alternatively the Riosk, a kiosk with regional food and beverages right next to the funicular station, is perfect for a quick snack. Königstuhl The upper funicular takes you to the town s highest point with a creak and a clatter, where a fairytale panorama awaits you over the Neckar valley, Rhine lowlands and, on a clear day, as far as Alsace. High above the university town you will find peace and tranquillity on the numerous woodland paths. You could explore the Via naturae or the nature trail, enabling you to see the surrounding forests from a different perspective. The centre for birds of prey puts on exciting falconry displays, while the Fairy Tale Park provides entertainment for children and parents alike. An exhibition gallery at the station showcases the history of rail travel in Heidelberg, and at the Riosk on the higher level you can relax and take in the view from the terrace whilst enjoying regional produce.

It is valid for a return trip from the Kornmarkt via the Castle to the Molkenkur. It also includes entry to the castle grounds, the wine cellar and the German Pharmacy Museum (except for holders of VRN tickets and pre-school groups).
