3 A Mediterranean Mélange across the Millennia The fabled islands and coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea from southeast Spain to southwest Italy are so magnificent that the ancient Greeks associated them with their gods, goddesses and heroes of mythology. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, built a beautiful palace on the island of Sicily, where Dionysus, the god of wine, discovered grapes to harvest, and the inhabitants of Sardinia claimed to be descendants of Hercules, heroic son of Zeus. During this expansive itinerary, experience firsthand a unique blend of the many cultures that coexist in this extraordinary Mediterranean region. The prosperous, seafaring ports that were built, conquered and reconquered by Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish civilizations formed the beginnings of the Western World on these shores, and today retain the art, culture, architecture, literature, cuisine, philosophy and religious influence of their former empires that make them so endlessly captivating. Málaga, Spain The beautiful town of Málaga, on Spain s southern coastline, remains a thriving port city of Andalusia, just as it was when the Phoenicians settled here in 770 B.C. Under rule of the Roman Empire in 238 B.C., and eventually taken over by the Moors, Málaga was shaped by the influences of each of these disparate empires into the distinct city of varied architecture, religions, customs and culture it is today. Cartagena Founded in 223 B.C. on the shores of a natural harbour, ancient Cartagena became a strategically important port city for trade and economic purposes as it was in close proximity to a wealth of gold and silver mines. The Romans captured it in 209 B.C., and Carthago Nova (New Carthage), remained a Roman outpost throughout the reign of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus until it was conquered by the Visigoths in A.D. 425, subsequently falling to Byzantine and Moorish rule, and finally to the Castilians. See the ruins of the medieval Castillo de la Concepción, the city s imposing hilltop fortress, and the impressive Roman Theatre of Carthago Nova, a 6000-seat amphitheatre built at the end of the second century B.C. Admire Cartagena s ancient streets filled with early architecture and remnants of the Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish periods, alongside stunning Art Nouveau buildings constructed in the early 20 th century. Nora, Sardinia, Italy On the storied island of Sardinia, enjoy an excursion near the Italian village of Cagliari, where you will visit the remarkable archaeological site of Nora. According to legend, the town was founded by Norax, the mythological hero son of the Greek god Hermes. Originally a Phoenician trading post, later a Punic settlement and finally a Roman town, Nora s important collection of ancient Punic and Roman ruins features patrician villas decorated with beautiful mosaic floors and the grand theatre that is still in use today. Cover Photo: The Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a captivating combination of exceptional grandeur and mesmerizing drama with steep coastal mountains, charming towns and lush forests.
