In cool season (Nov-Feb), temperatures are comfortable. In rainy season (May-Oct), you will find the lush landscape but some islands shut down and boat service is limited during stormy weather. 7 WHAT TO KNOW Thai baht (B) GMT plus seven hours International air arrivals are entitled to 30-day visa, 15-day visa at land borders and 60-day tourist visa through application at the Thai consulate. ATMs widespread with a charge of 150B foreign-account transaction. Visa and MasterCard accepted at most shops. Buy inexpensive pre-paid SIM cards for GSM phones. 3G is available. Free wi-fi usually available in cafés and hotels. Thailand uses 220V AC electricity: power outlets most commonly feature two-prong round or flat sockets. Tipping is not standard but it is appreciated. If there is a small bit of change from a restaurant bill or metered taxi, it is common to offer it as a tip. GETTING AROUND Extensive and affordable for travel between town. Cheap domestic connections on low-cost airlines. Slow but scenic between Bangkok and other provinces. Convenient but make sure the taxi driver uses the fare meter. The meter starts at 35B. Don t forget to carry a map or card from your hotel. Easy to rent for local tours. 10 PHUKET OLD TOWN 191 Thalang Road, Tambon Talat Yai, Mueang, Phuket , , The old quarter of Phuket is a living museum of the island, where Sino-Portuguese architecture in sweet colours remains part of daily life, mirroring the glorious past along Deebuk, Krabi, Thalang, and Yaowarat Roads. All the roads are inter-connected, allowing unhindered exploration. Many of the beautiful buildings have now become restaurants, hotels, chic coffee houses, and souvenir shops. The century-old Sino-Portuguese buildings comprise different rooms which tell about the journeys of the Chinese to the island and the history of people and authentic Phuket cuisine (admission fee 200 baht). NEED TO KNOW Breakfast in the old town Admire the charming, old buildings and roam around for a local-style breakfast in the old town of Phuket. The house maintains many of its original furnishings, such as a mother-ofpearl in-laid chessboard, items from Penang, and Italian floor tiles. There are also examples of Peranakan costumes and utensils of old Phuket (admission fee 150 baht). KATHU MINING MUSEUM Moo 5 Kathu-Na Ko Road, Tambon Kathu, Kathu, Phuket , museum@kathutin.com Daily 9am-4pm Though mining in Phuket has come to an end, Kathu Mining Museum continues to entertain and educate visitors about the industry that once shaped the province. Situated in a replica of a Sino-Portuguese building, the museum features mining tools, full demonstrations of mining, and examples of minerals found in Phuket (admission 100 baht for adults and 50 baht for kids). Take an architectural walk Wandering around Phuket s old quarter is a leisurely and interesting activity in which delegates can learn about the island and its beautiful architecture. 12 SARASIN BRIDGE Thalang, Phuket TAT Phuket Office , phuket The bridge is both a historical site and a symbol which indicates that you are entering Phuket. Built to link Phuket s Chat Chai Pier and Phangnga s Noon Pier at Chong Pak Phra marine channel, the bridge is also the origin of a love legend of a Phuket couple. The bridge now serves as a gateway to the Andaman s Pearl, completed with a spacious walkway, an observation tower, and dedicated corners for photography. WAT CHALONG Chao Fah Tawantok Road, Tambon Chalong, Mueang Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th Daily 7am-5pm , Wat Chaitharam or Wat Chalong is a landmark and spiritual centre of Phuket, a place that visitors should not miss. The spacious Buddhist temple houses Phra Chom Pagoda which keeps relics of Lord Buddha from Sri Lanka. Visitors pay homage to replicas of the abbots, Luang Pho Chaem, Luang Pho Chuang, and Luang Pho Kluam, who contributed to the development of Phuket in many ways. Wax models of the three abbots are kept in the old monks accommodation and the public is allowed to enter. NEED TO KNOW The famous monk Luang Pho Chaem was a famous Buddhist monk of Phuket. 13 CULTURE + HERITAGE WAT PHRA YAI On top of Nakkerd Mount, Tambon Karon, Mueang, Phuket Phra Buddha Ming Mongkol Stattha Foundation , mingmongkol_45@windowslive.com Daily 7am-5pm , Situated on Nakkerd Mount, a stone s throw from Wat Chalong, this religious place has become a new attraction of Phuket. Wat Phra Yai or Wat Buddha Ming Monkol Eknakkiri houses a big Buddha statue which bears the same name as the temple. Situated on top of the mountain, this 45 metre high jade Buddha image can be seen from far away, and from its base, visitors get a bird s eye view over Phuket town and the Andaman Sea. WAT PHRA THONG Moo 7, Tambon Thepkrasattri, Thalang, Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th Daily 7am-5pm , Wat Phra Thong is an ancient temple which is the origin of the legend of the rising Buddha image. A gold Buddha image was found rising from the ground in what was once a rice paddy. Local people tried to dig it up but failed. Instead, they built a pavilion over it and it is now a spiritual centre of Phuket. Follow the footsteps of Krathu Community Follow the route and walk back to the cradle of Chinese culture which set roots in Phuket. The community reflects blending of Thai and Chinese which migrated into Phuket as tin mine labours. These Chinese people brought the vegetarian tradition, which becomes a significant tradition of the province. PHUKET MICE City Breaks 13

14 WAT MAI LUANG PU SUPHA Tambon Chalong, Mueang, Phuket TAT Phuket Office , Daily 7am-5pm Wat Mai Luang Pu Supha or Wat Silasupharam is famous for its strict adherence to Buddhist practices. It was established by Luang Pu Supa, a well-known monk from the North-Eastern region of Thailand who learnt dhamma and vipassana from the famous Luang Pu Man and Luang Pu Sook. Luang Pu Supa loved to travel and built temples in the places he visited. He died at the age of 119 years. NEED TO KNOW SURIN CIRCLE CLOCK TOWER City centre on Phuket Road TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th , Surin Circle Clock Tower is one of those places that visitors love to photograph because of its Sino-Portuguese architectural style. It is the sort of place where people like to sit back and relax, especially at night when the whole area is illuminated. Wat Mueang of Thalang Wat Mueang Komalphat in Thalang is an interesting place. The temple once served as a military base in the fights against Burmese troops. It now houses a statue of two heroines, Chan and Mook, who led the army in that war. 14 MICE City Breaks PHUKET

15 CULTURE + HERITAGE THAO THEP KASATTRI THAO SI SUNTHON MONUMENT Port Circle, Tambon Si Sunthon, Thalang, Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th , Thao Thep Kasattri Thao Si Sunthon Monument features life-size statues of the two heroines who saved Phuket town from Burmese invasion. Thao Thep Kasattri, Chan, and her younger sister Thao Si Sunthon, Mook, led the Siamese army to fight the Burmese troops after the sudden death of her husband, the ruler of Phuket. Their efforts saved Phuket and descendents built this monument to mark their bravery. The statues, with Thai traditional swords in their hands, are located right in the heart of Thalang District, at Port Circle. THALANG NATIONAL MUSEUM Moo 3, Tambon Si Sunthon, Thalang, Phuket , Daily 9am-4pm, except special holidays , There are numerous museums in Phuket and one of the most interesting ones is Thalang National Museum. Phuket people built this museum to showcase antiques represent the historical and cultural values of the province. The museum comprises two buildings in the local style of Phuket homes. It features terracotta ware, stoneware, and ornaments found around the island and in the southern part of Thailand. Important items include statues of Shiva and the head of a Phu Dhevi statue in Pallava style (admission fee 20 baht). Old town theme Phuket downtown, with its old town theme and nostalgic atmosphere, offers a wide range of facilities for organising conferences. 16 THAVORN MUSEUM 74 Ratsada Road, Mueang, Phuket , , Daily , In1963, the 200-room Thavorn Hotel was recognised as the most modern and luxurious hotel in the southern part of Thailand. It was the location of the first elevator in Phuket. However, business deteriorated and Thavorn Hotel is no longer the most luxurious hotel in town, but it now has a museum that preserves the memories that reflect the glorious days of Phuket with photos, paintings, and antiquities. These exhibits fill the hotel s lobby with a nostalgic atmosphere (admission fee 30 baht, hotel guests free). BANG NEOW SHRINE Phuket Road, Ban Bang Neow, Tambon Talat Yai, Mueang, Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th , Established in 1904, Bang Neow Shrine serves as a significant spiritual centre for people of Chinese descent in Phuket. The shrine annually organises the big Vegetarian Festival that attracts many participants and is now regarded as the most important tourism festival of Phuket. NEED TO KNOW Shrines and tales Shrines serve as spiritual centres where people gather for religious ceremonies. Each shrine tells interesting stories about its locality. There is a library dedicated to Phuket s art, culture, and history. Advanced contact is recommended so that the centre can provide a specialist guide. JUI TUI SHRINE Soi Phuthon, Ranong Road, Mueang, Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th JuituiShrinePhuket This big shrine is among the most famous in the province. During the Vegetarian Festival, the shrine is crowded with locals and tourists who come to witness the parade of the statues of gods and goddesses. This shrine has a close relationship with Bang Neow Shrine, both housing statues from Rommanee while its shrine was re-built after fire damage. Follow the trail of Phuket s first hotel The Memory at On On Hotel was the first hotel in Phuket. It featured in the blockbuster film The Beach and was given a major facelift in 2013 in which a small meeting room was added. 18 PATONG BEACH 15 kilometres northwest of Phuket town TAT Phuket Office , N, E Patong is generally regarded as the most lively and colourful beach in Phuket. Along its white, sandy, crescent-shaped beach, there are numerous restaurants, hotels, bars, shops, dive centres, and water activity providers, including jet skis, speedboats, and sailboats. Patong is the beach that never sleeps. During the day, beach-lovers come to relax, while at night, the place hums with life the entertainment Mecca of Phuket. It is good for swimming and diving as a coral reef stretches from the beach to Ko Pu. Another popular activity is surfing, and there are a number of surf schools which cater to all levels of learners. Memorial to the tsunami Patong was one of the many beaches that were damaged by the tsunami in Every year, on December 24, memorial events are held in every province that was affected by the catastrophe. Besides exhibitions, at night the beach at Patong is illuminated by thousands of candles to commemorate the people who died in the tragedy. Conferences and meetings that occur during this period often include attendances at these commemorative occasions as part of CSR activities.

A mountain-top viewpoint offers a great outlook over Kata Beach and Karon Beach. KAMALA BEACH About 26 kilometres from Phuket town TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th , Kamala Beach is a peaceful beach that is a perfect place for families. The beach-goers here spend their time sunbathing, reading, listening to music, and waiting for the sunset. Beaches and connections Beaches are not only places to relax but they can also be venues for team-building activities which develop the relationships between delegates. 20 RAWAI BEACH 16.5 kilometres from Phuket town TAT Phuket Office , N E MAI KHAO BEACH 8 kilometres from Sirinat National Park s headquarters TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th Mai Khao is the longest beach in Phuket, only a few minutes drive from Phuket International Airport, and a place for relaxation amidst a handful of luxurious resorts. It is well-known as a hatching place for leatherback turtles, a nursery for red frog crabs, and the best views of the sunset on the island. Rawai is the place for fresh seafood. Restaurants line the beach and offer a great variety of seafood dishes. Rawai is known as the home of the sea gypsies. It is not a beach for swimming but it has a pier for boats leaving for Ko He, Ko Loan, Ko Bon, and Ko Racha. NEED TO KNOW Keep it forever Besides keeping places clean, tourists should bear in mind the sustainability of tourism. Visitors should not disturb sea turtles or crabs during their hatching periods, particularly on Mai Khao Beach. Please avoid making loud noises and touching eggs. 20 MICE City Breaks PHUKET

21 BEACH + ISLAND NAI HAN BEACH North of Phromthep Cape TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th , Nai Han Beach, just to the north of Phromthep Cape, is a clean beach with fine-grained sand. With a handful of resorts located up on the hill, the beach is peaceful and tourists love to sunbathe here. However, during the monsoon season, strong winds and waves make it dangerous for swimming. Shopping at Rawai Besides fishing villages and numerous seafood restaurants, Rawai Beach is famous for its seashells. Seashells of various sizes and colours are sold in different forms, such as mobiles, necklaces, rings, laces, ornaments, and chic decorative items. SURIN BEACH 24 kilometres from Phuket town TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th , Though it is a small beach, the waves make Surin Beach a favourite place for surfers. Many people love to spend their time relaxing here among the crystalclear water, blue sky, and sandy beach. LAEM SINGH 1 kilometre south of Surin Beach TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th Laem Singh Beach is often forgotten by Thais, but it is a heaven for tourists who come to sunbathe, swim, and enjoy a day on a peaceful beach with rocky headlands and lush vegetation. 22 MU KO RACHA Large islands south of Phuket TAT Phuket Office , Mu Ko Racha is made up of two islands, Ko Racha Yai and Ko Racha Noi. Ko Racha Yai impresses visitors with its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, and Kon Kae Bay which is a popular dive site. Some 10 kilometres away is Ko Racha Noi. This coral island has rocky cliffs and only a handful of beaches, making it ideal for fishing. Tour packages to these islands are available through tour operators. KO BON South of Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th A visit to Ko Bon involves hiring a boat for a day trip from Rawai Beach. The island has no resorts or bungalows, but beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. NEED TO KNOW Pearls and wisdom Most pearls now available in Phuket come from farms as natural pearls have become very rare. However, don t be disappointed as pearl oysters in the farms are kept and raised in a natural way through a synthetic process that allows the production of pearls. 23 BEACH + ISLAND KO RANG YAI Small island to the east of Phuket TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th Ko Rang Yai is regarded as the real pearl of the Andaman Sea. Besides its clear and very clean water and white sandy beaches, the island has a major pearl farm. The island has only one resort. Groups of visitors can visit the pearl farm and learn about the business and techniques, as well as enjoy lunch and a range of activities. KO KHAI From Chalong Bay, it takes only 20 minutes to Ko Khai Nok and Ko Khai Nai by boat TAT Phuket Office , tatphket@tat.or.th N E Ko Khai is made up of three islands, Ko Khai Nok, Ko Khai Nai, and Ko Khai Nui, but tourists are not allowed to visit the last island. Ko Khai Nai is famous for its white sandy beaches, clear water, and colourful coral reef. Ko Khai Nok has shops, a sunbathing beach, and clear water. The themed performances involve displays of dance, folklore, and Thailand s local lifestyles, all presented using modern techniques. With over 100 performers, stunning scenery, and impressive costumes, Siam Niramit s shows make viewers feel like they are walking through the land of legends (please call for information about admission). NEED TO KNOW Another viewpoint Windmill Viewpoint at the southern end of Phuket is a great site for sunrise and sunset views. It is located on top of Khao Daeng Mountain near the white turbine tower. 25 ACTIVITIES SAM AO VIEWPOINT Between Nai Han Beach and Kata Noi Beach, southwestern corner of the island TAT Phuket Office , , Phuket has a number of viewpoints. One of them is at Sam Ao, offering a great view over the sea and three bays at the same time. It is situated on the mountain top by the island ring road from Nai Han Beach to Kata Noi Beach. From there, the dark blue sea and white sandy beaches of Kata Noi Beach, Kata Beach, and Karon Beach can be admired. 32 THE KHAO PHRA THAEO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY Thepkasattri Road, Thalang, Phuket Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary is regarded as the last virgin forest area of the island. There are many nature trails full of natural beauty, streams, and waterfalls along the way, such as Bang Pae, Pak Krok, and Ton Sai Waterfall. The sanctuary is home to a rare palm species, Kerriodoxa elegans Dransfield or white elephant palm. SIRINAT NATIONAL PARK Sirinat National Park, Nai Yang Beach, Tambon Sakoo, Thalang, Phuket Daily 6am-6pm , Phuket has a few national parks. One of them is Sirinat National Park, the seaside park where pine forests, white sandy beaches and beautiful coral reefs are well preserved. With a height of between 5 and 7 metres, it has beautiful large, flat, circular leaves that are glossy green on the upper surfaces and white underneath. The petiole is very darkly coloured.
