3 Welcome to our 2019/2020 Tours brochure. Our unwavering desire to create the perfect event for the passionate enthusiast has led us to concentrate our efforts on further improving and expanding our range of hosted tours. Whether it be Motorsport, Classic Aviation or one of the other specialist tours, the common theme is a continuation of an unrivalled level of service that our guests have come to expect over the last 13 years. MOTORSPORT TOURS Highlights this year include the historically important Formula One Grands Prix in Monte Carlo, Spa- Francorchamps, Monza and the floodlit season finale in Abu Dhabi. Classic motorsport events are well catered for with the Italian road racing classic, and year on year our most popular tour, the Mille Miglia. New for 2019 is our Planes, Trains and Automobiles Vintage Tour on the Belmond British Pullman to the amazing period spectacle that is the Goodwood Revival and includes a vintage airliner flight over London. CLASSIC AVIATION TOURS 2017 saw the launch of our successful Classic Aviation Tours business and in 2019 the portfolio of opportunities to indulge your piston-engine passion have once again expanded and improved. Now including: Warbird Hangar Tours, VIP access at the world s leading classic airshows and two multi-night tours focusing on the Battle of Britain and Dambusters. Being part of the action is a key element and you can take a taxi ride in one of the last surviving Avro Lancaster s or fly in an original WWII veteran two-seat Supermarine Spitfire. MILITARY HISTORY TOURS 2020 sees the 76th Anniversary of D-Day and we are hosting a special remembrance tour to commemorate this monumental event in world history. Commencing in the UK, this inclusive eight-night tour will visit strategically important sites including Southwick House, Churchill s War Rooms and dinner on HMS Belfast, an original D-Day warship. In Normandy we will join the veterans at numerous events throughout the anniversary week including mass parachute drops and remembrance parades. CLASSIC SPORTS CAR DRIVING TOURS Porsche, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati Famous names that stir the passion of any true classic car enthusiast. In April 2020 you can fulfil your dreams of driving these thoroughbreds, as we set off on a 4-night driving experience through the sun-drenched roads of Portugal s Algarve region. 4 WARBIRD HANGAR TOURS DUXFORD APRIL / JULY / SEPTEMBER 2019 Our Warbird Hangar Tour Experience gives you behind-the-scenes access to one of the world s leading experts, the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford Aerodrome. The ex-wwii Battle of Britain airfield, now home to the Imperial War Museum, has numerous exhibits celebrating flight through the ages and is the perfect location to immerse yourself in everything related to vintage aircraft. Your day starts with a briefing by one of ARC s leading engineers and then moves on to a guided tour of the Aircraft Restoration Company and Historic Flying hangars. You ll get to see where the warbirds are restored from the ground up, serviced, maintained and operated from. After a light buffet lunch, it s time for the highlight of the day, your photo opportunity sitting in the cockpit of an original WWII Supermarine Spitfire. Once your tour is complete there s ample opportunity to look around the IWM and, as this is a live airfield, you may be able to catch all sorts of classic aircraft practising displays, departing or arriving back at base. Before heading home from a truly unforgettable aviation experience, finish off the perfect day with afternoon tea and cakes and one last chance to catch any warbirds in action. 5 DAMBUSTER TOURS PART ONE - TAKE OFF June 2019 THE DAMBUSTERS TOUR, PART ONE TAKE-OFF The Dambusters raid was one of the most remarkable military actions of World War II on land, sea or air. We are offering you the once in a lifetime chance to take a taxi ride in one of the few remaining Lancaster s in the world. You will stay in the same hotel that 617 Squadron used as a base and drink in the same bar. As well as the taxi ride, your tour culminates in a flight over the actual dam where the Lancaster crews trained in early DAY ONE Sunday. Your tour commences on Sunday morning as we get together in London ready for our luxury coach ride to Lincolnshire. After a brief stop for afternoon tea at one of the Dambusters practice dam locations, we arrive at the Petwood, our hotel for the next three nights. From January 1944, the Petwood became the officers quarters for 617 Squadron when they were posted to the nearby Bomber Command station at Woodhall Spa. In the early evening we will get together for our welcome drink s reception, followed by dinner and a special guest speaker who will entertain you into the evening. DAY TWO Monday. Today we take the opportunity to tour the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby. You will get to see the BBMF aircraft, including the Avro Lancaster, at close quarters and observe the skilled technicians keeping these historic warbirds in airworthy condition. We then make our way to RAF Scampton the operational base for the Dambusters crews of 617 Squadron, where we have arranged a visit to Guy Gibson s office. Before dinner we will have an exclusive showing of the 1955 Dambusters film in a unique location. DAY THREE Tuesday. It s time for a major highlight of the tour, a taxi ride in an original WWII Lancaster. We have exclusively booked Just Jane for the day and there will be plenty of photo opportunities before you take your seat. After a briefing in the operations hut you climb aboard this iconic aircraft and feel the four Rolls Royce Merlin engines throb as they build up to take-off power. Once she s moving down the runway you will experiencing the same sensation as those crews back on 16th May A day to remember, followed in the evening by a dinner in a location that will never be forgotten. DAY FOUR Wednesday. After checking out of the Petwood Hotel we travel West to Derwent Water in Derbyshire. This is where 617 Squadron mastered low-level flying and perfected their dambusting technique. You will now retrace the steps of your heroes with a 30-minute helicopter flight over the stunning scenery of the Peak District, culminating in a pass over Derwent Dam, exactly as the Dambusters did in training admittedly a little higher than the 60 feet they practised at! After all this excitement, enjoy a relaxing journey back South to Leicestershire and our farewell drinks and last group dinner. Thursday morning, we check out and make the short trip back to North London. Immerse yourself in the history of the Dambusters raid and commemorate the gallant heroes of 617 Squadron with like-minded enthusiasts. The Dambusters Tour Part One, takes you from the raid planning, through the weeks of intensive low-level training to the point of take-off on 16th May 1943 with our truly interactive and exclusive tour. 7 HAWKER TYPHOON RB396 HAWKER TYPHOON PRESERVATION GROUP REGISTERED CHARITY There is currently no flying Hawker Typhoon in the world; or a memorial to the 666 who fought and died in it. The Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group and working hard to put that right but we need support! The Hawker Typhoon played an essential role in the success of D-Day. RB396 is a unique survivor, the sole remaining combat veteran Hawker Typhoon, and it is the one being rebuilt to flight, with a target date of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in June Our aim is to raise 5M to restore RB396 as a memorial to honour the air crews, ground crews and all the production staff who designed and built the Hawker Typhoon. This will be a fitting tribute to people like F/O Frank Johnson RCAF (above) the primary pilot of RB396. There are many ways that you can support the project. You can join the supportersʼ club from as little as 25, receive inside information and the chance to work on the project. The Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group is a registered charity so all donations, including membership subscriptions, can be eligible for Gift Aid and Tax Relief. There is currently no flying Hawker Typhoon in the world; nor is there a memorial to those air and ground crews killed during WWII whilst serving on it. 9 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX TOUR Spa Francorchamps August 28 th - September 2 nd 2019 One of the highlights of the Grand Prix season is the Belgian Grand Prix at the legendary Spa Francorchamps circuit in the Ardennes Forest and you can be there to experience a weekend you ll never forget! Spa-Francorchamps circuit is among the most historic on the calendar, having hosted a (nonchampionship) Grand Prix as long ago as 1924, and remains one of the most popular venues with drivers and fans alike. Our superb package starts with return Eurostar rail transfers from London-Brussels and includes a 3-day reserved seat in a grandstand that gets you to the heart of the Grand Prix action as the cars negotiate the tricky La Source hairpin and then blast through Eau Rouge, one of the most famous corners in motorsport. 10 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX TOUR MONZA SEPTEMBER 5 th - 9 th 2019 MONZA - A track that combines speed with skill, it also has a heart and soul of its own. The names of great drivers and the sounds of engines from years gone by linger in the trees surrounding the track located in the centre of the Royal Park. Formula One visited the circuit as part of its first season and it has remained a permanent fixture on the calendar ever since. Over time, Monza has borne witness to an incredible list of historic moments and famous victories. All of them combine to make it one of the most magical places on the calendar. For fans there is nowhere that encapsulates the sport better than this circuit. Join us from September 5th - 9th 2019 for our 4-night hosted tour to an iconic race circuit. You and your guests will enjoy a superb escorted VIP tour, relaxing in the most exclusive of surroundings. We have lined up a great collection of hotels, authentic restaurants and a guided tour of the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. Late afternoon, we ll depart Maranello bound for our hotel in Milan, In the evening we are booked in for dinner at one of our favourite Milanese restaurants. DAY THREE Saturday. Today we re heading out of Milan to the North and the stunning scenery of Lake Como where our private motor boat will take us across the most beautiful of Italy s lakes, from Como town to Bellagio. Spend the afternoon exploring this picturesque beauty spot with its high-quality shops, restaurants and ice-cream parlours. Saturday night is party night in Milan on race weekend and once you ve enjoyed another fine group dinner it s time to explore the bars and clubs in the centre or just sit back, enjoy a Martini and the wonderful views of the stunning Cathedral. DAY FOUR Sunday. Race Day. After breakfast we depart in plenty of time to get to the Monza Circuit before the traffic builds. Your location for today is a grandstand seat at the famous Variante Ascari chicane. Opposite one of the large TV screens, you won t miss a moment of the action in the build up to and during the big race, along with all the support races. After the day s action at the circuit, it will be a short pit stop back at the hotel for a quick freshen up and then we make our way to the farewell dinner in one of Milan s top locations. Our new tour includes a luxurious vintage train journey, 2-nights at the elegant 4* Rubens Hotel on Buckingham Palace Road and a 30-minute flight in a classic de Havilland Devon aircraft over central London. DAY ONE Friday. Check-in to the Rubens Hotel. RAF Lashenden became a prototype for the temporary Advanced Landing Ground airfields that were built in France after D-Day, when the need for advanced landing fields became urgent as the Allied forces moved east across France and Germany. 13 BATTLE OF BRITAIN TOUR September 19 th -24 th 2019 The Battle of Britain was the most famous aerial conflict in British history and now you can follow in the footsteps of those brave young pilots, who we regard as the few. We start from Lord Dowding s office which was the headquarters of Fighter Command during this intense period, visit the underground bunker s that served as operations rooms and attend the Battle of Britain Airshow at Duxford aerodrome. The tour culminates in the opportunity for you to either fly in or alongside the legendary Supermarine Spitfire. DAY ONE Thursday. Your Battle of Britain tour commences this afternoon with a private screening of the iconic 1969 movie - Battle of Britain, followed by our welcome drinks and dinner at the RAF Club s central London location. DAY TWO Friday. We have a private guided tour of Lord Dowding s office and RAF Bentley Priory, Fighter Command s HQ during the Battle of Britain. After lunch we move on to RAF Uxbridge and visit the original 11 Group Ops Room bunker. Dinner this evening will be at an undisclosed secret location, with a special guest. DAY THREE Saturday. After checking out of our London hotel we make our way the short distance to the RAF Museum at Hendon for a very special look at the Battle of Britain Fighter Four. Established in 1968 as the landmark legacy of the RAF s 50th anniversary, the award-winning RAF Museum is located on the site of the ex-raf Hendon WWII Aerodrome in North-West London. We are privileged to be guided around original examples of the four fighters that were the key aircraft of the Battle; Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1A, Hawker Hurricane Mk 1, Messerschmitt Bf109E- 4/B Emil and Fiat CR42 Falco (Falcon). In the late afternoon we transfer to the Quy Mill Hotel & Spa in Cambridge. This stylish AA 4 Silver Starred Hotel is full of character and charm. In the evening we have exclusively hired the Mill Room for our group dinner. DAY FOUR Sunday. The annual Battle of Britain Air Show brings to life Duxford s finest hour as an important WWII fighter station defending Great Britain from aerial attack in In the sky you will witness the sights and sounds of a mass Spitfire flypast and an afternoon of entertaining aerial displays and dogfights from iconic aircraft of the Battle of Britain including Hurricanes, Spitfires, Messerschmitts, Bristol Blenheims and many more. 14 DAY FIVE Monday. After breakfast we transfer the short distance back to Duxford Aerodrome where your day starts with our unique Warbird Hangar Tour. Giving you behind-the-scenes access to world leading Spitfire experts, the Aircraft Restoration Company. After a briefing by one of ARC s leading engineers you move on to a guided hangar tour of the Historic Flying hangars. You ll get to see where the warbirds are restored from the ground up, serviced, maintained and operated from and a photo opportunity sitting in the cockpit of an original WWII Supermarine Spitfire. After a light buffet lunch, it s time for the highlight of your Battle of Britain tour. Depending on your chosen tour package, either climb into the rear cockpit of an original WWII Supermarine Spitfire for a 20-minute Flight Experience or take your seat in a classic airliner to fly alongside a Supermarine Spitfire. TWO-SEAT SPITFIRE PASSENGER FLIGHT Take to the skies in THE aircraft that won the hearts of both pilots and public in the Battle of Britain. it s a symbol of Britain s refusal to give up in the country s darkest hour. The iconic Spitfire is a joy to watch and hear, imagine what flying in one must feel like! Twynhams Tours and our colleagues at ARC will create a moment in time that you will never forget a flight in an original Spitfire that saw action in World War II. FLY WING-TO-WING WITH A SPITFIRE EXPERIENCE Travel back to the thirties in style in the Dragon Rapide vintage airliner and enjoy a graceful sightseeing flight over Cambridge in one of the last flying Dragon Rapides in the world. Each of the eight seats on board has a large window, perfect for viewing the landscape below and allowing you to fully appreciate the graceful lines of the WWII Supermarine Spitfire that will join us during the flight. The Spitfire pilot will perform graceful arcing turns and spend time on both sides of the Rapide, giving everyone a chance to take plenty of photos! Whichever flight option you choose this will be an unforgettable classic aviation experience. This evening the group s final dinner and farewell drinks will be at a top Cambridge restaurant. DAY SIX Tuesday. After a leisurely breakfast we transfer back to the RAF Museum in Hendon where you can either spend a few hours having one last fighter fix or continue with your onward journey. 18 MILLE MIGLIA TOUR Italy May 2020 The Mille Miglia (Italian for Thousand Miles) was an open-road endurance race which took place in Italy twenty-four times from 1927 to 1957 and is one of the greatest classic car race events in the world. Since it s reintroduction back in 1977 it has been a four-day regularity race around Italy, starting and finishing in Brescia, taking in Rome and other historical Italian cities. Like the older Targa Florio and later the Carrera Panamericana, the Mille Miglia made Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) sports cars like Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes Benz and Porsche famous. The race brought out an estimated five million spectators per year from 1953 until 1957 and was also a round of the World Sports Car Championship. Check in to the fantastic boutique hotel on the shores of Lake Iseo on Monday lunchtime and then board our iconic Riva Aquarama motor yachts for an early evening cruise to a drink s reception and welcome buffet dinner at our lakeside restaurant. DAY TWO Tuesday. After breakfast and a morning relaxing at your leisure we will transfer you to Brescia town centre for the sealing ceremony where you will have time to relax, grab a cappuccino and catch your first glimpse of the classic cars heading through the town centre. Take in the sights and sounds of Brescia and wander amongst the cars as they park up after the official ceremonies that bring to a close the Scrutineering that happens in the central square. As the cars return to their pre-race overnight parking, we will get together for an evening at a traditional restaurant in Brescia centre. DAY FOUR Thursday. As the race heads South to Rome, it s time for another highlight of your trip, the chance for you to drive a Ferrari through the streets of Maranello followed by lunch in the legendary Cavallino restaurant and then a private guided tour of the Ferrari Museum. After all that scarlet excitement we have an early dinner booked this evening on the terrace of a converted Italian farmhouse set in the hills around Modena. DAY FIVE Friday. The race will now be heading North back through Italy to Bologna. This morning we visit the world s finest private Maserati collection.
