Next June, please join me on this historical and archaeological tour of breathtaking spots often overlooked by most travelers. While based in Thessaloniki, visit the archaeological site and museum at Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great and capital of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon. Discover Vergina, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aigai, noted for its palace and royal tombs. Explore the ancient land of Dion, as well as the village of Litochoro, home to many textile workshops. We ll also travel to Amphipolis, where excavations uncovered the important gymnasium; Philippi, the first Christian city in Europe; and the Macedonian seaport of Kavala, one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. Continue to Athens to see the most extensive collection of Greek antiquities in the world at the National Archaeological Museum, and the Antonis Benakis collection at the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. No trip to Greece would be complete without exploring the Acropolis and its majestic Parthenon. Conclude with an exclusive after-hours tour of the Acropolis Museum, featuring a talk by a local expert. There is an optional extension for two days in which we ll explore famed cities around Athens, including Delphi, Epidaurus, Nafplion, Mycenae, and Corinth. He has led tours for the Museum throughout Europe and North Africa, and is a frequent traveler to Greek and Roman sites around the Mediterranean. Mr. Dabell was educated at Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London, and is an authority on Piero della Francesca and Italian Renaissance art. He lives in Rome, where he teaches the history of art at Philadelphia s Temple University program. Spend the afternoon at leisure before gathering at the hotel for a welcome reception and dinner with Frank Dabell. R, D Thessaloniki Sunday, June 9 After a morning lecture, proceed to the White Tower, the symbol of the city, followed by a visit to the Archaeological Museum. Admire its unique collection of Macedonian gold and important finds from the Archaic, Classical, and Roman periods. Drive through the university area and the Citadel for marvelous views of the city. After lunch, visit the Byzantine church of St. Dimitrios, as well as the Arch of Galerius and the nearby Rotunda with its beautiful mosaics. Dinner and the evening are at leisure. Thessaloniki / Pella / Vergina / Mieza Monday, June 10 Travel back in time on a journey to the archaeological site and museum at Pella, the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon and birthplace of Alexander the Great. Continue to Vergina and the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Aigai, notable for its palace and lavishly decorated royal tombs, including that of Philip II, whose conquests paved the way for his son Alexander s expansion of the Hellenistic world. In the afternoon, visit Mieza, where Aristotle taught the young Alexander. The most eloquent evidence of this prosperous city is found in its burial monuments, second only to those of Vergina in their significance., D Thessaloniki / Dion / Litochoro Tuesday, June 11 Visit the ancient site of Dion, within view of Mount Olympus. Between lush greenery are two theaters, a Roman bath complex, patrician villas, and numerous sanctuaries where ancient gods were worshipped. After lunch, continue south through the unspoiled forests of the Enipeas Valley to the village of Litochoro, dating from the 14th century and built in the style of traditional Macedonian architecture. Mariners and weavers have long resided here, and today there are still many textile workshops in town. Thessaloniki / Amphipolis Wednesday, June 12 Travel to Amphipolis, where excavations uncovered one of the most important buildings in the city, the Gymnasium. The prosperity of the city was sustained by the local production of vases, figurines, statuaries, and other works of art. Finds from the houses, sanctuaries, and graves paint a picture of the everyday life of the inhabitants. Outside the city walls are the monumental tombs of the Macedonian type that belonged to the nobles. View the lion of Amphipolis, a burial monument dating back to the 4th century B.C. that probably belonged to Laomedon, a general and close friend of Alexander s. B, D Thessaloniki / Philippi / Kavala Thursday, June 13 Travel east to the archaeological site of Philippi, the first Christian city in Europe, visited by Saint Paul in 49 A.D. and inscribed by UNESCO. Visit the partially preserved Roman theater, the first Christian basilica, and the prison of Saint Paul. Continue to the village of Lydia, named after the first woman in Europe to be given Christian baptism. Enjoy lunch in Kavala, built on the slopes of Mt. Symvolo and one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. Return to Thessaloniki with the balance of the afternoon and evening at leisure. Thessaloniki / Athens Friday, June 14 Enjoy a morning and lunch at leisure before boarding an afternoon flight to Athens. Upon arrival, transfer to the King George Hotel for check-in. Dinner will be in a taverna in the lively Plaka district of the city.
