2 Tuscany Chianti Region - Chianti offers a unique landscape, with green, gentle hills covered with wide fields of vineyards and olive groves, small stone villages, characteristic parishes and countryside homes in stone. The Chianti landscapes are so beautiful and particular that they inspire many photographs which then become postcards and calendars distributed across the globe. Rome Linger at a sidewalk café in the early evening and take in the pageant: the taste of your cappuccino, the kiss of warm air, the immaculately attired locals just getting their evenings started. Rome is nicknamed the Eternal City, and rightly so, for the array of icons the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and for the role it played shaping the Western world. But there is perhaps a less-recognized genius in the way the city embraces the sensual side of life, as if to acknowledge there's no eternity like the present. Naples - There is the docile bay; the peaceful cypress-tufted islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri; and the muscular city of Naples itself. And over it all there looms Mount Vesuvius: volcano, national park, and a persistent corrective to any hubris. Cruise to see the only active volcano on the European mainland, which blew in A.D. 79 and buried the city of Pompeii. Naples itself is mere enduring greatness. One of the chief commercial cities of Europe, highlights include Castel dell'ovo, Castelnuovo and national museums dedicated to art and archaeology. The city center has been designated a World Heritage Site, and the surrounding areas are dotted with cultural and historical treasures, not the least of which are the restored ruins of Pompeii. Palermo - Traces of Roman, Arab and Norman influences mix here. Highlights: the Norman Palace with its golden Byzantine mosaics. Cagliari - Traces of ancient settlements are found all over the island of Sardinia: neolithic ruins at Nora; Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman relics near Cagliari; and Arab, Genoese and Iberian heritage evident in architecture dating back to the Middle Ages. Cagliari, the capital, climbs a hillside overlooking the aptly named Gulf of Angels. In the old Castello Quarter, the streets are narrow and shaded and the buildings are old, but the beaches of Sardinia are wide and expansive, basking in the Mediterranean sun. Gibraltar - Geography claims it for Iberia, geology for the Jurassic, mythology for Hercules, and geopolitics for Great Britain. Gibraltar is a peninsula that juts off the southern end of Iberia and whose dominant feature is a 1,398-foot-high, cave-riddled hunk of limestone that's played a dominant role in the Western psyche for millennia. While it is today a British overseas territory, its culture also pulls from Andalusia, Portugal, Malta, Morocco, and India. But on a cruise journey, it's the Rock you want. The upper slopes are covered in olive, pine and bouquets of the endemic Gibraltar candytuft. The Barbary apes (macaques, really) cavort through it all, popular despite their tendency toward thievery. Cadiz (Seville) - The Moorish palace started as a fort. One of the largest Roman Catholic Cathedrals in the world used to be a mosque. The Renaissance archive contains the annals of the Spanish in the New World. All three the Alcazar, the Seville Cathedral, and the Archivo de Indias are UNESCO World Heritage sites. All three were built in the Mudejar style, a Muslim aesthetic that developed under Christian rule. Cruise guests can see what alchemy can happen when cultures intertwine. Walk the narrow lanes of the Jewish Quarter, the expanse of the Plaza de Espana, or the halls of the Museo de Bellas Artes. Then stop for tapas. Malaga - Every city is a palimpsest, but Malaga takes it to an extreme. The walls of its Phoenician ur-city are visible in the basement of the Picasso Museum. The best-preserved Moorish citadel in Spain is located next to the Roman theater, which was rediscovered in The nearby caverns of Nerja provided refuge to humans 30,000 years ago and modern tourists alight along the Costa Del Sol during the eight-month-long summer season. Cruise guests can visit the old castles, the museums, and the beaches. Or chew some scenery with a Malaga sweet wine and a plate of tapas. Cartagena - Cartagena offers a rich cultural legacy from the days of its Roman, Muslim and Arabic rule. Barcelona - Barcelona effuses the ancient, the modernist, and the Gaudi. Legend has it the city was founded by Hercules 400 years before the founding of Rome. Whatever the truth, the city today is a global capital of commerce, fashion, culture, and sunshine (the city gets about 300 days of it a year). Cruise visitors should start with a walk down Las Ramblas, the glorious tree-shaded thoroughfare at the heart of the city. Claim a patch of sand on one of the city beaches. But, most of all, see what visionary architect Antoni Gaudi wrought. Seven of his creations have been honored as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including La Sagrada Familia, the Park Guell, and Casa Mila. Katakolon - Gateway to Olympus, site of the original Olympic Stadium and host to some games of the 2004 Olympiad. Athens - There's no escaping the Parthenon. The temple to Athena looms over Athens from its perch atop the Acropolis, and it looms across the Western imagination as an icon of art and civilization. You may as well give in and start your cruise visit there. And why not? Completed in 438 B.C., the temple still astounds as the flowering of Greek art and architecture. When you come down off the hill, be sure to visit the Ancient Agora, Syntagma Square, the National Archaeological Museum, and the city's infinite impromptu byways. As you sample some souvlaki or a frappe, take a glance back up the hill from time to time and give the goddess her due. Istanbul - Cross the Galata Bridge to the old city, past the Süleymaniye Mosque, whose 174-foot dome was once the highest in the Ottoman Empire. Pass the ancient city walls, built by Constantine, and beneath the epic Roman aqueduct. You've come for spice; for the scent of curry, saffron, and myrrh; for a taste of something ancient. Ephesus - Ephesus is a beautiful ghost. In the first century B.C., the city was one of the largest cities in the world. It's Great Theater sat 24,000 people. Its Temple of Artemis was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The Library of Celsus was perhaps the finest in creation. Today, the Great Theater is a ruin, the temple is gone, and the library is a shell, open to the sky. Still, your cruise excursion will reveal glory in the old stones. Ephesus has one of the largest collections of ruins in the eastern Mediterranean. Prime among them is the library, whose two-story façade still stands, and the house said to be the last residence of Mary, mother of Jesus. Rhodes - Rhodes (the Greek island) shines green and white in the blue of eastern Aegean. Just 11 miles from Turkey, Rhodes is strewn with small towns, literally. Notable among them is Lindos, with its stunning Acropolis. Rhodes (the city) is located at the northeastern tip of the island and was merely one of the most glorious cities of antiquity. The Colossus of Rhodes stood more than 100 feet high at the edge of the harbor and was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world before an earthquake toppled it in 226 B.C. Of the statue, nothing remains, but Rhodes Old Town, a World Heritage Site, endures as one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and a place of pilgrimage for cruise travelers. Iraklion - If something seems familiar about the place, it may be because Crete's capital city is nearing its 10th millennia of human habitation and seems to always have been with us. If, on your cruise, something seems more than familiar, it may be because those names you already know -- Knossos, minotaur, labyrinth, Theseus, Ariadne, Daedalus -- draw from places deep in our archetypal well. Empires come and go, but the city abides, all alleyways, blue sea, and sunshine. Come take a walk down streets you know, even if you've never been.
3 Radda in Chianti is a beautiful medieval town enclosed in large defensive walls. Located up on a hill between the valleys of Arbia and Pesa, it has ancient origins. It has been inhabited since the 9th century and was already mentioned in a document from San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form "an unforgettable skyline". Greve in Chianti is often considered the entrance gate into the Chianti region since it is the first major town you reach as you head south of Florence toward Siena. It is a small town, not lying at the top of a hill but its interestingly shaped main square is the perfect location from which to wander around, enjoy an espresso, gelato cone or glass of wine on a stop here on your trip through Chianti Siena is likely Italy's loveliest medieval city. Siena's heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo, known worldwide for the famous Palio run here, a horse race run around the piazza two times every summer. Movie audiences worldwide can see Siena and the Palio in the James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. Date Itinerary at a Glance Arrive Depart Overnight flight to Rome. Sat. Mar. 26 Rome.
