5 The event will focus on how the exploitation of thermal springs can contribute to sustainable regional development. It will present the capacity of Sterea Ellada s water thermal resources (156 springs), it will give examples of significant projects financed by European funds in the current programming period and will examine the possibilities to use the European funds in the next programming period in order to develop the potential of the energetic, touristic and healthy means of thermal springs. The speakers will present the regional and local priorities related to the valorisation of thermal springs. Moreover, they will analyse best practices and will discuss the contribution of thermal springs to sustainable local development and to the economic and social European cohesion. In addition, experts will examine the contribution of thermal springs in the current economic situation of the region and will propose actions to develop the interregional territorial cooperation in order to maximise the benefits of the thermal springs. The participants will have the possibility to contribute to the dialogue of the panel by exchanging ideas for the significant role of the use of thermal springs in regional and local development and the future European challenges in line with Europe 2020 strategy. The event will be attended by political representatives from the national, regional and local authorities, researchers from universities, scientific experts, policy experts, officers from the region. The Region of Attica chose to promote this year's priority theme, Challenges and Solutions of OPEN DAYS 2013, organizing a One-Day Conference on the subject of Climate Change: Environmental and Health Impacts - Knowledge Integration and Implementation of Adaptation Policy in Local Government. During the above-mentioned one-day conference, the following topics will be discussed: a) The magnitude and effects of Climate Change on both the environment and health, at global and local levels b) Evaluating the options available for addressing Climate Change at local and state levels c) Programmes and actions to mitigate climate change and adapt to it d) Best practice examples in other Member States 7

8 The ultimate goal of this initiative is to inform the participants and raise awareness of the above-mentioned matters, and discuss the implementation of management policies, exchanging best practices. This initiative aims to: a) Gather around the same table major Greek and European bodies working to combat the negative effects of climate change on the environment and health, providing information and decision making tools. b) Promote, through meaningful discussion, the exchange of views and concerns, the establishment of partnerships and initiatives that will contribute significantly to addressing the effects of global Climate Change, reduce one s carbon footprint in public administration areas, and highlight the consequent socioeconomic benefits. At the same time, Four (4) Training Workshops will take place at the University of Athens (Vocational Education and Training - VET). Their subject will be Addressing Climate Change - Think Globally, Act Locally!, and they will be attended by employees of Local Government. These Workshops will aim to: - Provide information, through anthropocentric sources, on the contribution of greenhouse gases to climate change and raise awareness of the effects observed on the Environment and Health. What are the causes of climate change? - Provide information on the adoption of best practices for climate change adaptation and mitigation. How can we adapt to climate change and reduce the effects of this phenomenon by adopting sustainable development? Investing on green products, technologies and services, making our day-to-day life more eco-friendly, conserving energy, promoting the use of renewable energy sources and helping conserve natural ecosystems. - Implement the existing knowledge regarding the management of climate change impacts in the workplace Be the example! Take your share of responsibility in order to reduce your own carbon footprint! - Provide training on adaptation measures aiming to reduce, avoid or delay the effects of climate change on the Environment & Health. Attendance to the Workshop is imperative for the employees of all Directorates involved in addressing the effects of climate change, such as: - Directorate for Public Health and Social Care - Environment Directorate - Directorate for Environmental Hygiene and Health Control - Independent Civil Protection Directorate - Directorate for Rural Economy and Veterinary Medicine - Directorate for Citizen Services and Organization Representatives of Central Administration, Elected Members of Local and Regional Authorities, Partners (Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change) / Greek Biotope- Wetland Centre (EKBY), Postgraduate Students who attend the Environment and Health: Capacity Building for Decision Making Master's Degree Programme, Professionals, Employees in the Region of Attica, NGOs. 8

It will safeguard the adequate dissemination of the project s results, which are by this time anticipated by the EU. The Greek partners of the project will have the political support towards the finalization of the project, overcoming any uprising difficulties. Additionally, the rationale of the project will be explicitly known to the policy makers and they can play in turn a very important role while promoting and evaluating the results in political level, regionally and nationally for sure and may pose a good starting point to influence e-health policy making in European level. The Prefecture, as the official Greek Authority representative, seems to be quite interested in this potential and is expecting to gain positive feedback from this one-day event. 12 CBC EL/IT Greece - Italy (European Cooperation Day) "The Sea that unites us" Municipality of Corfu 14 September 2013 Organisers: ETCP Greece-Italy The ETCP Greece-Italy participates in the celebration of European Cooperation Day 2013, with the event The Sea that unites us, a title that follows the slogans utilized for the communication of the Programme: The projects that unite us and The messages that unite us (EC DAY event 2012). The event, having a symbolic meaning, refers to exchanging small boats loaded with the gift of cooperation, bearing the EU emblem with a reference to co-financing by the ERDF, the flags of Greece and Italy, and the EC Day logo. In this context, paper boats (waterproof and recyclable), which will be made by those who participate in the implementation of the Programme, symbolizing their contribution and by kids sailing optimists, will be left to sail in the sea area between Greece and Italy, the natural border that unites the two countries. The event will take place on Saturday, 14 September 2013, in the Ionian Islands Region - Greece (Corfu) and in the Apulia Region Italy as well.
