2 THAILAND Bangkok Hua Hin When to go Thailand s weather is warm year-round with two distinct seasons: hot or rainy. The peak tourist season and best time to visit is November through to February when it rains the least and temperatures are slightly cooler; this is also the main season for many festivals. Songkran is a great time to visit where throughout the country on the 13th of April they celebrate the Thai New Year. This holiday is known for its water festival, so if the world s largest water fight is on your bucket list, be sure to check this out! For a more sedate and peaceful scene, consider visiting nearby beaches including Surin, Mai Khao, Nai Ham or taking a trip out to breathtaking Phang Nga Bay, where a series of spectacular limestone islands jut out of the water. Where to Stay Phuket s accommodation tends to sell out quickly during their high season (January through March) and HK public holidays, so it s best to book well in advance if you want to get the best deal. Look out for batik a traditional Thai cloth typically used to make bright sarongs and bags. For something one of a kind, try your luck at the local-frequented Phuket Weekend Market (Naka Market), or the more laid-back Phuket Indy Market, held Thursday and Friday nights in Phuket Town. Phuket like a Local Given that Phuket s weather is so inviting, it s tempting to spend most of your time relaxing on the beach. If you do want to scratch beneath the surface, however, don t miss a visit to Phuket Town. A glimpse into what Phuket was like before the t-shirt vendors and girly bars came along, Phuket Town buzzes with non-touristy markets, local frequented restaurants and copious amounts of Sino-Portuguese architecture. Despite its development, especially along its western shores, Phuket retains a substantial amount of untouched rainforest and wilderness. The best-known national park is Khao Phra Thaew, home to two lovely waterfalls, Bang Pae and Ton Sae, as well as walking trails and wildlife. 11 Krabi Krabi Krabi Town is the gateway to the tropical delights that the southern Thailand province of Krabi is known for, namely picturepostcard beaches, exotic adventure islands and lush national parks. Spend your time here feasting on delicious flavours, visiting the cultural sites and hanging out down by the river, where relaxation is mandatory and charming views reign supreme. Explore Hop in a traditional long-tail boat and travel for around 15 minutes to the iconic limestone karsts of Khao Kanab Nam. Rising 100 metres out of the water, these natural formations are a spectacular sight. Don t miss your chance to explore the caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites and, if you re feeling fit, climb the steps all the way to the top of one of the mountains. Art lovers will enjoy a pleasant stroll around Krabi Contemporary Art Museum. The intimate museum showcases an excellent range of contemporary Thai and international art. The Maharaj Market, also known as the Morning Market because it kicks off at around 4am, sells fresh fruit and vegetables, exotic produce, fish, meat and ready-made meals at bargain prices. Find a spot to eat breakfast amidst the morning bustle and enjoy an excellent insight into everyday Thai life. The best time to arrive is between 7am and 8am, which is when the market hits its peak.
