3 WELCOME Shrewsbury International School, Bangkok looks forward to welcoming you to the Primary FOBISSEA Games The Games will be held over 3 action-packed days, from Thursday 14th June to Saturday 16th June 2012 in Bangkok and we hope you will enjoy the warmth and charm of Thailand during your visit. This booklet is designed to give parent supporters information to help them plan their trip to the Games. PARENT LIAISON Each school is requested to appoint a Parent Liaison who will collect ticket requests and be the point of contact for parent supporters in your school. Khun Tan, a Shrewsbury parent, has been designated as Shrewsbury s Parent Liaison and she will coordinate with each school s Parent Liaison for arrangements regarding Gala Dinner Tickets, transport requirements, etc. Tan can be contacted via at anya.tan@gmail.com. Please do feel free to contact her if you have any questions. COMING TO THAILAND Visa Information: Visa requirement vary according to your nationality. For further information regarding visas for entry into Thailand, please click on the following link: Currency: The official currency of Thailand is the Thai Baht. Currency exchange is available in the airport, after customs. Most foreign currencies and traveller cheques are easily changed at banks, hotels or moneychangers. Please check the Bank of Thailand s website for up to date exchange rates, but as a rough guide: 1 British Pound = Approximately 50 Baht 1 US Dollar = Approximately 30 Baht Telecommunications: If you already have a mobile phone, the easiest thing to do is to buy a pre-paid SIM card which saves you paying for roaming charges. These top up cards can be bought from anywhere (including seven eleven) and the instruction to top up are in English and Thai. If you do not already own a mobile phone then there are mobiles for rent at Bangkok International Airport - Suvarnabhumi. However, they are not cheap and you might want to consider buying a new phone for use. Mobile phones can be bought all over Bangkok. The MBK shopping mall has a wide selection of small phone shops and main dealers too. If you prefer to pay with a credit card then you can visit any of the major shopping centres such as Siam Paragon, Central World and Central Chidlom. SHREWSBURY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Page 2

Consuelo and Khun Noi will be happy to help with minor ailments. There are many hospitals and clinics in Bangkok providing high quality western medical services and in general they are very good. Doctors can be seen at any hospital or clinic. The three hospitals most widely used by foreigners are Bumrungrad Hospital and Samitivej Hospital (both in Sukhumvit Road) and BNH (Bangkok Nursing Home). BNH is located on Soi Convent and is the closest hospital to Shrewsbury International School. Make sure your have travel insurance that covers medical treatment. 6 Transportation TAXI There are numerous taxis in Bangkok, and it is not difficult to catch a cab. Taxis are all metered and the starting fare is 35 baht. Drivers will usually start the meter without prompting. Please make sure the meter is running when you are in the taxi. You are advised to take a note with your destination written in Thai with you, since the majority of taxi drivers are not well-versed in English communication. BTS/MRT The Skytrain (BTS) and underground (MRT) rail systems are excellent. They are air-conditioned, clean and usually comfortable except during peak traffic times when carriages can become somewhat crowded. The two systems connect the main shopping, entertainment and business areas of the city. There are two BTS lines in Bangkok, Silom and Sukhumvit. Interchange between these two lines takes place at Siam Station. Internchange between BTS and MRT can be done at Saladaeng and Asoke stations. It takes just five minutes by boat to get to Taksin BTS Station from Shrewsbury International School pier. SHUTTLE BOAT Shrewsbury International School has its own boats, which provide an easy and quick link to Bangkok s sky-train (Taksin Station) and the city centre. River taxis and express boats can be used to explore many historic sites and attractions at the riverside. COACH TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENT Alternatively, a school may wish to hire a coach to provide transportation between one central hotel location and the sporting venues for its parent supporters. Coaches can be 15 or 30-seater vehicles. If so, please have your Parent Liaison inform Tan and a quotation will be given. 7 Eating and Drinking FOOD AND DRINK AT COMPETITION VENUE Stalls will be available for parents to purchase food, snacks and drinks at the competition venues. Cash can be paid directly to the vendors at each stall. Parents can also get lunch and drinks from restaurants in Chatrium Hotel which is located right next to the school. Below is the list of restaurants and cafe in Chatrium Hotel. River Barge (Lobby Level) During lunch and dinner, River Barge offers a la carte dining where international and regional specialties are interwoven while it s fine dining style buffets provide a wonderful mix of Eastern, Western and Pacific Rim cuisine prepared for you a la minute through interactive cooking stations. Breakfast from 6.00 am; Lunch from midday; Dinner from 6.00 pm Silver Waves (36th Floor) Silver Waves presents an enticing selection of both classical and innovative Cantonese cuisine from delicately handmade dim sum to sumptuous feasts including specialties such as Peking Duck and BBQ Pork and creative Chinese Tapas. Lunch from am; Pre- dinner Tapas from 5.00 pm; Dinner from 6.00 pm Lobby Lounge (Lobby Level) Lobby Lounge offers a wide selection of snacks and refreshments and is the perfect place to be seen, meet people and mix and mingle. Open daily from 10.oo am. Treats Gourmet (Lobby Level) Treats Gourmet offers a wonderful selection of daily fresh baked treats and gourmet items. Open daily from 7.oo am. In addition there is a Starbucks (7am-8pm) and Sai Zen Japanese restaurant (10am-10pm) on the ground floor of the Chatrium Residence, (middle tower next to the Chatrium Hotel) and a Seven-Eleven store on the ground floor of the Chatrium Condominium (tower closest to the roadside). 8 RECOMMENDED RESTAURANTS CLOSE TO COMPETITION VENUE Street food (under 100 baht) Pad Thai stall, Chaorenkrung, soi 81: There is a lady who makes one of the best pad thais in Bangkok! A single portion is wrapped in newspaper and cost 30 baht. She will also ask how much chilli you want. Mango and sticky rice stall, just along from the pad thai stall. A favourite thai desert costing 60 baht per portion. Various other delicious street food stalls can be found along Chan Road (good for sitting and eating) and outside Robinsons (good for takeaway curries). Budget restaurants ( ) Opposite Robinsons and the Bangrak night market and very near the Shangri-la are two very convenient restaurants. Queen of Curry; excellent restaurant for delicious Thai curries. The owner once had a restaurant in the UK and therefore is very sympathetic to the needs of the Western taste and will give the option of how hot you like your food. Rock Steak; good for sandwiches, pasta, pizza and beer! Very friendly and welcoming staff. Harmonique, Charoenkrung, soi 34. An excellent restaurant if you re in a group. Order lots of small dishes and share! Delicious Thai food in a lovely setting. For a treat ( ) The Mandarin Oriental (catch the boat at Saphan Taksin pier). Delicious food for lunch or the evening meal but if you really want to spoil yourself, try the afternoon tea in the Authors Lounge. For cocktails Chatrium Riverside Hotel, 36th floor: Go between 5pm-8pm for Happy Hour, excellent selection of cocktails and wine for 100 baht. Whilst you re there, why not try the Chinese Tapas (3 for 100 baht). Viva Aviv: By the Riverside at the River City complex (you can get a boat to the River City from Saphan Taksin). 9 DINNER CRUISE On the last evening of the competition, all participants will be attending a gala dinner organized by Shrewsbury International School at Chatrium Riverside Hotel. To enjoy the final evening in style, parents supporters can request Shrewsbury International School to arrange a dinner cruise for you via your respective school s parent liaison. Grand Pearl Cruise Date: 16th June 2012 Time: 7.30 pm 9.30 pm Price: 1500 Baht (Adults) 1200 Baht (Children) 19:00 hrs. Check-in at La Grande Pearl Restaurant, River City Shopping Complex hrs. Board the Grand Pearl. Welcome cocktail will be served hrs. Departure from River City Pier. The boat will sail up river allowing diners the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent night views of Bangkok and its famous landmarks: Wat Arun - The Temple of Dawn - and the Grand Palace hrs. Charoen Krung Soi 76 close to school Chatuchak Weekend Market Chatuchak is a huge weekend market that offers everything from antique wood carving, clay handicrafts, local souvenirs from every part of Thailand, handmade decorated flowers to plants, ceramics, Chinese wares trendy fashion and silk. BTS Mo Chit, MRT Chatuchak Park Station MBK Shopping Center MBK is probably Bangkok's best known shopping mall, popular with both tourists and locals. Eight floors packed with 2,000 shops selling everything from clothing, handbags, leather products and luggage to furniture, mobile phones, electric appliances, cameras, stationery and DVDs. BTS National Stadium Panthip Plaza IT Mall Thailand's largest IT and computer mall and is the best place to go if looking for a new laptop, PC or any other item of IT equipment. BTS Ratchathewi and then taxi to Panthip Plaza on Phetchaburi Road Platinum Fashion Mall Thailand s largest fashion mall. Also sells wholesale. Also includes restaurants to suit every budget as well as a multiplex movie theatre and the Siam Ocean World (the largest aquarium in South East Asia). BTS Siam Siam Square Siam Square is, in essence, the hub of all things cool. It is an open-air shopping area that radiates a feeling of creativity. Tribes of bright and bold-slogan T-shirts stand proud next to tailored suits and sporting goods. BTS Siam Central World CentralWorld mega-shopping complex offers one of the most exciting (an exhausting) shopping experiences in Bangkok. It has everything from brand name boutiques, funky fashion, high-tech gadgets, bookshops and designer furniture to imported groceries, beauty salons, gourmet eateries and an ice rink. BTS SIam Emporium Luxurious fashion and lifestyle shopping complex situated in Sukhumvit Road. Shops include leading international brands, department store, a movie complex, supermarket, a wide selection of cafés and restaurants, beauty salons, jewellery shops and more. BTS Phrom Phong Fixed prices are the norm in department stores, but at most other places bargaining is to be expected. Generally, you can obtain a final figure of between 10-30% lower than the original asking price. Much depends on your skills and the shopkeeper's mood. 15 CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PARENTS I won t pressure my child in any way I know that this is their sport not mine I will not use bad language, nor will I harass players, coaches, officials or other spectators I will never argue with an official or administrator. If I disagree with a decision or have a query, I will inform the coach or manager after the competition I will encourage my child to compete within the rules and respect officials and coaches decisions no matter what I will teach my child to respect the efforts of their opponents I will remember that children learn best by example so I will applaud good plays/performances by both my child s team and their opponents I will give positive comments that motivate and encourage continued effort I will focus on my child s and teams efforts and performance not the score I will thank the coaches, officials and other volunteers who give their time to conduct the event for my child I will help when asked by a coach or official I won t criticise or ridicule my child s performance after the game I will respect the rights, dignity and worth of all people involved in the sport, regardless of their gender, ability or cultural background.
