4 Question Format Reminders Most questions and answers were taken from the book Hellenika by T. Peter Limber All questions are in the form of multiple-choice (4 choices) All decisions regarding validity of tournament answers have already been made and are final There are no provisions for challenging these decisions and no resources for evaluating the challenges Using traditional designations of years (BC/AD) vs. recently adopted designations (BCE/CE) Short names for the three broad historical periods used in the tournament: 1. Mycenaean through Hellenistic (1500 BC to 30 BC) = Ancient 2. Roman and Byzantine (29 BC to 1453 AD) = Middle 3. Ottoman and Modern (1454 AD to the present) = Modern Timeline: Each question starts with a year or approximate year. Use this information! e.g AD. Which Sultan conquered Cyprus from the Venetians? c. 240 BC. Who was the first person ever to calculate the circumference of the Earth with some accuracy? Naming conventions: 1. For periods 1 and 2 (through 1453 AD), the names of persons and places are those that are standard in an English-speaking history course. Non-standard transliterations from the Greek are NOT used. Examples: Athens is OK, Athinai is not; Socrates is OK, Sokratis is not; Pericles is OK, Periklis is not, Constantine is OK, Konstantinos is not; etc. 2. For period 3 (1454 AD to the present), Modern Greek transliterations into English are preferred. Examples: Theodoros Kolokotronis is preferred to Theodore Colocotrones; Konstantinos Karamanlis is preferred to Constantine Caramanles, etc.

5 Computerized Match Guide

6 Match Timing Questions / match 24 (4 additional pairs of questions {8} as tie breakers) Minutes / question 1 (seconds / question = 60) Question minutes / match 24 Transition minutes / match 21 (time to move to next match & set up) Total minutes per match 45 (also per round of simultaneous matches) Number of teams 16 Number of matches 15 (8 in Round 1, 4 in R02, 2 in R03, 1 in R04) Number of rounds 4 Total tournament minutes 180 (4 rounds x 45 minutes per round) Total tournament hours 3 (180 minutes / (60 minutes/hour)) Match Rules Match Rules 1. Due to the limited size of the classrooms, competing students, parents and chaperones get priority in that order for a given match. The moderators will make final decision 2. Overflow audiences should watch the matches in the Hall 3. After a match starts, nobody should enter or leave the room until the match ends 4. Answers should be given within a few seconds no time to reflect 5. Moderators should just read the questions and record the answers; they should NOT interact with the competitors in any other way 6. In addition to keeping backup score, the Scorekeeper should ensure that members of the audience DO NOT interact with the students competing in the match 7. In the event of a dispute, the Scorekeeper will summon the Dispute Resolution Advisor (Greg Stamos) Only the team captain is empowered to speak on behalf of the team no parents please! 8. At the end of each match, the Scorekeeper must report the results of the match to the designated control point in the main hall.
