Mellow College Statement and Statistics LaGuardia Community College's students, faculty and staff have demonstrated the courage to question, the drive to experiment and the will to change, every day, inside and outside the classroom, since Our mission, then, as now, reflects our original charge handed down to us from CUNY: to open the doors of higher education to all, ensuring access to underserved and underprepared populations. Today, more than 50,000 students who hail from 164 countries, and speak 128 languages are enrolled at LaGuardia. The college offers 56 associate degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business and computer science and allied health, as well as four certificate programs. LaGuardia graduates transfer to four-year colleges at triple the national rate, and family income increases an average of 17 percent upon graduation. Fifty-four percent of our faculty hold Ph.D.s, more than twice that of faculty at most community colleges. The college's Adult and Continuing Education Division (ACE) is the largest in CUNY and among the larger in the country. ACE's award-winning ESL instructors, GED-to-college bridge programs and immigrant retraining and health practitioner licensure courses provide a pathway for adult learners to change their lives and that of their families for the better. As the first community college chosen in 2010 by Goldman Sachs to participate in 10,000 Small Businesses, a five-year initiative developed to help small businesses across the United States grow and create jobs, LaGuardia has helped 82 businesses create 194 new jobs, secure 15 loans totaling $3.9 million and negotiate 82 new contracts totaling $39 million. Other recent college accolades include recognition in 2009 by Excelencia in Education for exemplary leadership in serving the needs of Latino and nontraditional-age students. In 2006, the MetLife Foundation named LaGuardia one of two Community Colleges of Excellence in the United States. Since 2007, the college's innovative eportfolio program -- cited for excellence by the Carnegie Foundation and the Association of American Colleges and Universities in has received more than $4 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Education to teach two- and four-year institutions nationwide how to introduce eportfolio into their curricula. The college has been a winner of CUNY's Sustainability Award for environmentally friendly best practices on campus since its inception in LaGuardia continues to seek innovative solutions to such issues as improving retention and graduation rates, designing creative pedagogies that will lift students' basic skills pass rates, expanding academic advising services and utilizing technology to ensure a seamless transfer experience, whether within CUNY or to other four-year colleges and universities. Enrollment in degree programs has soared almost 30 percent in the last five years, necessitating leasing space in the B Building, previously occupied by DeVry University. To meet rising enrollment, two more elevators were installed in the C Building, a new bursar and admissions office was completed last year, and an expansion of the library is ready for construction. In 2014, replacement of the facade and windows of the C Building, the largest building in the CUNY system, will begin. Upgrades will include new fire alarm systems, installation of vertical risers for electrical and air ducts and installation of vertical circulation to support the renovation of the vacant eighth floor. The renovated floor will house the English and Communications Skills Departments and a multi-purpose conference center. Included will be the construction of 17 new classrooms to help address the college's pressing need for additional instructional space. Open lounges with natural light and views of Manhattan will encourage student and faculty interaction. January 2020 (B) Chillers Replacement in Shenker Hall Joseph Shenker Hall has three chillers, two of which are beyong their useful life and for which service and repair parts are no longer available. The chillers are critical components of the HVAC systems and are needed to maintain environmental control and comfort in the building. This project will replace the two chillers with energy-efficient, environmentally friendly chillers. January 2016 (B) Façade Upgrades to E Building and Shenker Hall This project will address New York City's Local Law 11 issues on the facades of E Building and Joseph Shenker Hall. The facades are exhibiting signs of stress through fissure cracks, spalling, cracking at window jambs and visible efflorescence. The control joints have exceeded their lifespans and are separating from the brick masonry. Timely facade repairs are critical to maintaining the integrity of the buildings. This project will remove deteriorated sealant, install new backer rods and repoint joints in Joseph Shenker Hall and replace the cracking composite building panel in the E Building. The single-pane windows in Joseph Shenker Hall will be replaced with double glazed, energy-efficient windows. 5 (B) HVAC Upgrades in Shenker Hall This project will replace HVAC systems in Shenker Hall that were originally installed in Their poor condition was documented in the college's recent Master Plan as well as various conditions assessment surveys. Shenker Hall is served by two large air handlers and three smaller units. All of the original variable air volume (VAV) boxes and controls for the building are inoperable and as a result, the system is running on manual mode, with VAV boxes fixed at the fully open position. This project will replace the five air handling units with variable flow drives, replace the existing VAV boxes, install a new building automation system and upgrade the air distribution system to provide adequate/balanced ventilation and conditioned air to all VAV boxes. November 2017 City Reso-A Requests FY 2015 (City Council and Borough Presidents) (Costs in thousands) Faculty Offices and Customized Training Center This project will address the shortage of faculty offices, as noted in the college's Master Plan, by building faculty offices in a vacant section of the ninth floor of the C Building. Also, the project will construct a customized training space that will deliver high-quality business training programs. The project will convert approximately 10,000 square feet of raw space into 40 faculty offices, a reception area, a support/copy space and four to five large classrooms with advanced audio-visual equipment. A mechanical room and restrooms will be installed to support the new facilities. May 2017 Fire Alarm Replacement in Shenker Hall This project will install a code-compliant and state-of-the-art fire alarm system in Joseph Shenker Hall. It will replace the outdated fire alarm system for which parts are increasingly difficult to obtain; soon the existing system will be beyond repair and will cease to function. DCE DC $5,000 $3,000 September 2016 Boilers Replacement in Joseph Shenker Hall Of the three boilers in Shenker Hall, two boilers rated 250 hp and 150 hp were installed in 1965, and the third, rated 150 hp, was installed in They have reached the end of their useful lives. The boilers burn inefficient No. 4-type oil and generate domestic hot water by means of submerged coils, which is likewise inefficient. This project will install two gas-fired steam boilers rated at 250 hp and two gas-fired condensing boilers for domestic hot water use. These boilers will be equipped with modern automatic controls for efficient operation, and the ventilation system will be improved.
