2 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott CMA CGM Head Office Quai Arenc Marseille In November 2004 Zaha Hadid was selected to design the corporate headquarters for CMA-CGM, French shipping-container company in Marseille, facing the sea The design consists out of a high rise tower with offices, and a low rise part with public functions like an auditorium, restaurants, a large aquarium and a maritime museum The blue glass façade, with 2 sloping slides, makes it 'elegant, fluid and sculptural' Hadid's London-based firm was chosen over two other Pritzker prize winners, Norman Foster and Christian de Portzamparc The 147 m, 33 storey high tower is also called "Tour French Line", to be completed in the second half of 2009 It will be the city's highest building, and first tower to be built after 30 years Situated on a small strip of land, wedged in between infrastructure, it is part of a large redevelopment plan for the Marseille waterfront: Euromediterranée Other high-rises are planned in this district, among which designs by Jean Nouvel and Massimiliano Fuksas Public access unknown! 3 photo: Michael Noordam photo: Michael Noordam Gare de Saint-Exupéry TGV Aéroport Saint Exupéry Colombier-Saugnieu Gare de Saint-Exupéry TGV (formerly Gare de Satolas) is a railway station situated 20km from Lyon city centre Satolas was designed by Santiago Calatrava, built to serve the TGV line from Paris to Marseille and opened on 3 July 1994 The dramatic of the central hall s superstructure derives from one of Calatrava s sculptures: a balanced shape resembling a bird at the point of flight The building is a steel covered cement structure Above the tracks, a 300m long passenger concourse gives easy access to the platforms and is equipped with several travelators Satolas railway station is linked to Lyon's Satolas Airport by a footbridge This first airport (historically) to be served by a high speed station Unfortunately, this proximity to the airport has not helped the station Lack of interconnexion with Lyon's urban transport network is frequently cited for the station's low usage The arrival of the LESLY express tram in 2009 will help this situation [Wikipedia] photo: Michael Noordam Client Santiago Calatrava SNCF Michael_Noordam 24 hrs walk, bicycle, car, bus, train, airplane 3

5 photo: Thom Mckenzie Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts Quincy Street 24 Cambridge Massachusetts United States The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, designed by Le Corbusier, is a building of intricate spatial devices, carefully choregraphed movement, and revealing views It is Le Corbusier's only building in North America and one of his last buildings As such the building is a fascinating collection of ideas, architectural language and devices developed in Le Corbusier's lifetime, compressed into a complex building which reveals and explains itself to you with ease Elements from La Tourette, Marseille, Chandigarh, and earlier works of the 1920s such as Ville Savoye and Maison Ozenfant are visible Approaching the building from any angle one is swept up, under or into the building, leading to the centre of it as views of the different volumes and glimpses into the office spaces are revealed The exhibition space opens up before arriving at the full-height glazed walls of the studio, where the building is effectively cut through in section, split by the ramp and movement of people photo: Thom Mckenzie 1963 Le Corbusier thom The building is open from Monday to Friday, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon A gallery space on the ground floor is open to the public and studio spaces are clearly visible from the central ramp To contact the administration go to wwwvesfasharvardedu or call The building is located near Harvard Yard Take the red line to Harvard Square Station 5

6 photo: Anna Armstrong photo: Anna Armstrong Unité d'habitation Berlin Flatowallee Berlin Germany Le Corbusier designed several variations of the Unité d Habitation, the most famous of which is in Marseille, All were derived from Le Corbusier s visionary 1922 city plan, known as Ville Contemporaine The plan envisioned massive residential blocks set in open green areas towers in parks, bringing light and air to the residents of urban housing The Unité type was most notable for its creation of internal streets and accommodation of social and communal functions: kindergartens, medical facilities, recreational spaces, all within the housing block The Berlin Unité lacks most of the amenities (save a shop and a post office on the ground floor), but is considered unique for its more generously-sized apartments It accommodates 530 units on 17 floors The internal streets here are oppressive, windowless corridors Still, the building is in quite good condition; its hilltop setting, iconic formal qualities, and polychromatic façades are very striking (text from Galinskycom) Public access unknown! 1957 Le Corbusier jeooren photo: Anna Armstrong 6

12 photo: Michela Sala photo: Michela Sala Vieux Port Pavilion Quais des Belges Marseille This giant mirrored canopy called 'the Vieux Port Pavilion', recently unveiled in Marseille,, was designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners The pavilion measures nearly 150 feet (46 meters) long and is made of highly polished stainless steel meant to reflect people and the surrounding environment of Marseille's harbor Minimal, yet effective, this intervention provides a new sheltered events space on the eastern edge of the port With six slender pillars supporting its razor-thin profile, the polished stainless steel canopy amplifies and reflects the surrounding movement of the harbor, creating a spectacle that encourages pedestrians to stop and look upward 2013 Foster & Partners michela_sala photo: Michela Sala Metro L1 Vieux port - Hotel de ville 12
