See below for further details. DAY 1 Arrive Dijon, embark and meet the crew Arrive in the afternoon in Dijon, the capital of Burgundy. You will embark (approx 3:00pm, subject to change) and meet your crew and tour leader. In the evening you will have the opportunity to take a stroll through Dijon. meals: D DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 A short cycle in the northwest Dijon region (20km) In the morning we take a warm up cycle in the northwest Dijon region. This is a great chance to test out our bikes, explore the surrounding countryside and the famous Burgundy canal, and passing Lake Kir. In the afternoon you can explore Dijon town on foot. Dijon is not just a city of mustard, although there is a mustard museum you can visit. There is the magnificent Ducal Palace as well as a number of churches and cathedrals, with the crypt of Dijon Cathedral dedicated to St Benignus, dating back more than 1,000 years. On the Church of Notre Dame is a small carving of a little owl (la chouette) that is according to local legend a good luck charm which works when you make a wish as you touch it with your left hand. The streets of Dijon are perfect for exploring on foot and there are many elegant buildings to admire. Dinner is on board our barge. Cruise the Burgundy Canal then cycle to Longecourt en Plaine (45km) The day starts with a small sailing trip to and through the first two locks in the Burgundy Canal. Leaving the barge, our cycle route continues through meadows and forests to again meet up with the Burgundy Canal. The countryside through which we cycle is classically Cote d Or. Our day s cycle will end at the village of Longecourt en Plaine, where we will rejoin the barge. Cycle to Auxonne on the river Saône then to St Jean de Losne (45km) Using a series of small roads, the cycle today takes you through forests and past some pretty villages to the town of Auxonne on the river Saône. Later the route follows the river to St. Jean de Losne where the Burgundy Canal links up to the river Saône. St Jean de Losne was built by the Dukes of Burgundy to protect the salt trade from the nearby Salins les Bains salt works. 3 DAY 5 DAY 6 DAY 7 DAY 8 Visit a museum then cycle along the river Saône to Seurre (45km) This morning we have an opportunity to visit the Musee de la Batellerie, with its fascinating exhibition showcasing the history of the Burgundy Canal. Following this we first cycle to the Abbaye de Citeaux, a great place for a picnic lunch. From the Abbaye shop you can purchase the famous abbey cheese. Continue along the river Saône to the small town of Seurre. Cycle to Beaune and train to Chalon sur Saône (25km) This morning we cycle to the exquisite fortified town of Beaune, a source of art and history. The town is home of the famous Hotel-Dieu and Wine Museum and is the capital of the Côte d Or. Beaune has many shops, cafe-studded squares and a huge outdoor market. During the morning your tour leader will take you on a stroll through the town and you will have time to visit such sites as the church Collegiale Notre-Dame or the museum of Burgundy wines. From Beaune we take a train ride to Chalon sur Saône, a port town located at the Saône river and the Canal du Centre. Here you will have time to stroll through the town, window shopping or sipping coffee in a local café. In the evening dinner will be on board the barge. Visit wineries en route to Tournus (60km) From Chalon the cycle follows an old railway track which is now a cycle path. Arriving in Buxy you visit a winery in an old tower before a downhill run to the river Saône. The cycle concludes in the town of Tournus, home to the beautiful St. Philibert church. The abbey dates from the 10th century and is one of the oldest in France. Transfer by train to Dijon, trip concludes In the morning your guide & crew will say goodbye and you will travel with the group by train to Dijon, where the trip ends at approximately midday. 4 detailed itinerary: Tournus to Dijon (2) DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 DAY 6 taste of burgundy Arrive Dijon, transfer to Tournus, embark and meet the crew Meet your guide at the train station in Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, between 13:30 and 14:00. (Refer to your pre-departure information for further details.) Travel by train to Tournus, departing at 14:30 and arriving at 15:30, where you will embark and meet your crew. Times subject to change. There is time to explore Tournus, home to the beautiful St. Philibert church. Cycle from Longecourt en Plaine then sail the Burgundy Canal (45km) Our day s cycle will begin at the village of Longecourt en Plaine, where we will leave the barge and the Burgundy Canal, cycling through countryside which is classically Cote d Or. 5 DAY 7 DAY 8 A short cycle in the northwest Dijon region (20km) In the morning you will complete your final cycle in the northwest Dijon region. This is a great chance to explore the surrounding countryside. In the afternoon the barge will dock in Dijon and you can explore the town on foot. Your closest airport is Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. There are good connections throughout Europe and the rest of the world to this airport. You are then able to take a train directly from the airport to the Paris metro. The TGV leaves from Gare de Lyon in central Paris to Dijon. trip grading - introductory to moderate INTRODUCTORY to MODERATE GRADE 2 The cycling is introductory to moderate (2) grade with daily cycling distances from 20 to 60km on undulating well graded roads and bike paths. The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos. It is considered suitable for beginners. the boats THE BARGE EXPERIENCE During your week long barge and bike experience you will be travelling with fellow cyclists of different ages, nationalities and physical condition. All have a common wish to experience a relaxed and somewhat active holiday, so the cycling speed will always be easy going. The barges are not only a means of transportation; you also sleep, eat and relax aboard. The ships are equipped with a recreation/ dining room, sometimes with a separate bar, a modern galley and a spacious sundeck. From the recreation room there is an excellent view of the surrounding scenery. Depending on the waterways the ships sail between 8 and 15 km per hour. The crew consists of a captain and a cook, both professionals, who are often assisted by an extra hand. The captain is responsible for the safe transportation of the passengers and their luggage. The chef and his/her assistant take care of your meals. The barge travels with you from port to port and will transport your luggage. The barges range in standard from D to A+ with A+ being the highest level of comfort and facilities. These ratings are based on the barges in the fleet servicing France, Holland and Belgium. The following is an indication of what the ratings mean. Please note that none of the barges could be called luxurious. All barges are equipped with double cabins with private facilities (except D category or unless otherwise noted). Cabins on comfort barges are equipped with two level beds instead of bunk beds. The crew on the barge will ensure that your stay aboard is as pleasant as possible. The trip will be accompanied by an enthusiastic and multilingual tour leader. He/she guides you along the fixed itineraries, offers information enroute, answers your questions, assists with problems, offers advice and may invite you to accompany him/her on some interesting city walks. This information is also on your tour voucher. and Anna Maria V The ANNA MARIA V barge is a C+ category vessel equipped to sail the French inland waterways. Seven two person cabins are provided with split level beds and a small bathroom with private facilities, the only single cabin has the same private facilities. Six sit on kayaks are available for a trip on the Burgundy Canal. The large sun deck offers guests a place to sit during warm summer evenings. With a cool drink, served from the saloon with adjoining bar this is the place to be! Captain Arjan and his wife Daniëlla are ready to welcome you aboard! trip organisation The experience of sailing on a barge is one that should not be missed. During the trip you ll find out that the perspective constantly changes: on a narrow canal the barge seems huge, on the river it is more like a tiny nutshell. From the sundeck you can enjoy the view as it passes by. While the skipper will bring you safely to the next dock or navigate the locks, the cook is preparing a delicious meal. Along the various sailing routes there will be embarkation points where you begin cycling. You are supplied with a packed lunch and bike to explore the backroads, canal routes, villages and national parks. The guide speaks English and one or more other languages and usually cycles with the group. The guide will ask one of the group members to act as a sweep, taking up the rear position in the group. After the cycling is over for the day you return to the barge to relax and enjoy a leisurely dinner. If we are moored in a town there are also opportunities to take in further sights at your leisure. On board there will be a mix of nationalities. This trip is not exclusive to UTracks. equipment provided BIKES During the trip you will be provided with a 24 speed bike with hand brakes and locks. You will be provided with a pannier to carry your gear during the day. Helmets are not supplied but are highly recommended and we suggest bringing one from home. Electric bikes are available on request, 2 per departure and a supplement applies (e bike includes bicycle insurance). Page 7

8 dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets but may not be able to assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). On this trip, whilst vegetarian options are always available, lactose or gluten free diets may not be catered for. Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to medically recommended dietary requirements. Usually those with special requirements will need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Three weeks prior to your departure from your home country you will receive your final travel vouchers with details on how to join the trip. On embarkation you will receive your information pack. about your group You will be joining a group with a mix of participants from different countries, speaking different languages including English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. Your tour leader is likely to be guiding in more than one language to cater to all participants. This is not an English only speaking tour. Daily briefings will usually be conducted in Dutch and English. The length and format of these briefings will be tailored to the makeup of the group. fast facts COUNTRIES VISITED VISAS France Visas not required for citizens of Australia, Canada, USA and New Zealand for up to 90 days in a period of 180 days for all Schengen countries (see www. schengenvisainfo.com/schengen visa countries list/ for countries part of the Schengen). Please ensure your passport is stamped on arrival in the Schengen area. For all other nationalities and for longer stays in countries covered by the Schengen Agreement (Australian New Zealand, Canadian and US passport holders), please contact the relevant embassy. Stays of longer than 90 days in the Schengen area require a long stay visa for the country you are spending most time in. However long stay visas are unlikely to be issued unless there is a valid reason (eg. studying in country). Unfortunately we cannot assist in obtaining visas for long stays due to individual country visa requirements. CLIMATE The trip runs between April October during the European Summer. The months of June August are busy times with temperatures ranging between degree Celsius and sometimes slightly higher. 9 Aboard your hotel barge your cabin does not have much storage space but this can vary depending on the barge and cabin configurations, e.g. some cabins have small storage cupboards and/or storage space underneath or beside the beds. We recommend to not bring large suitcases on board and to only bring what you will actually need for the trip for your own comfort. If you bring aboard a standard 20kg suitcase this is permitted but may mean less space to move around the cabin.
