2 CCI Cross-Project Working Groups Working groups are intended to encourage and facilitate cross-project collaboration Develop best practice on common issues Take advantage of common opportunities Avoid duplication of effort Every CCI project nominates a representative to take part in each group. 3 CCI Data Engineering Working Group (DEWG) Objective: To ensure maximum usability of the datasets produced within CCI, and cultivate tools for their access, discovery and manipulation, through common CCI data standards. ECV data product access, standards, formats, metadata, etc. ECV processing best practice e.g. collaboration on FCDRs, ancillary data sets, processing chain architecture, etc Membership: CCI project System Engineers Coordinator: Ed Pechorro (ESA Climate Office) ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 20/03/18 Slide 3

4 CCI Data Engineering Working Group (DEWG) Examples: Cooperation on ECV data access with CCI Open Data Portal and CCI Toolbox teams Getting CCI data into obs4mips, ECV Inventory, GEO Portal, etc. Common approach to CCI system document deliverables (SRD, SSD, SVR, PUG) DOI's for ECV data sets Develop common CCI position on external data & coding standards e.g. CF nomenclature for uncertainties, ECSS Agree on best land/water masks for data processing Manage open source code repository (github), common tools (e.g. compliance checkers) Technical evolution of ECV processing into operational climate services Solving common EO data access issues, and sharing knowledge on FCDR quality Sharing experience of "Big Data" processing, and community "Platforms", e.g. DIAS Common understanding of EU GDPR ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 20/03/18 Slide 4

5 CCI Climate Science Working Group (CSWG) Objectives: Encourage/facilitiate collaboration between ECV projects and CMUG on the exploitation of ECVs in climate science. Maximise the contribution of the CCI in international scientific assessments: e.g. IPCC assessments and special reports, BAMS/WMO State of the Climate reports, etc. Deliverable: Annual Assessment of CCI progress towards IPCC AR6 and Special Reports Membership: CCI project Climate Users (CRG members) Coordinator: CMUG ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 20/03/18 Slide 5

6 CCI Climate Science Working Group (CSWG) Examples/ideas: Forum to collectively discuss CRG and CMUG activities, avoid overlaps, and to share the benefit of practical experience in using the CCI ECVs Share experience of putting the ECV data to work in climate science Understand better user requirements for cross-ecv consistency Develop common user requirements for the specification of ECV uncertainties Plan cooperation in international assessment exercises, science papers, conferences Coordinate CCI contribution to international research programmes e.g. Future Earth, WCRP Discuss the use of reanalysis data Coordinate outreach to the climate modelling community Collect examples of ECV usage for the CCI Climate Data Forum web pages ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 20/03/18 Slide 6
