If you re interested in history and early cultures, Thailand offers more ruins, temples and deserted cities than any other South-East Asian Country Thailand is known as the land of smiles, and with good reason. From the powdery sand of its southern beaches to its fertile central rice lands and the mountains of the north, this is a country where there is still much to discover. There are vibrant modern cities where you will find Buddhist temples hazed with incense smoke and lit by candles. Lapping the shore are the sparkling warm blue waters of the Andaman Sea. Known as the Pearl of the Andaman, Phuket derived much of its former glory and its enormous wealth from tin production, which on the island dates back over 500 years. The town is interesting for its surviving examples of old Sino-Portuguese architecture, reminders of the island s long and fascinating history, and also for its shopping and entertainment possibilities. Today, Phuket is a major tourist attraction in Thailand. The surrounding waters contain an exquisite variety of marine life. It is a very attractive island for sightseeing, with lovely seashores and forested hillsides. Located off the southwest coast, just an hour s flight from Bangkok, Phuket is linked to the mainland by a causeway and is thus accessible by road as well as by air and sea. Besides sun, sea and sand, Phuket is a multifaceted destination and offers ample scope for exploring what is a fascinating island. Some rise sheer from the water, others are humped or jagged, and all are strange and hauntingly beautiful. A fishing village built entirely on stilts over the sea; and a mangrove-shrouded river estuary, all add to Phang Nga s stunning vistas. Further away are the Similan islands, which lie to the north of Phuket and are especially popular with scuba divers. It is Thailand s second largest city, though only one fortieth the size of the capital and quite unlike it in most other respects. Of great antiquity and shaped by a distinct history, Chiang Mai is a most attractive destination with sights and charms peculiar to itself and the picturesque Northern region of which it is the centre. Located 700 kilometres north of Bangkok, Chiang Mai is less than an hour from the capital by plane and is served by several daily flights. It can also be reached conveniently by airconditioned overnight train or coach. Chiang Mai is a city built on the roots of a traditional heritage that dig deep into the soil of time. It is a city with an ancient cultural personality of its own that has been blessed with beauty in nature. The people themselves are a memorable part of Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of silk, silver and wood are timeless souvenirs for visitors from all over the globe. Along with all this, a wide variety of accommodation, restaurants and entertainment all help to make Chiang Mai one of Thailand s prime tourist attractions. Within the city s original perimeter, still marked by fortified gates, are numerous ancient Buddhist temples and other monuments attesting to a distinguished past. Wat Prathat Doi Suthep is the biggest of Chiang Mai s tourist attractions and lays 16 kilometres north-west of town. Leading up to the temple is a 300-step staircase with sinuous dragons as the side railing. The temple, in its scenic location, is important both historically and architecturally. A short drive will take you to Phu Ping Palace, the winter palace of the Thai Royal Family. The gardens of the palace are open to the public during weekends and holidays. The hills of Chiang Mai beckon travellers looking for tranquillity. It is only in the hills, surrounded by the forest that acts as a buffer between you and the hectic city life, that true peace is possible. This mountain gateway is also a convenient jumping-off point for treks, hill resorts, river rafting and scenic nature trails. The best time to visit Chiang Mai is from November to February, which is the cool season. The hottest month is April and wettest is September. 23
