1 Transport and Tourism 201 Accommodation statistics 201, October Nights spent by non-resident tourists up by 12.3 per cent in October 201 Nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments continued to grow, by 12.3 per cent from last year and nearly 35,000 nights were recorded for them in October 201. The number of nights spent by resident tourists remained on level with last year; up by just 0.3 per cent and totalled good 1.1 million overnight stays. A total of nearly 1.5 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in October 201, which was 2.9 per cent more than one year earlier. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection. Change in overnight stays in October 201/201, % Russia, Sweden and Germany the biggest countries of inbound tourism to Finland in October. The top three continued strong in October, only the order changes. Russians were the largest group of foreign tourists with their 39,000 overnight stays. Their overnight stays increased by 13.8 per cent from the year before. Swedes were the second biggest group and 3,000 overnight stays were recorded for them at Finnish accommodation establishments, which was 1.4 per cent more than one year before. German tourists came third with good 28,000 overnight stays. Over 15,000 overnight stays were recorded for visitors from the United States and Estonia. Overnight stays by tourists from the United States increased by 10 per cent while those by Estonian tourists grew by just 0. per cent compared with October 201. Norwegians stayed nearly 12,000 nights at accommodation establishments, which was 4.3 per cent more than last year. By region, the total number of overnight stays increased most in October in the regions of Kymenlaakso, up by 28.4 per cent, and Åland, up by 25. per cent. Overnight stays increased by 13.5 per cent in Satakunta and by 8.4 per cent in Lapland. In contrast, the total number of overnight stays decreased in Päijät-Häme, Etelä-Savo and Kainuu, by around eight per cent in each. In the whole country, overnight stays increased by 2.9 per cent from October 201. Change in overnight stays in October by region 201/201, % Hotel stays increased by 3.8 per cent in October year-on-year In October 201, the total number of nights spent in hotels was 1.3 million, which was 3.8 per cent more than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 10. per cent and hotels recorded good 320,000 of them. Nearly one million hotel stays were recorded for resident visitors, which was 1. per cent more than twelve months earlier. The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 53.1 per cent in October. One year earlier, it was 52.0 per cent. Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Uusimaa, 8.8 per cent, and Kymenlaakso, 0. per cent. In Vantaa, the hotel room occupancy rate was 5.3 per cent and in Kouvola, 8.9 per cent. The hotel room occupancy rate in Helsinki was 3.4 per cent. This was 4.9 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year earlier. Nearly 13 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 5.4 million overnight stays for non-resident tourists. The overnight stays of resident visitors increased by 1.3 per cent and those of non-resident visitors by 14.5 per cent from the previous year's January to October. The number of nights spent by Russian visitors at accommodation establishments in Finland totalled close on 9,000 in January to October 201, which was 1.5 per cent up on the respective period of last year. They were the biggest country of inbound tourism to Finland. Germans came second with 54,000 overnight stays. The number was 14.1 per cent higher than in January to October 201. Swedes came third with 531,000 nights spent. The figure increased by. per cent from the corresponding period of last year. British visitors came next with good 359,000 overnight stays. Their overnight stays at accommodation establishments increased by 23.2 per cent. Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments by visitors from all the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland increased in January to October 201. Nights spent by Chinese visitors rose most and their number of stays went up to nearly 2,000, which was 35.4 per cent more than in the corresponding period in 201. In addition to Chinese tourists, over 200,000 overnight stays were recorded for visitors from the United States, France and Japan, for whom 12 to 15 per cent more overnight stays were recorded than in January to October 201. In addition to the above-mentioned, overnight stays by Dutch and Spanish tourists also increased strongly in January to October. Overnight stays by Dutch tourists grew by 2.9 per cent and accommodation establishments recorded nearly 19,000 of them. Overnight stays recorded for Spanish visitors numbered 114,000, which was 1.5 per cent more than in January to October
