3 HEYDAR ALIYEV INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT The airport is located 20 km northeast of Baku, connected to the city by a modern highway. It is the busiest airport in Azerbaijan and of the Caucasus. The airport serves as the home base for flag carrier Azerbaijan Airlines. 4 ATESHGAH FIRE TEMPLE THE PENTAGONAL COMPLEX, WHICH HAS A COURTYARD SURROUNDED BY CELLS FOR MONKS AND A TETRA PILLAR-ALTAR IN THE MIDDLE, WAS BUILT DURING THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES. THE BAKU ATESHGAH WAS A PILGRIMAGE AND PHILOSOPHICAL CENTRE OF ZOROASTRIANS FROM NORTH-WESTERN INDIAN SUBCONTINENT, WHO WERE INVOLVED IN TRADE WITH THE CASPIAN AREA VIA THE FAMOUS "GRAND TRUNK ROAD". THE FOUR HOLY ELEMENTS OF THEIR BELIEF WERE: ATESHI (FIRE), BADI (AIR), ABI (WATER), AND HEKI (EARTH). GOBUSTAN NATIONAL PARK IS A HILL AND MOUNTAIN SITE OCCUPYING THE SOUTHEAST END OF THE GREATER CAUCASUS MOUNTAIN RIDGE IN AZERBAIJAN, MAINLY IN THE BASIN OF JEYRANKECHMAZ RIVER, BETWEEN THE RIVERS PIRSAGAT AND SUMGAIT. IT IS LOCATED WEST OF THE SETTLEMENT OF GOBUSTAN, ABOUT 40 MILES (64 KM) SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTRE OF BAKU ON THE WEST BANK OF THE CASPIAN SEA. MUD VOLCANOES OVER A THOUSAND MUD VOLCANOES ARE KNOWN TO EXIST IN THE WORLD, AND SOME 400 OF THOSE ARE IN THE COASTAL AREA OF AZERBAIJAN. YANAR DAG YANAR DAG FLAME BURNS FAIRLY STEADILY, AS IT INVOLVES A STEADY SEEP OF GAS FROM THE SUBSURFACE. IT IS CLAIMED THAT THE YANAR DAG FLAME WAS ONLY NOTED WHEN ACCIDENTALLY LIT BY A SHEPHERD IN THE 1950S. 4
