1 Day 1» Sunday, January 3 Itinerary Johns Hopkins University Historic through Museums and Monuments January 3-22, 2016 Flight Departure to Europe Please refer to your individual flight schedule., France Day 2» Monday, January 4 Arrival at Charles de Gaulle Airport. 11:00 am outside of customs, Terminal 2E approx. 12:00 pm Arrival Your coordinator, Fatima Ezzouine, will be waiting for your group with a sign after you clear customs. She will be available to assist you during the guided activities while in. The bus company, Convivial Service, will take your group from Charles de Gaulle Airport to your residence. Travel time: approx. 1 hour FIAP Jean Monnet 30 rue Cabanis FRANCE Phone: +33 (0) RER Station: Denfert-Rochereau (Line B) Métro Station: Glacière Important note: Due to your early arrival time, the rooms may not be ready. A room will be provided to store your luggage. Official check-in time is at 2:30 pm. 12:30 pm Orientation Meet Fatima for an orientation session. She will give you information about, hand out maps of the city, the museum allowance and your public transportation passes to you. She will also explain how to use the public transportation system in and where the cafeteria at FIAP is. Afterwards she will show you the closest supermarket, ATM and post office and will be happy to assist you with buying French sim cards or phones. Duration: approx. 1 hour Important note: Please take care of your metro pass, because it is non-refundable. Keep it with you at all times during your stay in. 2 afterwards Free time Enjoy some free time and explore your new surroundings. For lunch, you can ask Fatima or the FIAP reception desk for restaurant recommendations. 2:30 pm Check-in Check into your rooms and use the time to unpack and to relax a bit before the boat tour. 3:00 pm Departure Meet Fatima and your group and travel by public transportation to the starting point of your guided boat tour. 3:30 pm Free time Enjoy some free time for picture taking at the Eiffel Tower. The famous landmark of was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World Exposition, which was to celebrate the 100 th year anniversary of the French Revolution. Today it welcomes almost 7 million visitors a year. 4:00 pm Tour as arranged with Fatima Explore on an exciting guided boat tour on the Seine River with Bateaux iens. This boat tour travels through the heart of French history, including such famous sights as the Notre Dame Cathedral, Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Alexander III Bridge, and Louvre Museum. You will also see Les Invalides and Napoleon s burial site. Duration: approx. 1 hour 5:00 pm Departure Travel by public transportation back to FIAP. afterwards Free time Enjoy some free time and freshen up before your dinner at the residence. Dinner Dinner will be served, plan on a group table and a group discussion tonight. FIAP cafeteria Day 3» Tuesday, January 5 afterwards Free time Take a free morning to adjust to the time difference, prepare your class materials, and explore the area. Consider taking a walk along the lake in Parc Montsouris or visiting the Butte-aux-Cailles, a trendy hilltop neighborhood. 3 1:30 pm Tour Enjoy a faculty-led walking tour of the Île de la Cité which is one of two remaining natural islands in the Seine within the city of and also the center of where the medieval city was refounded. Duration: approx. 30 minutes 2:00 pm Visit Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral and the towers of the Cathedral. The Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the most renowned cathedrals in the world, is widely considered to be a classic example of French Gothic architecture. It is one of the first buildings in the world to utilize flying buttresses. Duration: approx: 1 hour 3:00 pm Walk as arranged with Fatima Walk with Fatima and your faculty leaders to Sainte-Chapelle. Walking time: approx. 15 minutes 3:15 pm Security Check Upon arrival at the Sainte-Chapelle, you have to pass a security check. Important note: It is strictly forbidden for visitors to be in possession of any metal objects, such as knives or scissors. 3:30 pm Visit Enjoy a faculty-led visit to the Sainte-Chapelle, a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic architecture built by Saint Louis in the heart of the Palais de la Cité. Discover its unique stained glass windows rendering the air iridescent with light and color, symbols of the Heavenly Jerusalem. Duration: approx. 45 minutes 4:15 pm Walk as arranged with Fatima Walk with Fatima and your faculty leaders to the archeologial crypt of Notre Dame. Walking time: approx. 15 minutes 4:30 pm Visit Start your faculty-led visit to the archeological crypt under the Parvis de Notre-Dame de which was built to protect the ruins discovered during the excavations that began in 1965, conducted by the Commission du Vieux. The crypt was opened in 1980 with the aim of presenting elements from the successive buildings constructed on the site from ancient times to the 19 th century. Duration: approx. 1 hour 15 minutes 5:45 pm Departure Travel by public transportation to the restaurant for the night. Travel time: approx. 45 minutes 6:30 pm Welcome Dinner Enjoy your welcome dinner at Le Café du Commerce. 3-course meal and water are included; additional food/beverages are to be purchased at your own expense. afterwards Departure Travel by public transportation back to FIAP. 4 Day 4» Wednesday, January 6 9:00 am Class Class time with JHU faculty Dr. Rodini on Early ian Collections and the Founding of the Louvre. Duration: approx. 3 hours 12:00 to 1:45 pm FIAP classroom afterwards Free time After lunch, you have some free time to prepare for your visit to the Louvre. 2:15 pm Departure Meet Fatima and your group and travel by public transportation to the Musée du Louvre. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 3:15 pm Visit Enjoy a visit to the Musée du Louvre, with a combination of class and individual activities. With approximately 300,000 works, the Louvre is one of the most extensive museums in the world, and it is home to some of the world s most famous works of art, including Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa. You will begin with an orientation by your faculty leaders before you can explore the museum at your own pace or with your faculty leaders. Duration: depending on your individual schedule. You are welcome to stay until the museum closes at 9:45 pm. afterwards Free time Take some free time to explore the area; Fatima is available for restaurant suggestions. The museum, now known as the Musée national du Moyen Âge, is best known for its collection of tapestry, the most famous of which is a 15 th century cycle known as La Dame à la Licorne (The Lady and the Unicorn). Duration: approx. 2 hours 30 minutes Important note: This activity will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. 5 11:45 am to 1:45 pm 2:00 pm Guest lecture Meet Dr. Leonie Hénaut and enjoy a guest lecture to learn about the History of Painting Conservation at the Louvre. Duration: approx. 3 hours Important note: This lecture will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. Your first set of journal entries is due at the beginning of class. afterwards Free time Free time to work on your assignments, relax, or explore the area. FIAP classroom Day 6» Friday, January 8 afterwards Free time Enjoy a free morning and consider visiting the Arc de Triomphe, which was constructed in honor of those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars. Construction of the Arch began in 1806 and finished in Ironically, Napolean himself was unable to enjoy the Arc de Triomphe, as he was defeated in 1815 at Waterloo. 11:45 am to 1:15 pm 1:30 pm Departure Travel with your group by public transportation to the Panthéon. 2:00 pm Tour Begin your faculty-led walking tour at the Panthéon. Meet guest lecturer Prof. Jean Estebanez for a discussion, and visit the Musée national d Histoire naturelle and/or Jardin des Plantes. The original Jardin royal des plantes médicinales was founded by Louis XVIII in the 17 th century and its operations were overseen by the royal physicians. The Jardin des Plantes, as it is known today, is part of the greater Musée national d Histoire naturelle. The conversation will be wrapped up over a tea at the Mosque tea house. Important note: This activity will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. Tickets may be purchased from your museum allowance. afterwards Free time The remainder of the day is free time for you to further explore ; dinner is on your own. 6 Day 7» Saturday, January 9 afterwards Free time Enjoy a free day and consider visiting the Jardin du Luxembourg, a favorite place for strolling since the 18 th century. The garden has succeeded in retaining its charm and is still extremely popular. With its many 19 th century sculptures, it doubles as an open air museum. Day 8» Sunday, January 10 7:00 to 9:00 am afterwards Free time For those who love books, consider visiting the Shakespeare and Company Bookshop, located on left bank. Originally opened as a publishing house, library, and boarding house for aspiring writers, it was featured in Ernest Hemingway s memoir, A Moveable Feast. A nearby restaurant, Le Procope, is rumored to have once been frequented by the likes of Voltaire, Rousseau, and Verlaine. Day 9» Monday, January 11 9:00 am Class Class time with JHU faculty Dr. Rodini on World s Fairs and the Display of Technology. Duration: approx. 2 hours 30 minutes afterwards Free time Enjoy some free time for a quick lunch at your own expense. 12:15 pm Departure Travel with your group by public transportation to the Eiffel Tower. Travel time: approx. 45 minutes Important note: Please bring your passport with you. You may not be allowed to enter the tower without it. 7 1:00 pm Visit Enjoy a visit to the Eiffel Tower, one of most iconic landmarks. It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World Exposition, which celebrated the 100 th year anniversary of the French Revolution. Today it welcomes almost 7 million visitors a year. Duration: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes Important note: The top deck is closed due to construction work. afterwards Tour Enjoy a faculty-led walking tour of the Champs de Mars and Palais de Chaillot area afterwards. This tour will be ending at the Cité de l Architecture. Duration: approx. 30 minutes Important note: This activity will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. 3:00 pm Tour Meet Hélène Katz, a representative of the Direction des publics, and enjoy a private guided tour of the Cité de l Architecture, which will cover the history of the museum and discovery of the collections. She will also explain the organization of museums and museum culture in France. Located in the Palais de Chaillot, the Cité de l Architecture opened in 2007 and contains both exhibition halls as well as an extensive architectural library. Its main exhibition, Musée des Monuments Français, is divided into three galleries and focuses on French monuments. Duration: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes afterwards Free time Spend some free time on your own to explore further on your own or to work on your course assignments. Day 10» Tuesday, January 12 tba Tour as arranged with your faculty leaders Enjoy a faculty-led walking tour, including a visit to the Musée des arts et métiers and the Palais Garnier. Commissioned by Napoleon III, the Palais Garnier is currently home to the Opera, which was founded by Louis XIV in One of the most recognizable features of the Palais Garnier is its iconic Grand Staircase. Important note: Today s activities, including group lunch in the Opéra district, will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. Entrance tickets may be purchased with your museum allowance. Last entrance to the Palais Garnier is at 4:30 pm. 8 Day 11» Wednesday, January 13 tba 11:45 am to 12:45 pm Visit as arranged with your faculty leaders You will be divided into groups to visit one of the following house museums: Musée Victor Hugo, Musée Jacquemart-André, Musée de la Vie Romantique, or Musée Gustave Moreau. Duration: depending on your individual schedule Important notes: This morning activity will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. Entrance tickets may be purchased with your museum allowance. 1:00 pm Departure Travel with your group by public transportation to the Musée Nissim de Camondo. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 2:00 pm Tour Meet your guide, Lucile Stellakis, and start your private guided tour of the Musée Nissim de Camondo. Originally constructed in 1911, this mansion turned house museum is a showcase of 18 th century French furniture and art. Duration: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes 3:30 pm Class discussion as arranged with your faculty leaders Walk to a local café and enjoy an afternoon coffee while participating in a faculty-led discussion of the day s visits to house museums and the Musée Nissim de Camondo. Important note: This activity will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. afterwards Departure Return to FIAP on your own by public transportation. Day 12» Thursday, January 14 9:00 am Class time Class time with JHU faculty Dr. Rodini, focusing on the Musée d Orsay. 9 1:45 pm Departure Meet your group and travel by public transportation to the Musée de l Orangerie. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 2:45 pm Visit Start your faculty-led visit to the Musée de l Orangerie, which is a great favorite of public due to its reverent use of space. One of its most famous works, Claude Monet s Nymphéas (Water Lilies), is displayed in twin oval rooms, exactly according to the artist s wishes. You will also have time to explore on your own the Jardin des Tuilleries and enjoy views of the Seine before your next visit. Duration: approx. 2 hours 4:45 pm Walk as arranged with your faculty leaders Meet your group and walk to the Musée d Orsay. Walking time: approx. 15 minutes 5:00 pm Security Check Upon arrival at the Musée d Orsay, you have to go through a security check. Duration: approx. 30 minutes 5:30 pm Visit Enjoy a faculty-led visit to the Musée d Orsay. The building now housing the museum was originally a train station. Before being converted into a museum, the train station was used as the setting for the 1963 movie The Trial, based on an unfinished novel by Franz Kafka. Duration: depending on your individual schedule. You are welcome to stay until the museum closes at 9:45 pm. afterwards Free time Enjoy a free evening in. Day 13» Friday, January 15 8:00 am 8:15 am Departure Meet Therese Falinski, your guide for the day, and travel by public transportation to the Château de Versailles. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 45 minutes 10:00 am Tour Enjoy a private guided tour of the enchanting Château de Versailles. Louis XIV, the Sun King, resided in this château in the 17 th century. It has been on UNESCO s World Heritage List for 30 years and is one of the most beautiful achievements of 18 th century French art. The château lost its standing as the official seat of power in 1789 but acquired a new role in the 19 th century as the Museum of French History. During your visit you will see the king s apartment, the opera, and the gallery of mirrors. They were designed in the late 17 th century by Le Nôtre, who was an expert not only in botany but also in architecture and painting. Today, his work is regarded as the epitome of formal French-style gardens. Le Nôtre was commissioned by Louis XIV, who considered the Versailles gardens to be of equal importance to the Château. afterwards Departure Return to FIAP on your own by public transportation. Consider walking up the Montmartre hill and sit down on the steps leading to the famous Basilica Sacre Coeur to enjoy an amazing view over. Day 15» Sunday, January 17 7:00 to 9:00 am afterwards Free time Consider visiting the Institut du Monde Arabe, which was founded together with 22 Arabic nations. The building, by architect Jean Nouvel, is considered to be one of the masterpieces of contemporary architecture. Père Lachaise is well known for its famous residents, including Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Frédéric Chopin, and Molière. Important note: This morning visit will be arranged by JHU; please check with your faculty leaders for further details. 11:45 am to 1:15 pm 1:30 pm Departure Meet your group and travel by public transportation to the International Council of Museums. 2:00 pm Visit Enjoy a visit to the International Council of Museums which was created in 1946 and is the only organisation of museums and museum professionals with a global scope, committed to the promotion and protection of natural and cultural heritage. With approximately 30,000 members in 137 countries, ICOM is a network of museum professionals acting in a wide range of museum-and heritage-related disciplines. Walking time: depending on your meeting point 5:00 pm Visit Enjoy a visit to the Centre Pompidou, which was constructed from and designed in the style of high-tech architecture. It was named after Georges Pompidou, President of France from 1969 to The Place Georges Pompidou, located in front of the museum, is noted for the presence of street performers such as mimes and jugglers. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 10:00 am Tour A private guided tour of the Musée du Quai Branly has been arranged for you. Opened in June, 2006, Musée du Quai Branly showcases the art, culture, and civilization of the indigenous cultures of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. The museum is organized into three departments: exhibitions, archives, and a library. 13 Day 19» Thursday, January 21 afterwards Free time Consider spending a day in Montmartre neighborhood. The Montmartre Cemetery is home to some of s old guard: think Edgar Degas, Gustave Moreau, and Francis Picabia. You could also take the cable car up the hill and visit the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, which was built to atone for the spiritual sins believed to be the cause of France s misfortunes in the late 19 th century. Day 20» Friday, January 22 5:00 am Check-out and breakfast boxes 5:15 am Loading the bus in front of FIAP Exactly at 5:30 am! approx. 6:30 am Departure Arrival Departure Please bring your luggage to the main entrance of the hotel and return your room key to the receptionist. Please remember to pick up your breakfast boxes. The bus driver will be in front of the main entrance of the hotel to help you load your luggage onto the bus. Please be sure to double check that you have everything with you. Travel together by private bus, Convivial Service, to the Charles de Gaulle Airport.
