Continue on to Colmar, located in the middle of the Alsatian wine route, and considered to be the capital of Alsatian wine. 4 Day 5: Wednesday, September 14, 2016 Strasbourg The day is yours to independently explore Strasbourg and everything it has to offer. Perhaps you ll choose to take an optional tour delving into the history of Alsace during WWII, including visits to the Maginot Line, a French strategic defence system, and the KL-Natzweiler, the only Nazi concentration camp in France. (B) Day 6: Thursday, September 15, 2016 Strasbourg - Dijon - Macon - Embark Ship Say au revoir to Alsace and head toward the city of Dijon in Burgundy. Spend time exploring the old town and the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, a remarkably wellpreserved building which now houses the fine arts museum. Make a stop along the way at the medieval church of Notre Dame. After time on your own to explore or enjoy lunch, we head to the town of Macon to board the MS Amadeus Symphony, your home for the next five nights. Experience It! The Rhône River The Rhône is one of Europe s most significant rivers. It is the only major river to flow directly into the Mediterranean Sea and historically has been important to civilizations dating back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. It served as one of the main trade routes and many cultures settled along its banks despite its difficult navigation due to fierce currents. In modern times, the Rhône River has been tamed with a series of locks and a deepening of its channel. The mighty Rhône River truly a sight to behold! Arles Roman Aqueduct Pont Du Gard and Uzes $69 CAD The Pont du Gard is the greatest surviving stretch of a fifty-kilometre-long aqueduct built by the Romans in the middle of the first century to supply fresh water to the city of Nimes. With just a seventeen-metre difference in altitude between start and finish, the aqueduct was quite an achievement. Later, tour the village of Uzes, located near the start of the aqueduct. This lovely old town is perched on a hill above the River Alzon. Half a dozen medieval towers the most fetching being the windowed Pisa-like Tour Fenestrelle, tacked onto the cathedral rise above its tiled roofs and narrow lanes of Renaissance and Neoclassical houses, the residences of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century local bourgeoisie, who had grown rich on textiles. Once you re a few minutes south of Arles, you enter the atmosphere of the area with its series of long, level roads crisscrossing the marches and farmlands. In order to protect the exceptional fauna and flora of the Camargue, part of it was early listed as a Nature Reserve in Later, the whole island of Camargue (the delta of the Rhone River) was listed as the nature Regional Park of Camargue in 190 It is home to an astonishing range of wildlife, including the renowned Camargue bulls and horses living in semi-freedom, and many hundreds of species of birds. You will also visit Sainte Marie de la Mer, located on the Mediterranean Sea where the Rhone joins the ocean.
