6 Hotel Synopsis: COMO Uma Canggu In Febuary 2018, the name behind private island resorts like COMO Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos, and adventure retreats like COMO Uma Ubud in Bali and COMO Uma, Bhutan opened COMO Uma Canggu. This new resort sits at the edge of the sand in Canggu, with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean s rolling waves and some impressive rocks, named Batu Mejan ( batu means rock and mejan means very big in Balinese we also named a suite after this rock formation). Canggu is a coastal region located on the southern coast of Bali, Indonesia. The area, approximately 10 kilometres north of the bustling Kuta district, has a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can enjoy many dining experiences and cultural activities. Canggu is also renowned for its undulating rice paddies and challenging surfing beaches. 9 Key Biographies: COMO Uma Canggu, Bali Javier Beneyto, General Manager: Born in Madrid, Javier Beneyto began his career at the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Hotel, while studying hotel management at universities in Spain and Germany. Since graduating he has held managerial positions at hotels across Europe and the Caribbean, including the Sirenis Cocotal Beach Resort in the Dominican Republic. Beneyto joined in 2012 as acting general manager of COMO Cocoa Island in the Maldives before filling the same role in London, first at COMO The Halkin then COMO Metropolitan London. He then moved to the United States as general manager of COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach, before relocating to Bali to oversee the launch of COMO Uma Canggu. Dwayne Cheer, Executive Chef: New Zealander Dwayne Cheer graduated with a certificate in catering from the Universal College of Learning in Cheer has worked extensively in Europe and the Middle East, with stints in London, St Tropez, Italy, Spain and Dubai, where he was head chef at At.mosphere, the highest restaurant in the world. He came to Bali in 2012, where he has since cooked for legendary chefs Heston Blumenthal and Yannick Alléno amongst others. Cheer joined COMO Uma Canggu in June 2017, where he helped develop the concept and menus for COMO Beach Club s opening in February Trevor Hillier, Landscape Architect: Trevor Hillier is a landscape architect specialising in tropical South East Asian climates. He is currently working out of Bali. His work shows a keen sensitivity to conservation, architecture and context, and his designs incorporate agriculture into the landscape wherever possible. Hillier has also worked on resort projects at the Four Seasons in Bali, and COMO Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos. Koichiro Ikebuchi, Interior Architect: Japanese interior architect Koichiro Ikebuchi is defined by his sensitive approach to nature and a deep respect for cultural authenticity. He aims to create interiors which are entirely appropriate to their physical context. His designs are uncomplicated and succinct, but nevertheless beautiful. Past projects have included Aoki restaurant in Singapore, and COMO Uma Ubud in Bali Paola Navone, Interior Designer: Milan-based designer Paola Navone has been at the forefront of world-class interiors for over 30 years, as well as designing products for numerous leading brands, including Driade, Gervasoni, Guzzini, Poliform and Armani Casa. 11 Destination Overview : COMO Uma Canggu, Bali Bali is considered to be the jewel of Indonesia the original paradise cliché filled with smiling faces, white-sand beaches and unspoilt, rolling countryside carpeted in velvet green fields of rice paddies. It is all of this, but more as well, its manifold layers created by a long-standing, sophisticated culture informed by a deep sense of religion and respect for tradition. The less visited north and west of Bali includes a quiet coastline that s ideal for diving. Most significant to its extraordinary culture is the fact Bali stands as the only predominantly Hindu island in the world s largest Muslim nation Indonesia. Hinduism was introduced from Java in the eighth century and then strengthened in the 15th century as the Brahman priests fled the Islamic encroachment on Java. From these early roots, Bali has developed its own unique system of beliefs, officially called 'Agama Tirtha' (literally, Religion of Holy Water ). Balinese people believe in the seen and the unseen worlds. Life is a battle between the demons and dark forces that dwell in the sea and the gods who reside in the mountains, or the volcanoes, which are such a dominant feature of the island s topography. Village life is a core element of Balinese culture a cohesive religious community ( banjar ) organised around a group of temples. Each banjar member is duty-bound to take part in rituals and assist in ceremonies, involving art, music, theatre and elaborate offerings. These ceremonies constitute the island s heartbeat. Indeed, the very soul of Bali is rooted in religion and is expressed in art forms that have been well preserved over the centuries. Hindu tenets have also morphed with local influences. Dance dramas, for example, are based on the old Hindu epics of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, but contain elements of folklore peculiar to the island. Although the ancient regencies of the Rajas and princes of Bali were dismantled by colonial governments in the early 20th century, many of the royal descendants, who still own traditional palaces, are very much respected as patrons of the arts. Even today, it seems that almost every person is a painter, carpenter or weaver, with beauty found in the smallest decorations made for the myriad shrines found across the island, from temple shrines to paddy fields.
