2 DESTINATION ITALY We have designed a tour that starts in the beautiful Almafi Coast and then continues through Sicily. Sicily is an autonomous region of. Of all the regions of, Sicily covers the largest land area at 25,708 km² and currently has just over five million inhabitants. It is also the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Throughout much of its history, Sicily has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its importance for Mediterranean trade routes. The area was highly regarded as part of Magna Graecia, with Cicero describing Siracusa which is included in the tour - as the greatest and most beautiful city of all Ancient Greece. Sicily is considered to be highly rich in its own unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, cuisine, architecture and language. The Sicilian economy is largely based on agriculture (mainly orange and lemon orchards); this same rural countryside has attracted significant tourism in the modern age as its natural beauty is highly regarded. Sicily also holds importance for the archeological and ancient sites that we will visit. 2

Day 2 Arrive in Rome Meet Kingsway International tour manager Transfer to Naples Arrive at the hotel for check in Overnight in Naples area Day 3 Breakfast daily After breakfast we have a walking tour of Naples. Walk through the ancient Greek centre which is protected by UNESCO. See the impressive main cathedral, S. Gregorio Armeno Street, Spaccanapoli, and S.Chiara Monastery Travel to Pompeii to see the archaelogical site. Visit the forum and its majestic temples and visit the main street flanked by different kinds of shops, thermal baths, patrician dwellings embellished with wall-paintings and mosaic floors, as well the striking plaster-casts of human bodies, victims of the tragic eruption of 79 A.D. Performance, perhaps Mass at the Pompeii Shrine Overnight in Naples area Day 4 Transfer to the port for the ferry boat crossing to Capri, an island famous since Roman times, and favorite vacation home of the emperor Tiberius. We visit La Piazzetta, Augustus Gardens and Villa Jouvis (the Emperor s residence) Late afternoon we return to Sorrento Performance Overnight in Sorento 5

6 PROGRAM Day 5 Today we travel to the Amalfi Coast one of the most spectacular, impressive stretches of land in the world. En route we stop at Positano to see the beautiful village from one of the panoramic terraces. Upon arrival we visit the town of Amalfi. Made up of a labyrinth of narrow lanes and alleyways that climb the surrounding hills, the town features typical mediterranean style architecture with houses piled one on top of the other. Here you can sample the local Limoncello drink or perhaps visit the celebrated Paradise Cloister built in Arabian style that dates back to the thirteenth century. Ferry to Palermo on board Day 6 Arrive Palermo. See the Palatine Chapel, built by the Normans, but decorated with Byzantine- and Islamicstyle mosaics Visit the Church of St. John of the Hermits built to look like a red-domed Mosque. The nearby Cathedral was built by the Normans, but every new ruling dynasty that arrived added their own style to it. Travel to Monreale where we visit the Norman Duomo (Cathedral) decorated on the inside with over 6,340 sq. meters (almost 70,000 sq. feet) of mosaics and 24-carat gold Overnight in Palermo 6

7 PROGRAM Day 7 Travel to Erice. Visit some churches located in the city centre and the Venere Castle Continue to Marsala, through the Salt Road. Visit Salt Pans and Windmils Arrive at Agrigento Visit the Temples Valley by night Overnight in Agrigento Day 8 Tour of Agrigento, the city that more than any other in Sicily has preserved the architecture and the ruins of the Greek period. It is spread out along the spectacular Valley of the Temples which slopes down from the modern Agrigento towards the sea Continue to Piazza Armerina for a guided visit of the Roman Villa del Casale which contains the most fascinating and colorful mosaics ever found of the late period of the Roman empire Travel to Taormina Peformance Overnight in Taormina 7

8 PROGRAM Day 9 Guided walking tour of Taormina. See the Greco Roman Theater, very near the town centre. Having a diameter of 109 metres, it is second only to the Theatre at Syracuse. The beauty of the place is set off by its great panoramic frame, marvellous for both its variety and its spread. It is certainly unique for the view it gives of Mount Etna Today we visit Mount Etna once called Mongibello after the Arab term ghebel, meaning mountain. Mount Etna is visible from most parts of Sicily.
