1 #3 Clam Framework Map Book NEFMC Habitat Advisory Panel Meeting, April 3, 218 Page 4 Management areas relevant to Clam dredge framework. Includes Great South Channel Habitat Management Area, divided into a mobile bottom-tending gear closure (black crosshatch) and an area where exemptions for clam dredges may be considered (blue outline). The red dotted Nantucket Lightship Habitat Closure is presently closed to mobile bottom-tending gears, including hydraulic dredges, but will reopen once the Omnibus Habitat Amendment 2 regulations are implemented. Page Bathymetry in the GSC HMA. Contours are in meters, and depths beyond meters are not shown. Colored shading indicates 1-meter depth ranges. Source: The Nature Conservancy Northwest Marine Ecoregional Assessment, based on the NOAA Coastal Relief Model. Meters Fathoms Page 6 Seabed forms, which classify seafloor topography into discrete units using just two variables: seabed position and slope. Seabed position describes the topography of the area surrounding a cell. The seabed position calculations used Fels and Zobel's (199) method, which evaluates the elevation differences between the model cell and the surrounding cells within a specified distance. Slope is simply the change in elevation between adjacent cells, expressed in degrees or percent. Source: The Nature Conservancy Northwest Marine Ecoregional Assessment. There appears to be some correspondence between seabed form and both fishing effort and habitat characteristics, but these relationships have not been evaluated statistically. Source: The Nature Conservancy Northwest Marine Ecoregional Assessment. Page 7 Shear stress (Newtons per square meter), based on FVCOM model. Source: Harris et al Page 8 Sediment stability (relationship between shear stress and grain size). Source: Harris et al The next series of figures are based on imagery from the UMass Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology video survey. Data are shown at the station level; there were four images taken at each station. Classification Sand Gravel Pebble Cobble Boulder Size (Wentworth scale) < 4 mm 4 mm to 6.4 cm 6.4 to 2.6 cm > 2.6 cm Page 9 Stations classified as having complex vs. not complex habitat. Complex indicates that the seafloor was covered with at least 1% gravel in one or more of the images taken at the station. Not Page 1
2 complex indicates less than 1% gravel coverage in all images. Gravel indicates a combination of pebbles, cobbles, and boulders. Source: SMAST. Page 1 Occurrence of cobble at station. Source: SMAST. Page 11 Occurrence of boulder at station. Source: SMAST. Page 12 Occurrence of long-lived epifauna at station; indicates subset of stations where epifauna covered 3% or more of the seabed in at least one of the four images. Source: SMAST. Page 13 - Occurrence of gravel pavement at station. Pavement is defined as gravel covering 8% or more of the seabed. Source: SMAST. Page 14 Percent cover of gravel across the images at a station. Images were classified as less than 1% gravel cover, 1-3% gravel cover, or greater than 3% gravel cover. This figure shows both heterogeneity among images at the station, and the areas with higher and lower % cover of gravel. Source: SMAST. The next series of figures show cod catches in the NEFSC trawl survey. Page 1 Age cod (-1 cm), spring. Source: NEFSC trawl survey. Page 16 Age cod (-13 cm), fall. Source: NEFSC trawl survey. Page 17 Age -1 cod (-24 cm), spring. Source: NEFSC trawl survey. Page 18 Age -1 cod (-34 cm), fall. Source: NEFSC trawl survey. Page 19 Age 2+ cod (2 cm+), spring. Source: NEFSC trawl survey. Page 2 Age 2+ cod (3 cm+), fall. Source: NEFSC trawl survey. The next series of figures show surfclam distribution in fishery independent hydraulic dredge surveys. All figures show total catch (bushels of clams per meter squared) and the subset of the catch that is comprised of sub-market clams (those less than 12 cm). Page 21 Surfclam relative abundance and distribution in the Northeast Fishery Science Center survey since represents a shift in the survey methodology. Source: NEFSC. Page 22 Surfclam relative abundance and distribution in the Northeast Fishery Science Center survey prior to 212. Source: NEFSC. Page 23 Surfclam relative abundance and distribution in the 217 Science Center for Marine Fisheries survey. Source: SCEMFIS. The final series of figures show fishery dependent effort data. Page 24 Surfclam revenue from logbooks, for the years combined. Colors show the estimated value per.2 km2 grid. These revenues are for surfclam only, not ocean quahogs. The Nantucket Lightship Habitat Closure was closed to hydraulic dredges during this period. Source: NEFSC. Page 2 Density of polls based on a Surfclam/Ocean Quahog VMS declaration for the years combined, filtered at an imputed speed of 4 knots. The Nantucket Lightship Habitat Closure was closed Page 2
3 to hydraulic dredges during this period. These data include VMS polls regardless of whether the vessel was targeting surfclams or quahogs, but quahog data from logbooks indicate that the species is not targeted in this location. Source: Northeast Ocean Data Portal. Page 26 Hydraulic dredge vessel location tracks assembled for the 216 SCEMFIS project on ancillary data associated with the NEFSC dredge survey. Polls were obtained from individual clam vessels by downloading their complete P-Sea WindPlot data and were filtered to eliminate those unlikely to represent fishing. Only polls within the vicinity of the GSC HMA are shown. Source: Powell et al. 216 (see report for detailed methods). Page 3
