3 IN THE NEWS: The Okeechobee County Commission on Thursday, July 9, 2015, voted 4-0 in favor of allowing Guy Harvey's resort chain to transform a county-owned recreational area into a vacation destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts & Lodges and Elite Resort Managers LLC plan to invest $19.5 million to convert the Okee-Tantie Recreation area on Lake Okeechobee into a popular vacation spot. The plan calls for epanding the county s marina, renovating its restaurant and adding a tiki bar. The project would also include a club lodge, new boat docks, beach lagoon area, a pool and a splash pad. Accommodations would include 60 cabins, 370 RV pads and an eco-tent camping area. (Allen Eyestone / The Palm Beach Post) The county will now begin negotiating the terms of an agreement to lease the recreational area to two resort companies, according to a spokesman for Guy Harvey Outpost. Distance from Okeechobee Plaza to Okee-Tantie, the proposed site for Guy Harvey's Resort is 5.8 miles.
