The Maldives are the epitome of hideaway luxury and tropical bliss a nation of low-lying coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, just north of the equator and southwest of the Indian peninsula. Stretching for more than 800 kilometres from north to south and covering a total area of about 90,000 square kilometres, the Maldivian archipelago consists of 26 natural atolls with 1,190 islands boasting pristine white sand beaches lapped by idyllic turquoise lagoons.
