EMERGENCY CALL You can also contact the base by mobile phone: On-call from 8:30am to 8pm Kalamaki n Kos n Corfu n Skiathos n Lefkas n Syros n IN CASE OF A SERIOUS ACCIDENT The base must be informed of all accidents as soon as possible so they can notify the insurance company and take any necessary steps. CHARTER WITH SKIPPER The skipper is responsible for the yacht. The skipperassumes the technical control of the boat and will be held responsible for damage that may arise within the framework of his services, whether to the people present onboard, the boat itself, or to a third party. The book has to be returned at the end of the cruise. Should you wish to have a copy, the base will be happy to make one for you. THE RETURN INSPECTION A second inventory will be made using the first made on departure as a reference. A detailed technical verification will be made with an examination of the floor frame, keel bolts, motor fixtures, the propeller shaft and the hull. RETURN FEES For any loss or damage of equipment, you will be invoiced from your security deposit, up to 400 if you have taken out security insurance. CLAIMS If during your charter a technical problem or difficulty has occurred, and if this is due to something that we could be held responsible for, we ask you to make your claim to the person responsible at the base when you return. This will authorise you to assert your rights according to the contract. Important Note: We must ask you to leave the boat at 8 o clock the next morning as stated in your contract. 23

VI.4 Local Navigational Conditions HAZARDS We would like to draw your attention to two of the most frequent causes of accidents in our region: grounding and propeller fouling. - Running aground : Running aground is, unfortunately frequent and causes enormous damage: rupture of flooring and of partitions, water infiltration, injury to the crew and interruption of the cruise. The risk of running aground is even greater because of the beauty of the area, the absence of tides and an open coastline. It is easy to forget the primary rules of navigation. Read carefully and regularly the detail on the charts, the coastal guides and nautical instructions. Be careful and check systematically. If you have any doubts, (nautical charts, navigation ruler, handbearing compass, etc., are your tools) do not take the risk! Electronic instruments (sounder, GPS, etc.) are navigational aids but you must not rely on their information alone. Dead reckoning and human judgement are also necessary. Propeller fouling: This can also cause severe damage: the propeller shaft may become bent, the bracket may be bent or torn out, the engine can be torn off its mounting, the cutlass bearing may be damaged and a serious leak may occur. Before starting the engine, check that no ropes, painters or sheets are overhanging. When sailing with the engine, watch for nets and floating ropes or fishing equipment. If the engine suddenly stops, check that there is nothing caught around the propeller (98% of the time) before starting again and check that there is no leakage around the stuffing box. - Towing : In the Eastern Mediterranean, it frequently happens that the captain of a vessel that has taken another vessel (or a vessel that has been abandoned) into tow has the right to claim ownership or compensation for the towed boat. For a chartered yacht this means confiscation by the port authorities at the end of the cruise. To prevent any unpleasantness from being towed, always make sure you have enough fuel, to avoid going aground or damaging the propeller shaft. Do not be towed for a minor problem. Know that assistance at sea is an obligation and that the towage can be negotiated. If towage is really necessary for the safety of the crew and the boat, come to an agreement before a witness (use the VHF). Never take the other boat s towline, it is like handing your boat over to them. Instead, give your own towline and should they refuse, their intentions become obvious. Inform the base as soon as possible so they can take the necessary steps with the insurance company. PORTS AND MARINAS No reservation is possible in Greek ports. A passing through berth is generally available for the night. Your passage is not always recorded when passing through small ports. Port authorities will sometimes request the boat s papers and your charter contract. Do not forget to retrieve your documents before leaving. The average price for a night for a 40 footer: 7, in small habours and in private marina s BUOYING In all European waters, the International A system is used and not the B system that is used in American and Caribbean waters. Leaving the harbour, red beacons will be to Starboard and green beacons Port (the opposite to the B system). You will also find yellow and black beacons called Cardinals that do not exist in the B system. Do not hesitate to ask our base manager if you have any doubts. TIDES In the eastern Mediterranean, the tide range is very small: 30 cm to 60 cm (one to two feet) including the variation of level due to atmospheric pressure and dominant winds

WEATHER FORECAST When you arrive at the base, we will provide you with a weather forecast for the next 24 hours. The weather forecast during your cruise can be seen on all television channels: Tavernas and restaurants show weather programmes just after the news at 20:50 pm. Wind direction and speed is clearly indicated on a map. Harbour Offices receive a weather forecast regularly. A weather forecast is also available on the web at On your radio receiver. On the Greek national station, forecasts are broadcast in Greek and English Time Station Frequency Radio wave 6:30am Athens 729 khz 412 m 1:10pm Corfu 1008 khz 298 m 1:30pm Rhodes 1494 khz 200 m 12pm Patras 1485 khz 202 m The Italian station, Radio One announces forecasts for the Ionian Sea around 7:40am and 11:45 pm on 567, 657, 666, 675, 1032, and 1332 khz frequencies. East of the Greek archipelago the forecast is in German around 9:45 am and 2 pm on short wave on 6150 MHz/49 m frequency.on your VHF: It is possible to call HELLAS RADIO on channel 16 in English. You will be given the weather forecast for your zone after you give them your VHF code signal and the name of your boat. THE DOMINANT WINDS The Meltemi: Varying from 15 to 40 knots. It begins in May and reaches its peak in July, then slows down in September. In the north Aegean, it blows Northeast, turning to the north and becoming stronger in the centre of the Aegean Sea. More to the south it continues by veering to the west while weakening. The Ionian Islands have a Northwest wind, which is weak during the summer. As is often the case in the Mediterranean in the sum-mer, winds are strongly influenced by thermal phenomena which are accentuated by coastlines, the Leeward and channels. The Sirocco: Southeast More frequent in winter, it corresponds to the passage of a depression. It can occasionally blow in April or the end of October. RESTRICTED ZONES Albania: Starting from Corfu, navigation is only permitted in Greek territorial waters. There is a risk that you will be shot at if you approach the Albanian coast! DIVING Scuba diving on your own is strictly regulated in Greece: There are only about twenty zones where you are allowed to dive. The exact list of these areas is available at the Main Harbour office. In the authorised zones, diving is only permitted with the local Harbour Office s agreement or that of a registered diving club. Underwater fishing is forbidden when scuba diving. It is also forbidden to collect archaeological objects whether scuba diving or not. 25

VIII. RESPECT THE SEA The sea is our common heritage. We must make a maximum effort to preserve this environment for our own enjoyment, and for that of our children and for generations to come. RUBBISH Only rubbish that is completely and rapidly biodegradable can be released into the sea without risk. Nevertheless, avoid doing this near coasts. Everything else must be kept on board and thrown away in rubbish containers provided at ports. SEAWEED BEDS «POSIDONIES» Throughout the Mediterranean seaweed/algae beds are threatened or are regressing. Be careful not to anchor on these beds : fish reproduce there and these algae take more than a hundred years to establish themselves. To drop anchor in them is to pull them out when you moor and will damage the living sea. TOILETS In port, do not use the boat s toilet; always make use of the port s toilets. DIESEL Be careful when filling-up with diesel. Pay attention the entire time to avoid any overflow. -Used oil Normally, you won t have to change the motor oil. Moorings does it regularly for you, except in the case of a long duration charter when you would have used the motor for more than 100 hours. In this case, have a 5 litre empty tin ready for the used oil before beginning the operation. Never empty the used oil into the sea or into a drain. Most ports are equipped with special reservoirs to receive used oil. 30 X. Ports and Islands in the Cyclades AMORGOS: Anchorages are principally located on the north west coast. The bay of «Katapola» remains the best shelter on the island. Once again, we must encourage you to go inland to Chora, a typical Cycladian village, and to the monastery of Horoviotissa, which was featured in the film «Le Grand Bleu». ASTIPALEA: This island, lost between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, is a haven of tranquillity. The main anchorage (Skala) is tucked away at the foot of a magnificent fortress dating from the 13th century, encircled by a picturesque village (Chora). The main occupation is fishing. The island will seduce you with its authenticity. Astipalea also offers numerous other anchorages that are calm and untamed, such as Maltezana, Agrilithi, Vathy, Panormos or even Livadhia, immediately to the south of Skala. FOLEGANDROS: The bay of Karavostase on the isle of Folegandros is probably not what you expected, but push your curiosity to the limit and follow the unique route past arid lands for about three kilometres. There you will find a green haven perched on the edge of a cliff. You will also find several whitewashed houses, three small squares surrounded by several cafes, and a bakery that can be reached by taking a detour through a flowered passageway. IOS: The large bay of Ios shelters a village that was once very picturesque, but has become rather touristy. The bays of Kolitzani and Milopotamos, while being the same distance from the village «Chora», can be used instead of the principal port and have the advantage of being a lot more tranquil. Note: If you prefer sailing away from the crowds, a stopover in Manganari Bay, at the extreme south east of the island of Ios will allow you to discover a peaceful, white sandy beach, rare in the Aegean. This is a mythical place that sailors dream of finding, giving a marvelous spectacle where shapes and colours compete for attention. K EA : Kea is a mountainous island where water is abundant. It is also, despite the lack of anchorages, an agreeable stopover only a few miles from the continent. The principal port «Korissia» has the advantage of an anchorage at one of the quietest quays, while the bay «Aghios Nikolaos» allows a more rustic type mooring. Only a few houses are found around this large bay, one of the best shelters in the Cyclades against dominant winds. Do not miss visiting the medieval village «Chora» which is only kilometres away. A little further on, after the cemetery, you will find an immense (over 7 metres long), ancient bas-relief representing a lion. K ITHNOS: This island may seem rather austere in appearance, however, you will discover some lovely little anchorages a few miles from the principal port «Merikha» (subject to dominant winds). The sandy bays of «Fikiadha» and «Apokriossi» are the most welcoming. On the east coast of the island, we can recommend the bays «Aghios Stefanos» and «Aghios Ioannis». A trip to the typical village «Driopis» is sure to please. The charm of the area is only a taste of better things to come on your cruise. MILOS: You are, without a doubt, off the traditional tourist path because, even if the famous «Venus» de Milos is known universally, the island has remained practically unknown to sailors. On your way, you will pass by the islet of «Kimolos». Today, this islet is unpopulated, but until the 18th century it was the largest «bordello» in the Mediterranean. If you have a passion for this part of the world, we strongly advise you to read «Voyage of a Botanist» by Tournefort. This «spy» for Louis XV wrote this composition in two volumes during his voyages in the Aegean and Turkey. With this guide in hand, you will be surprised at the number of locations that have remained as he described them. Do not miss visiting the museum of traditional arts of the Cyclades in the heart of the village of Milos - five kilometres from the port «Adams. MYKONOS: Since most ancient times, Mykonos inhabitants have been renowned for their hospitality. The cultural development of «Delos» and its closeness have also contributed to this attitude, and more recently the Turkish and French presence has reinforced the cosmopolitan influence. Anchorages are limited on this arid island, swept by winds. We prefer the bay of «Ornos» to the south west of the island and only a few kilometres from the village, to the principal port. Mykonos is certainly one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades. Its «postcard» aspect often hides its authenticity behind its tourist displays. The contrast of the whitewashed buildings against the burnt earth and the profound blue of the sea add to the magic of the spectacle. At the beginning of the 19th century, because of the lack of vegetation, breadmaking was only allowed once a year. The ovens were heated until white and functioned for a month. PAROS: One of the most agreeable stops awaits you in the large bay of «Naoussa», to the north of the island of Paros. Chalk cliffs, plantations and palm trees, dotted about with white-walled monasteries and bordered by beaches of fine white sand, harmonise for your pleasure. The little fishing port at the back of the bay is one of the most picturesque and authentic despite its inaccessibility by boat. An hour s walk will be enough to take you on a visit to the «Moni Longovarda» monastery. The bays of «Aghios Ioannis» or «Langeri» are excellent shelters for the night from northern winds. RINIA: It may be that you are at the centre of the world without knowing it. This is what one lets the happy sailor arriving on the shores of «Delos» believe. Birth place of Apollo and foster mother to Artemis (born at Rinia), from the 7th century B.C. this island has had a political and religious development that has influenced all the Mediterranean basin. Because of its geographic posi- 29

tion, the island has been the envy of many. Anchorage in the channel and visiting the sites are regulated and we advise you to comply with these local contingencies. You have to leave the site of «Delos before 15:00 hrs. and we suggest that you moor in the excellent bay in the south of the island of «Rinia». For small yachts, a narrow creek opens just to the right of the entrance to the south bay. SERIFOS: As you approach the southern coast of the island of Serifos, you will be intrigued to see a white angle on the mountain side. This is the first surprise that the beautiful village of «Chora» offers you as it dominates the bay of «Livadhi». We advise you to visit «Chora» at the end of the afternoon for a visual feast. It will be a little cooler and you will appreciate the contrast of colours between the white houses and the cliff upon which they are built all the more. The bright environment of the Cyclades accentuates the tints and adds to the undescribable play on colours. A suggestion : Take the local bus up to the village and then return on foot at your own pace through the passages and pathways used by the villagers. SIFNOS:»Kamares» although the principal port in Sifnos, it has remained quiet and unpretentious. Starting from «Fikiadha», «Vathy», «Faros» and «Plati Yalos» find mule paths that will lead you to the very characteristic village of «Appolonia». If the weather is favourable, lunch at the foot of the unique village of «Kastro»on the east coast. SKINOUSSA: Let yourself be driven by favourable winds towards the discovery of the Aegean pearls called «Koufonisia» but also known as the Greek «Little Polynesia». This Archipelago that is little visited, and is from east to west a full of surprises. We do not wish to spoil your pleasure by revealing anything except that the bay of Myrsini on the island of Skinoussa is one of the best natural anchorages in the area. Just let your sailor s instinct guide you. SYROS: The marina in Finikas bay is the safest on Syros island. You can swim next to the yacht in transparent waters. The bay of Gramata in the NW is safe and nice for a quite overnight on an isolated beach. To the contrary the bay of Vari can offer you a nice dinner in a traditional taverna. The main port of Hermoupolis although very beautiful, sometimes is not very comfortable due to the swell brought by the ferries, or by strong north winds. THIRA (Santorin): Words hardly do justice in describing the beauty of the isle of Santorini (Thira ). Breath-taking... It is possible to climb the steep 300 metres to the village by foot, or on a donkey. There another scene awaits you. The small village of Ia to the north of Thira s volcanic crater is surprising for its troglodye architecture as well as its panoramic view of the archipelago. The only restriction here is that an active member of your crew must stay on board to adjust the mooring according to arrivals and departures of other boats. This is one mooring that can rapidly become a spider s web of lines. If the wind rises, it is certainly better to leave and anchor off the beach of Akrotiri, to the south. TINOS: Capital of the Greek Catholic community, Tinos is above all, during the Assumption Day holiday, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Greece. There the miraculous icon from the monastery of the Virgin (Panaghia) is carried through the streets. Inland, in the villages of «Purgos» or «Kardiani» curious architecture is trimmed with picturesque dove-cotes with geometric designs. The thing that has caused the most actions and reactions between Mykonos and Tinos fishermen is the Tinos Pelican - which is now part of the island s legend. The original pelican is long gone but has been replaced by another. Ports and Islands in the Dodecanese ARKI: Arki and Lipsos, some miles to the east of Patmos, there are numerous wild anchorages where you are likely to find yourself alone. A few fishermen pass from time to time during siesta time and take advantage by selling one or two «Sinagrida» (sea bream). Discover a lovely landscape in this archipelago in the dinghy FOURNI: In this archipelago with numerous, wonderful moorings, time seems to have stopped. Let yourself be soothed by the tranquillity of the place and the serenity of its habitants. When the Meltemi is blowing, it is better to moor at Kladaridhi or Marmaro, located to the south east of the channel between Fourni and Fimaina. GAÏDAROS: Head north for the heart of Greece. You will have no regrets when you discover the charm of this little islet lost between the sea and the sky. You may want to choose a mooring in one of the two little coves at the entrance to the bay Aghios Yiorgos, or perhaps at the back of the bay at the foot of the small fishing village. Hospitality and generosity are characteristics of the folk living in this magic spot. KALIMNOS: Kalimnos port is one of the most animated ports in the north Dodecanese Islands. It was, until fairly recently, the capital for sponge fishermen for the entire Mediterranean basin. Although this profession has more or less disappeared, it is still possible to find a few stalls or small shops that have sponges for sale

KHALKIS: From the moment you take the passage leading you to the port of Khalkis, each of the windows in this charming village seems to have an expression. This architecture, typical of the Dodecanese Islands (Dodeka = 12 & Nisis = islands) is delightfully simple. The bright colours of the boats of fishermen (Kaîkii or Varcoula) wonderfully contrast with the immaculate white of these villages. Finish the day with a walk to the old village that is abandoned today. The ruins of a fortified castle overlook it and the frescoes in the chapel of St. Nicholas seem to defy time. KOS: A welcome at our pier in the new Marina. A visit to Hippocrates town is a must. The town of Kos is an architectural mosaic composed of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Turkish, and more recently Italian remains. LEROS:An ideal descent towards the island of Leros with the wind behind. Hibiscus flowers, bouquets of jasmine, branches of bougainvillaea and September figs will decorate your dinner table with the exceptional setting of the green bay of «Platanos» as a background. If the Meltemi bothers you, choose the bay of «Lakki» and if solitude wins, push on with the wind to «Xerokambos» south of Leros. LINDOS:Although little known by holidaymakers, this island can give as much pleasure and emotion as more frequented shores. Swimming in the bay of Passos or Istros to the south west of the island is a possibility before arriving at the bay of Lindos. Here the cosmopolitan village is dominated by its acropolis and fortress with narrow streets that are animated. NISIROS: Nisiros is today an extinct volcano, but it s hot baths were much sought after for their therapeutic value until recently. A trip to the centre of the crater and the different villages located there is recommended. «Mandraki» is certainly the most beautiful of the island s anchorages, but it is also the most exposed to winds from the north. The port of «Palos» is better sheltered but not too good when the Meltemi is strong. About 3 miles from there, further north, the excellent bay to the south of the islet «Yali» remains the best anchorage in the area when weather conditions suit. PATMOS: You should not miss the «Chora» on Patmos, one of the high circles of the Orthodox religion. «Chora» is generally the name given by Greeks to indicate villages high up as opposed to «Skala» which are fishing hamlets around the ports. This «Chora» is built around one of the most beautiful, fortified monasteries in existance today in Greece. Is it true it was here St. John finished writing Apocalypse. Today, Patmos is the second spiritual centre of the Greek Orthodox Church after Mont Athos. An excursion to the monastery Aghios Yannis (St. John) is essential even if it is only to discover an exceptional view of the island. RHODES: Do not look for the Colossus, a deer and a stag in bronze, emblems of the island, have replaced it. The town of Rhodes is composed of two distinct parts: the new part that is of little interest and the old town that was entirely restored by the Italians after the war. The occupation by the Italians began in 1912 and ended in Mussolini s architectural influence everywhere is flagrant. Should you be tempted by a Turkish bath (Hammam), you will find it situated in the heart of the old town in a building that is also picturesque. Note: You may stop over at the ancient baths of Kalithéa before going on to Mandraki, the port of the largest island in the Dodecanese - Rhodes AMOS: Brief return to civilization with a visit to Sthe port of Pythagorion on the island of Samos. This village is constructed on the ancient site of Samos. An excellent dinner can complement this cultural visit to the island of Pythagore in one of the numerous tavernas. The port, called «Tigani» in days gone by because of its frying pan shape, is well sheltered from the Meltemi, although there is sometimes a swell after several windy days. SYMI: Your arrival in the port of Symi must take into account the surrounding light. Plan to pause in the impressive bay of Thessalona, a few miles further south, and do not enter this natural amphitheatre until late afternoon, when the sun accentuates the shadows and colours. If you prefer mooring, choose Port Pedhi where you are only twenty minutes away from the village on foot. In old times, Symi was one of the most wooded islands in the Aegean and had a reputation for the quality of its boat building. Today, vegetation is practically non-existent. You may also stop on the north west coast of Symi in the shelter of the monastery of Aghios Emilianos. TILOS: Head north to the heart of Greece. You will have no regrets when you discover the charm of this little islet lost between the sea and the sky. You may want to choose a mooring in one of the two little coves at the entrance to the bay Aghios Yiorgos, or perhaps at the back of the bay at the foot of the small fishing village. Hospitality and generosity are characteristics of the folk living in this magical spot. 31

Ports and Islands in the Ionian aerea ANTI PAXOS/PAXOS: If weather conditions are favourable, head towards «Anti Paxos» for the night. The few inhabitants there that cultivate vines and olive groves will arouse a certain envy in you because time seems to stand still in this garden of Eden. Land with your dinghy on one of the beautiful beaches snuggled up at the back of a creek and then visit inland. The choice of moorings at Paxos depends on your mood. Two nice ports, «Laka» and «Gayo» will have no trouble enticing you. However, if you prefer a calmer anchorage, continue on to the bay of «Spuzzo», not far south of «Gayo». ATAKOLO: A quick historic visit off the west Peloponnese coast. You are in Arcadia, the bay of «Navarin» in the heart of Greek tragedy, some 35 kms. from the most beautiful archaeological site in Greece - Olympia. We cannot recommend this stopover enough due to the exceptional sites and its environment. ITHACA:You will wonder, probably as Penelope did, why Ulysses would want to leave such a heavenly island. Ithaca is without doubt one of the most beautiful of the Greek isles. Olive groves and cypresses alternate from time to time with a little chapel or modest barn. After arriving in one of the many moorings off the east coast of the island, let yourself go and sample «butcher s blood», a red wine that is more black than red and a local tradition. Whether you choose «Vathy», dominated by the old village of «Perachori», «Kioni» or «Frikes», you will feel you are in another world. Wilder still is the fjord of «Aghios Andreas», on the south side of the island.. KEFALLONIA: There are so many things to see. The principal town of Kefallonia «Argostoli» which was entirely destroyed by an earthquake, is of little interest. Nearly all the moorings are to be found on the east coast of the island along the channel separating it from Ithaca. Our preferences are the bays of «Antisamos» or «Fiscardo» with its little port. The latter was the only to escape the earthquake in 1953 and is sought out more and more by Greeks. It is one of the nicest stops during your cruise. The west coast, which is not very hospitable, only has moorings that are usable during very good weather. A 16th century Venetian fortress overlooks «Assos», a small but pleasant port, and «Aghios Kiriakis» a large bay open to north winds at the back of a gulf of the same name. KERKYRA: Land of contradictions, Kerkyra is full of surprises. A characteristic Venetian architecture stands in contrast to the big Georgian buildings, bordered by English lawns. If there are not really any historic monuments of great interest on the island (perhaps, with the exception of the citadel), it is, rather, the general atmosphere emanating from the old town that gives it its charm. LEVKAS: Despite appearances, Levkas is an island and your cruise along a lost canal in the lagoon provides the proof. In this channel which is dredged often, do not take any risks and choose to sail by day, with the motor. Even though winds may sometimes be favourable, the water current is often strong and deceptive. The little village of Levkas, behind the port, deserves a visit. You will discover an architecture that is typical of the place. PETALAS: A change of scene and era. Welcome to the world of the fantastic. Your first impression will be that you have landed on a deserted island a million years ago. There is no need to worry you will not encounter any legendary creatures, as the only ones remaining from the prehistoric era are a colony of bats. These have chosen to live in a grotto overlooking the sea. A little lake village is accessible by dinghy and is interesting to visit with the possibility of buying fresh fish from local fishermen. The island and the bay of «Petalas» are only a small part of this archipelago limited to the west by the islands of «Lefkas» and «Itaca» and by the lovely continental coast «Epire» to the east. PREVEZA: Before arriving at the small port of «Preveza» for an evening in one of the many tavernas, spend a couple of hours sailing in the gulf of Anvrakikos. The unusual coastline as well as the beauty of the landscape will impress you. Moorings are not hard to find in this lake and you will spend some quality time doing nothing but soaking up the surroundings. Should you chose to spend the night, there is no reason not to. You may just experience one of the most beautiful sunsets of your trip. 32 PARGA: When arriving at «Parga» you can either leave your boat at the little port located in the west of the bay «Valtou» or you can leave it on a mooring in the bay itself. There is a path leading around the bay that will take you to the village of «Parga» in twenty minutes. Tucked away at the foot of a high, green mountain, it is protected by an islet «Aghia Panaghia» on which one finds the remains of a Venetian fortress. The «Parganiotes» had a special relationship with Venice. After many attempts, and finally with the help of the English, Ali Pacha became lord of the island. Parga, like many other provinces of the Empire only became associated with Greece in ZAKYNTHOS: After the earthquake in the Ionian Islands in 1953, the reconstruction of «Argostoli» on the island of Kefallonia was an architectural disaster. Luckily, that is not the case for the capital of the island, Zakynthos. Although modern, it was rebuilt following the Venetian style of the original. On this rich and fertile isle, one has the feeling of serenity. Many anchorages are waiting to give more good reasons to stay a while.to the north, Aghios Nikolaos will be your departure point for a visit to of one of the most beautiful marine grottos in the Mediterranean. On the beaches of Yerakas or Lagana, do not be surprised to see turtles arriving to lay their eggs. There are also the agreeable moorings at Keri, protected by the islets of Marathonisi and Vroma on the west coast, although very occasionally it is subject to swell. 2012

Ports and Islands in the Saronic Gulf and the Peloponese ATHENS/KALAMAKI: Agreeable sailing along the Apollon coast, which can be interrupted by a stop in one of the creeks that you pass. Be careful of the reefs of «Mermenghias» that are in the axis of the point of «Aliki», as well as those found a few miles before Kalamaki marina, where the Moorings base is located. Take advantage on your last evening in Athens to visit the city and go to «Plaka», right next to the Acropolis. We also strongly advise you book a lunch or dinner in one of the little restaurants that are located in the back streets of Alimos Marina. Or simply stop at a «Kafenion» terrace which will no doubt convince you to return to the «Islands of the Gods». Ten years of exploring with your boat will not be enough to appease your desire to relive these precious moments. CAPE SOUNION: Immediately to the west of Cape Sounion there is a small bay that is, unfortunately, often full of boats, but from there you can visit one of Greece s most beautiful ancient sites : Poseidon s Temple. It can be seen from quite a distance on its rocky pedestal. Should you prefer somewhere calm, choose «Legrana» bay a mile further west. EGINA: «Egina» is the island nearest to the Greek capital which explains why it is sometimes packed with tourists. It s port and village are pleasant but noisy. We prefer the small port of «Perdika» on the south west of the island where the tavernas and terraces are quieter and more authentic than the village.you may even be surprised by the quiet there, knowing that tumultuous Athens is only two hours away. On the eve of the end of your cruise, enjoy the pistachio nuts that are locally harvested every September. HERMIONI: The village is built on a cape bordering an impressive pine forest. Tranquility reigns here as it is somewhat cut off from the rest of the world. Access by road is long and stony, and only the hovercraft sometimes drop off a few adventurers searching for calm. There are some good tavernas, some next to the port and others with sunny terraces on the south side of Cap Kastri. With the exception of water and fuel, you can buy all your provisioning HYDRA: Another highlight of your cruise will be your arrival at the extraordinary port of Hydra. Here is the land of modern Greek heros - rich 19th century Hydra ship owners and fitters put their fleet and that of the Spetsai and Psara, at the disposal of those fighting the war for independence from the Turks that had been going on for 400 years. The houses of those rich families are those that circle the little port where donkeys are the only traffic allowed. This village is protected from all extreme signs of modernisation - serene and calm...until the evening. It is a cosmopolitan site where nights are short for some and long for others. 33 KAÏDARI: You may have a few difficulties finding the exact entry for anchorage at «Kaïdari», which is an excellent, natural shelter fjord with a hamlet of houses that have developed around it. The panoramic view is splendid and a grilled fish eaten at one of the terraces overlooking the bay will add to the visual pleasure. KILADIA: The anchorage at Kiladia is charmless and is not really recommended, unless you need to buy supplies. However, there are two creeks that merit a visit if you like crystalline waters bordered by white sandy beaches. The first is just after the cape «Korakas» and the second is the east of the «Thynni» point. Wind conditions are usually favourable and the environment is most agreeable. A word of advice: take care to avoid several reefs that overflow from the cape «Korakas» up to about 200m. to the west and all around the islet of the same name. LEONIDION: In line with «Astros» the high Peloponnese cliffs are an obvious contrast to the swampy plains of the «Argolide» and the coastline here becomes more interesting for sailing. The landscape is surprising because of its variety. You will notice quite soon the giant, natural fissure that finishes on the plain «Leonidion». The picturesque village is tucked away at the foot of high cliffs and the port (Skala), the only possible anchorage, is 2 miles to the south of cape «Sabathiki». The village, located 5km from the port is essentially devoted to the production of high quality olive oil and is worth the detour. There you will find lovely middle class houses that were once surrounded by luxurious gardens and the streets are very animated. Another 15 kms. further on is the curious monastery «Eloni», which overlooks the gorges leading to the village of «Aghios Kosma» with stone roofs. NAUPLIE: Welcome to Nauplie, the first capital of modern Greece. Principal port of the «Argos» in ancient times, it was a Byzantine city that became French, Venetian, and finally Turkish. From its successive occupations there remains an architectural influence that is rich and complex. The town is located at the foot of a remarkable Venetian citadel, which, like the fortification of the islet «Bourzi» in the centre of the bay, is a mosaic of styles. Despite the 200m. of steps leading up to the panorama of «Argolide», it is well worth the effort to go to the top of the citadel for the view. From «Nauplie» in a taxi or rental car, it is possible to visit the sites of «Mycenes» or «Epidaure». There is only one inconvenience to this idyllic stopover: Do not ever drop anchor! Try to tie up along one of the long quays that are generally deserted, because the bottom of the port is slimy with a nauseating odour. When it is hot the smell becomes unbearable. If that is the case, simply spend the day ashore and in the evening, leave with the boat and moor a few miles behind the islet «Tolo».

PALAIA EPIDAVROS: The port of «Palaia Epidavros» is not an ideal anchorage, but it is the departure point for a unique experience. Once you have secured your yacht (taking special care as swell movement is frequent here), jump into a taxi and within half an hour you can be on the exceptional site of «Askeplion» where you ll find a theatre called Epidaure. It is without doubt the most beautiful antique theatre in the world, preserved in its original state. 14,000 seated places in the middle of a wild and yet charming natural setting where a whisper can be heard by each spectator. A word of advice: Be there as soon as the site opens as the coaches of tourists from Athens arrive around 11:00 hrs. If you are a music lover and are familiar with ancient Greek, it is possible to attend musical presentations of Aristophane, Eschyle or others given by some of the best actors in Greek theatre in the evening on weekends. Reserve your places in any tourist agency you may pass on your way. SPETSE: The island of Spetse, home of «Bouboulina», heroine of Greek independence, has recently become a site much appreciated by all. The perfume of jasmine flowers floats in the air. Stone mosaics decorate the steps in front of some of the beautiful, traditional Greek houses. Anchor in the bay of «Baltiza» or, if you are lucky, at the quay at the back of the same bay, just after the shipyards. There «caiques» are still constructed from pinewood. The coastal path leading to the village is an agreeable, ten-minute walk. Note: treacherous rocks border the north, east and southeast coastlines of the island. It is highly recommended, for entry and exit to keep a line with the bay of «Baltzia» for a fairly long time before bearing east or west. POROS: Arrival in the Poros canal is an exceptional experience. A narrow channel bordering the quays separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the island of Poros, on which is cradled a village of typical architecture. Across from there is the little port of «Galatas», founded by Greek families that immigrated from Constantinople (Istanbul) mostly because of the similarity between the two sites. You will have a choice of several anchorages. Choose a mooring in the heart of the village in the north part of the principal quay between the wharf and the military school, or one in the many bays on the west coast of the island. The most agreeable one being that which opens towards the islet «Daskhalia» overlooked by a small chapel. Numerous tavernas with welcoming terraces tempt you to taste the traditional «ouzo» complemented by grilled squid or other traditional «mézés». Note: Passing cape «Skili» should take place outside of the «Tselevinia» islets. There is only one passage that is practical and we strongly recommend that you study the chart beforehand, especially if you are sailing, as ferry and hovercraft traffic is frequent. Ports and Islands in the Sporades ALONISSOS: A beautiful hilly wooded island with some of the best beaches in the Sporades (Hrisis Milia, Kokkinokastro, Tzorti, Leptos Gialos, Agios Petros, Kalamakia and Marpounta). It is the centre of the National Marine Park and also has a Seal Research and Protection centre. ALONISSOS (Patitiri): As has recently happened on other islands of the group, the capital of the island has moved from the hill village of Alonnisos down to the harbour of Patitiri. It is a lovely spot surrounded by cliffs on the South and pine-clad slopes at the back. Here you can visit the National Marine Park and Seal Protection centre for more information on the marine wildlife of the area. The recently opened Marine Museum with exhibits such as ancient maps, instruments and items found in old shipwrecks is definitely worth a visit. Good shelter and facilities, tavernas and bars on the waterfront. ALONISSOS (STENI VALA): a quiet fishing village in a small cove opposite the South end of Nisos Peristeri. Its good shelter, picturesque tavernas and very hospitable inhabitants make it popular with yachts. KIRA PANAGIA (PELAGOS): Kira Panagia or Pelagos, has beautiful beaches and a famous monastery, and is circled by small islands: Gioura, with the cave of Cyclopes caves with multicoloured stalactites and stalagmites, the shelter Piperi, Pappous, Peristera and Skantzoura, Psathoura with ancient ruins and the stronger Pharos of the Aegean Sea. These islands were chosen by the Mediterranean seals as a shelter. Between these islands there is a park to protect the species (seals). A lot of good shelter. No fuel, no water. KOUKOUNARIES: Koukounaries is 3 miles from the Moorings base. The beach of Koukounaries is one of the most beautiful in Greece (1km long and 30m wide) with lots of tavernas and bars. PATITIRI(ALONISSOS): Alonissos is in the Northern Sporades. The villages on the island are opposite Skopelos. The chief place, Alonissos is situated on a hill. Some of the most beautiful beaches can be found in Hrisi Milia, Kokkinokastro, Gorgi Gialos, Lefkos Gialos, Agios Petros, Kalamakia and Marpounta. In Patitiri you can experience the nightlife and good tavernas can be found in Votsi and Steni Vala. Water and fuel are available near the quai of Patitiri. Provisions and ice are also available. Exchange facilities, ferries to Skiathos

PLANITIS: Planitis (North of Pelagos or Kira Panagia). Planitis is the main port of this island, in a very well protected bay. It is deserted except for a large herd of goats and the cackle of several million cicadas. PERISTERA: Peristeri in the South of Peristera east of Alonissos. It is a beautiful island with two (inhabited) anchorages sheltered from the meltemi. Ormos Xero in the south east of the island and Ormos Vasiliko in the west of the island, and a small fishing hamlet ashore. No fuel, no water. SKIATHOS: Skiathos is the first island of the North Sporades group. It is a relatively small island, but its golden beaches, bright green mountains and its historical monuments all contribute to an image that makes the island one of the most beautiful in the Aegean. Skiathos has plenty of monasteries and churches to visit, as well as a castle built upon a giant rock on the northern part of the island. One of the greatest Greek writers, Alexandros Papadiamandis, was born here and his house is located on the main street by the harbour. Do not hesitate to visit! Fuel, water and provisions are available. There are numerous restaurants and tavernas on the main street of the port of Skiathos. SKOPELOS ISLAND: Skopelos, like Skiathos, is densely wooded in pine and olive trees over its slopes while its coastline is lined with picturesque bays and lovely sandy beaches. The island still has a remote feel to it in places giving you the chance to escape big crowds. It is also famous for its 360 churches, chapels, monasteries and convents, some of which contain real art work, frescoes and icons. SKOPELOS (HORA): The capital of the island on the East side. The houses and numerous churches of the town are piled one upon another around a rock amphitheatre above the harbour. With its asymmetrical roads and narrow curving alleys it pleasantly looks down from up high and invites us to explore. The harbour is registered as a Yacht Replenishment Station and offers good shelter and facilities. SKOPELOS (LOUTRAKI-GLOSSA): a picturesque village by the sea with splendid beaches to the SE of the harbour. In the afternoon, when its not too hot, take a walk up the hill to the beautiful village of Glossa and enjoy the magnificent sunset and amazing views over to the islands of Skiathos and Evia. The harbour offers very good shelter, good shopping for provisions and excellent seafood tavernas on the waterfront. SKOPELOS (AGNONDAS): An enchanting pineclad inlet and a perfect place to relax. All the tourist guides mention it is famous for its fish tavernas which serve fresh fish and lobster that will delight your taste buds. It would be an omission not to mention how friendly the local people are, as they have not yet fallen to tourism. It offers good shelter from the Meltemi. SKANTZOURA: A number of small islands lie off the coast of Skantzoura. Open to the west-southwest, the bottom of the sea is sand and seaweed. Excellent underwater fishing around the island. No fuel, no water. SKYROS: Linaria is the main port of Skyros island (South-west). There are many lovely beaches and low mountains to explore, caves for some underwater fishing, and even ponies - the only ones in Greece. At the tavernas you can savour fresh fish, lobster and local cheeses. The town of Skyros, also called Horio locally, clambers up a hill in a white semi circle, like an ancient theatre. On its top stood an ancient acropolis, one of the best strongholds in the Aegean. There are remains of Byzantine and chiefly Venetian fortifications to be seen today on the site. In Horio, there are two interesting museums: an archaeological one and an historical and folklore one. Every Skyrian house is a living museum of popular art. Also of great interest is the original architecture of the houses, with their pebbled entrances, picturesque roofs, hearth and other impressive features. Skyros has sandy beaches where the deep green of the pine trees mingles with the clear, blue water. Water and fuel are available on the quay. You may find some provisions but it is better in Hora. You can find tavernas and restaurants. There are buses to Hora and hydrofoils to Skiathos. It is the only place from which to visit «Hora». TSOUGRIA: A small uninhabited island SE of Skiathos. A couple of beautiful beaches on the west side offer an excellent spot for swimming and snorkelling. Small taverna on the NW beach. No fuel - no water TRIKERI: Trikeri or Panagias Island is a paradise covered with olive trees. On the hill there are Mycenaean wall ruins. At the picturesque port of Aghios Ioannis there are a few traditional houses, and the hospitable locals will welcome you to the island. You will discover plenty of serenity (no vehicles allowed) beautiful beaches, seabirds and superb sunsets. Limited provisions ashore. No water, no fuel OREI CHANNEL: Orei Channel is in the Southwest of Skiathos, and ends in Mount Pelion, the place of the mythologian Centaurs. It offers various sights, picturesque fishing villages, temples, Byzantine churches, monasteries, plains wooded with pine trees everywhere and fine attractive beaches. There is a charming township with a long history intertwined with various Greek legends. Luckily, it is a place not yet busy with tourist activity. It offers a pleasant night anchorage at Trikeri Bay, which provides good all round protection. The meltemi does not blow here. Water and fuel are available. Shopping for provisions. Pleasant restaurants and tavernas on the waterfront. Hydrofoil to the Northern Sporades. 35
