Conditionally Registered Dogs Eligibility to Compete in Field Trials The Board reviewed a request from the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America and the Club of America. The request is to make conditionally registered dogs ineligible to participate in AKC ield events where pre ix titles are earned. This will be discussed further at the November meeting.

12 NORM SAYS ADDRESS: Last month I told you I would try to tell you something about scent, but before I do I would like to ask you the readers, do you like my articles, if so what would you like me to write about in the future? I would also like to thank Doctor Gordon Theilen DVM for advice on this months article. Scent is something we can't see or touch but we know that it is their because God gave us the ability to smell. So the best example of scent is smoke. We can see smoke but we can't touch it as the case with scent. But I believe they act in very similar ways on the earths surface. Have you ever looked at a Smoke Stack and watched the way it moves or dissipates in the wind. Or a car that is blowing black smoke from its exhaust. I do this all the time and I am amazed at how much different it is in weather and wind situations. So lets take weather irst, I ask the question quite often, what is the best and what is the worst weather for our dogs to smell a bird? These are only my opinion, and if you have a better one let me know. So lets take the best irst, in my opinion a warm rain with a slight breeze. When it is raining and the bird planter rides by my horse I can smell the birds in his sack, and my nose is not one of the best. Two factors come in to play here, moisture and it is warm. Let me give you another example poor a bucket of water on the ground, on a hot day, with no breeze, and place a bird on top of where you pored the water and bring a dog in to point it. The dog will be able to point 360 degrees around the bird. Why you ask, because we have moisture, and scent rises with heat. Next lets take the worst weather, Fog, why is it the worst you ask, because it is cold, and we usually have no breeze. Cold pushes the sent down. The next worst weather is a strong wind. I hate a strong wind, my horse hates it and so do my dogs. It makes my eyes water my nose to run and gives me a sense of insecurity, but one old timer once said, BET TER TO RUN THAN NOT AT ALL, we can not control the weather. Look at the smoke stack or the car with the bad exhaust, the smoke dissipates very rapidly. Another example in a gusty wind, the dog goes on point, handler tries to ind the bird, suddenly the dog goes soft on point, he moves his head around, what happened you ask? I believe scent like smoke bounces over the ground like a sine wave. What happened the dog smelled the bird but the wind shifted and now the sent from the bird is bouncing over the dogs head. The handler may try ordering the dog up to relocate and possible the same thing may happen again. Some judges will fault the dog, I say look at the whole picture before you make any decision. Snow is next, I was in Denver many years ago and we had a violent Snow storm. After awhile they stopped the trial and waited. When the weather cleared, the sun came out and it was warm and nice. All the dogs that ran that day had great bird work, from them came all the placements for that years National Championship, not one dog that ran in the snow storm placed. I ran all my dogs in the snow storm. What I am trying to do here is educate a few people who judge Field Trials. Let me relate a story of many years ago. We were at Fort Ord, Ca. And I was one of the judges. In this one brace an English Setter went on point, by the way this is my favorite breed of bird dogs. My judging partner remarked to me, Norm have you ever seen a more beautiful sight in your life. I replied no, but the wind is blowing up his butt hole. My judging partner had no idea where the wind was coming from, he was not thinking, only looking at how great the style of the dog on point was. The dog had been trained on those grounds and the owner always put a bird in that bush. In conclusion what I have tried to do today is make some of you who are able to think, to look at the weather, look at the conditions, and make the right decision when placing those dogs you are judging. Quote of the month, This one came from Doctor Theilen. He and I had been to the White Mountains, training and Field Trialing. Up on his return, he went

13 to church and his pastor asked him Gordon where have you been? Gordon replied, to a Field Trial, and then gave him this quote. Quote of the month, If God judged us like Field Trial Judges, judge our dogs. Their would be very few people in heaven. Norm Nelson As we close the doors on our 2011 Summer Camp and drive away, we have time to re lect on the summer. Kim and I traveled up to Tioga, North Dakota mid July. A trailer full of oldtimers to tune up and prepare for upcoming Nationals and a group of very nice young hopefuls to get out on the prairies. Initially we had wet weather with some really thunderous storms which then lead into typical North Dakota summer, cool mornings and warm afternoons. We continued our obedience, roading and liberated bird work while we impatiently waited for the speargrass to fall so we could get out on the wild birds! We are very grateful to have wonderful land owners and are thankful to Deon and Shana Iverson for their hospitality. We can't thank them enough for sharing their land with us. We enjoyed a weekend in Sun River Montana at an AKC Field Trial if it is any indication of the season to come our hard work has paid off. Ray Dohse Eshod Farm We are fortunate to have the opportunity to train and enjoy all the interesting breeds that accompanied us ; Shorthairs, Pointers, Brittany's, Wirehairs, Viszlas, Irish Setters and English Setters all round out our string. We were blessed with the company of several good friends this summer. Joe Inderman, Grant Stan ill and Hiram Stan ill from Texas each spent most of a month with us. Kevin Temple (TX) and Jay Halloran (FL) stopped in for a quick visit. Shane Anderson, Jarrin Larsen and Josh Woodward from Williston ND joined us several times for training. Lot's of good dog work off horseback was accomplished. We saw plenty of sharptail and pheasant, huns seemed to be down from last year. We supplemented our bird work with liberated chuckars. Note: All trainers are encouraged to submit reports from their summer and/or winter training camps. Everyone appreciates knowing what s going on during our down me at your camp.
