3 Paris Iconic Attractions Montparnasse 56 Panoramic Visit Price from: 6.50 per student / 9 per teacher / One FREE teacher place per 20 students Take in the very best view of the Eiffel Tower and everything else Paris has to offer on the amazing 56th floor of the Montparnasse Tower which stands 210 metres high and on Paris s highest roof terrace. Protected from the elements the 56th floor affords a 360 view of the avenues, roofs, monuments and gardens across the city. Just a few steps further up you can admire the same views from the open-air terrace on the very top of the tower. With several visual aids to enhance your visit including interactive markers, archive photos of Paris on display and downloadable quiz s for general knowledge, maths and the French language, this attraction is a popular choice. Eiffel Tower Price from: 7 per student / 9 per teacher (for 2nd floor lift entrance) Visited by more than 5 million people each year, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most well known monuments in the world, and as the tallest structure in Paris it dominates the city s skyline. An iron lattice tower it was erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the World s Fair held that year. Although initially criticised by artists and intellectuals of the day it is probably Paris s best-known landmark. The 2nd floor is perfect for making a photographic study of Paris. The only down-side, apart from the queues, you can t see the Eiffel Tower from the Eiffel Tower! Arc de Triomphe Price from: 30 per group (arranged in groups of 35 students, includes 2 FREE teacher places) / Additional teachers 7.50 each The most famous symbol of the French Republic, the Arc de Triomphe, is an integral part of the urban Paris landscape. Standing at the top of the Champs-Elysées at the highest point along the line running from the Louvre to the Grande Arche de la Défense, it links old and new Paris. Napolean had the arch constructed in 1806 in honour of France s great army and it is also home to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. From the top of the monument, visitors benefit from a panoramic view of Paris, during the day and at night, and the museum situated within the structure retraces its history. Notre Dame Cathedral Price from: 30 per group (arranged in groups of 35 students, includes 2 FREE teacher places) / Additional teachers 6.50 each An absolute masterpiece of Gothic architecture, Notre Dame is not to be missed, for its architecture, its stained-glass windows, its sculptures, and its history. A self-guided visit at the Notre Dame lasts approximately one hour. Montmartre & Sacré Coeur Price from: FREE entrance to the church / Dome and crypt 6 per person An officially designated historic district, Montmartre is one of the most colourful neighbourhoods in Paris, so it s no surprise that this area is a favourite with visitors to the city. It became famous in late 1800s with the arrival of artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh and Picasso. Topped by the Scare Coeur, Montmartre is the highest hill in Paris at 130 metres, providing great free views over the city. Completed in 1912, the Sacré Coeur is relatively new in comparison to other churches and cathedrals in Paris. In a Roman-Byzantine style, the Sacré Coeur is recognizable by its white colour. Inside the building, the ceiling is decorated with the largest mosaic in France measuring about 480 m². Experience the fantastic view over Montmartre and Paris northern suburbs from the steps below the Sacré Coeur or for an even better panorama climb the 300 steps to the dome. Place de la Concorde Price from: FREE The largest open space in Paris, the 84,000 square metres of Place de la Concorde is situated along the Seine and separates the Tuileries Gardens from the beginning of the Champs-Elysées. 4 Jardins du Luxembourg Île de la Cité Price from: FREE The Île de la Cité is one of two remaining islands in the River Seine and the historical and geographical centre of Paris. Home to the famous Notre Dame cathedral and the Palais de Justice, the modern Supreme Court built in the 18th century, which is also home to La Conciergerie. Jardin du Tuileries Price from: FREE Paris most visited gardens, situated between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde. The gardens feature several fountains, numerous sculptures and two museums, the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume and the Museé de l Orangerie. Jardins du Luxembourg Price from: FREE Visit the largest public park in Paris. The garden is famed for its calm atmosphere. Free musical performances are held in the park bandstands and music groups can request to perform here. The garden also contains over a hundred statues, monuments and fountains. Central to the trail is a sense of engagement with these world famous sights, turning a standard sight-seeing expedition into a three-dimensional multi-faceted experience using key skills such as creative and lateral thinking, observational and puzzle-solving skills. Team-based and competitive, the trail produces winners who demonstrate team-work and strategy as well as aptitude and attention to detail as well as showcasing the iconic sights of one of the world s greatest capital cities. The Paris Apprentice Allow: 4 Hours Price from: 6 per student / FREE for teachers Route length: Approx 4 miles A MFL challenge for French language students combined with an engaging experience among some of the most iconic sights and monuments in the French capital. Running from Notre Dame via the Louvre, the Jardin des Tuileries and the Petit Palais en route to the Eiffel Tower, the challenge is enjoyed in teams who undertake a series of ten challenges, each in its own zone along the route. Based on the format of the Apprentice TV programme, the target language material uses each location to engage and hold student interest from KS2 through to KS4, with a KS5 option focussing totally on target language task cards. A standard sight-seeing expedition turns into a three- dimensional, linguistic, cultural multi- faceted experience which can be done as a single event, divided to fit around an itinerary over a day or more, or shortened by omitting zones to suit a tighter time schedule. Museums In addition to their permanent exhibitions the majority of the museums in Paris hold temporary exhibitions throughout the year, some of which are free of charge, others are at an additional cost. Museums - Art & Sculpture Musée du Louvre Price from: FREE general admission (requires student and teacher ID) The Louvre s origins date back to 1793 after François I and Louis XIV separately resided there. Today it houses treasures from the Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans in their own extensive galleries. There are European works from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century with some of the most famous works of art in the world on show, including the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Wedding Feast at Cana. Musée d Orsay Price from: FREE general admission (requires student and teacher ID) The Musee d Orsay is located in the centre of Paris, on the banks of the Seine. Originally a train station, the museum houses one of the finest collections of Impressionist art in the world. Throughout 80 separate galleries it features art from the period 1848 to 1914, with works by Delacroix, Degas, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Gauguin, Cezanne, Van Gogh and many others. In the impressive museum grounds you will see the sculptor s The Gates of Hell, Balzac and The Thinker. 6 Musée de l Orangerie Price from: FREE general admission for students / 9 per teacher Visit Monet s Waterlilies installed in two galleries once hailed as the Sistine Chapel of Impressionism at l Orangerie museum. Home to modern- art collections of Paul Guillaume and Jean Walter, l Orangerie also features paintings by Renoir, Cézanne and Picasso, amongst others. Musée Picasso Paris Price from: 5 per person After a five-year renovation the Musée Picasso art gallery located in the well-known Hôtel Salé in the Marais district of Paris has re-opened. With the exhibition space having been doubled in size it has allowed many more works of the master s work to be on display and new tours created of the collections. Donated to the French state after the artist s death this unique collection is composed of 5,000 pieces by the artist, more than 200,000 personal archives. The rare diversity of his collections is an invitation to endlessly explore the powerful work of this artist a painter, sculptor, ceramicist, photographer and writer-through a multitude of thematic tours and experiences. Also on display is Picasso s own exclusive collection of 150 paintings by other artists including Matisse, Cézanne and Le Douanier Rousseau. Musée Marmottan Monet Price from: 6.50 per person plus a 1.50 booking fee Situated on the east side of the Bois de Boulogne, Musée Marmottan is a 19th century townhouse home to approximately 65 paintings by Claude Monet. Here you will see paintings of Rouen Cathedral, Gare St Lazare, Giverny and the Houses of Parliament in London. The museum is devoted to modern and contemporary art in all its forms: paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and video. The museum s permanent collections, with more than 8,000 works of art, show the diverse art trends of the 20th century: cubism, Ecole de Paris, abstract art, new realism, etc. In parallel to these permanent collections, large temporary exhibitions are also organised. The painted ceilings, romantic stucco decorations, fireplaces and chandeliers all date back to the time the mansion, most of which is listed, was first built. You will discover a remarkable collection of perfume related items which will take you back in time, all the way from the antiquity to the 20th century. Musée de l Armée Invalides (Military History) Price from: FREE general admission The Musée de l Armée, created in 1905, is located in the prestigious setting of the Hôtel National des Invalides. With 500,000 classified objects, spread over 8000m², these objects make this museum the most important museum of military history in France, and one of the leading ones in the world. Shortly after it was completed came the French Revolution, when the Revolutionist government changed the church into a mausoleum. It then flipped back and forth to a church over the years but eventually assumed its lasting role as a burial place for martyrs and brilliant French citizens for good including Victor Hugo and Marie Curie. Inside the architecture is visually amazing: it has the Gothic decorations combined with the mainly classical style of the building, creating a truly remarkable neoclassical monument. Victor Hugo lived on the second floor of the Hôtel de Rohan-Guéménée from 1832 to He wrote some of his major works here: Marie Tudor, Ruy Blas, Les Burgraves, a large part of Les Misérables, and was visited by Lamartine, Vigny, Dumas and Gautier. The visit of the apartment illustrates the three main stages of his life (before, during and after exile) through the display of different memorabilia and displays of his drawings, as well as an iconography of his literary work. Shopping Place Louis Lepine - Marché aux Fleurs et aux Oiseaux Price from: FREE The square is named after a prefect of police, Louis Lepine. He was given the nickname The Little Man with the Big Stick for his skill is handling large Parisian crowds. The square is now home to the flower market and Sunday bird market. Since 1808, the lovely metal pavilions shade the bucolic Flower Market (Le Marché aux Fleurs). A wide array of flowers, plants and trees can be found. Tens of thousands of pots are displayed : Primavera s, Violets, Bilberries, Pomegranates and other beautiful plants are offered each season. Due to the forms and the vibrant colours, many artists and creators come to loose themselves in this urban prairie looking for inspiration. The market is open daily from 8am pm. On Sundays, the picture is complete with the opening of the Bird Market (le Marché aux Oiseaux) where you can find rare species and all the accessories to go with them. Paris Saint-Ouen Flea Market Price from: FREE The rag and bone trade has long been part of Parisian history and towards the end of the 19th century, when the authorities began to clean up the city, the tradesmen and their families were forced to set up home in the area of Saint-Ouen. In the early 1900s, the beginnings of the flea market was born as Parisians came by to browse the stalls and enjoy an illicit drink at the open-air cafés on Sunday mornings. After the First World War, the market grew in popularity and became increasingly commercialised and today it caters for every interest with over 2000 boutiques and market stalls selling all manner of goods. Well worth a visit for the window-shopper and bargain-hunter alike. Open Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, all year round 10.30am to 5.30pm (opening times can very with the seasons). Stretching from the Champs-Elysées roundabout to the Place de la Concorde, wooden chalets selling a variety of wares including yuletide trinkets, traditional gifts and speciality foods line both sides of this famous avenue alongside the trees adorned with sparkling lights. Elsewhere, scattered throughout the city there are other markets to enjoy including ancient Montmartre, Montparnasse Tower and Saint-Germain-des- Prés on the Left Bank. From the recreation of a battlefield to the aircraft and tanks on display, via projections, sound broadcasts and interactive terminals, the museum makes use of the very latest technologies. Palais de Versailles Price from: FREE general admission (requires student and teacher ID) The Palace of Versailles is one of the largest and most opulent castles in the world. A fine example of 18th century French architecture and art, it is one of the most visited attractions and castles in France, as well as being a UNESCO s World Heritage site and must-see French landmark. The residence of the kings of France from Louis XIV to Louis XVI, the Palace houses the Royal Apartments, including the Hall of Mirrors, and bedchambers of the King and Queen, plus the apartments of Louis XV s daughters and heir to the throne. The Grand and Petit Trianon and Marie Antoinette s hamlet are also well worth a visit. The extensive gardens are 250 acres of landscaped and manicured lawns and fountains, and it is the largest of its kind in Europe, created back in the 17th century, with a geometric pattern of bushes, flowerbeds and trees. The rides and attractions are spread across different historic cultures and themed worlds; the Vikings, Egyptians, Romans and the ancient Greeks, plus Gaul and Travel through Time. Gallic humour is in abundance as it transports visitors right to the heart of the comic book. Well known in France for its large variety of rollercoasters, its range includes a rollercoaster with 7 loops, a Gallic bobsleigh ride and a log flume style ride with an 11 metre drop at the end! There are also live shows in the park combining stunts and special effects.
