North Tyneside industrial pioneers Introduction North Tyneside has a rich and varied history dating back 2,000 years to Roman times. From those early days of the Roman occupation through to the North Tyneside we know today, there have been many changes. The Industrial Revolution changed our lives and much of the pioneering work that helped drive forward socio-economic and cultural change on such a large scale had it s origins in North Tyneside. From the ground-breaking development of the steam engine to the heyday of the shipping industry, our story is fascinating.

1 Wallsend Colliery B Pit Buddle Street, Wallsend, NE28 6HR Wallsend Colliery B Pit was sunk in 1778, reaching coal in Buddle Street is named after John Buddle, a renowned mining engineer and a viewer (manager) of the Wallsend Colliery. Wallsend coal was considered to be some of the finest quality coal in the world and was shipped off to the wealthy in London. The mine suffered badly from flooding and as a result production declined in the 1830s. The last B Pit structures were demolished in the 1850s; however, the shaft remained open for ventilation until The site was excavated in 1997 and the remains of the pit can be seen to the north of Buddle Street opposite Segedunum Roman Fort. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums 2 Swan Hunter shipyard Station Road, Wallsend, NE28 6EQ The world famous Swan Hunter shipyard dates from 1880, however shipbuilding on the site began under other shipbuilders in Over the course of 130 years some 1,600 vessels of all shapes and sizes, including around 400 naval vessels were built. The RMS Mauretania, an ocean liner, held the prestigious Blue Ribband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1907, holding that record for 22 years. The ship was named after the Roman province of Mauretania in North Africa, perhaps inspired by the proximity of the shipyard to Segedunum. The oil tanker Esso Northumbria was launched in 1969 and was over 1,100 feet long and weighed in excess of 250,000 tonnes. When the vessel was built it was so big that it blocked out sunlight to the neighbouring streets so Swan Hunter contributed to resident s electricity bills. With a decline in shipbuilding, largely due to increased competition from the Far East, the cranes were sold to a shipyard in India in Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

3 Segedunum - Strong Place Buddle Street, Wallsend, NE28 6HR Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum, though largely focussing on the Roman occupation, also has a gallery Strong Place that looks at how the landscape at Segedunum has unfolded over nearly 2,000 years from Roman times to open farmland and the industrial age. The Roman occupation brought a number of advanced means of living to Britain, long before the Industrial Revolution, including aqueducts, bridges and roads. The excavated fort site once had colliery buildings on the land in the 1800s. Visual displays, interactive exhibits and audio points tell a fascinating story. Segedunum is part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums 4 Wallsend Colliery C Pit Wallsend Park, NE28 6QY south of tennis courts (postcode of corner of Kings Road South and North Road) The colliery experienced a number of explosions which resulted in many fatalities including: 4th December 1785 (6 deaths) 9th April 1786 (6 deaths) 4th October 1790 (7 deaths) 25th September 1799 (13 deaths) 20th September 1803 (13 deaths) 23rd October 1821 (52 deaths) 18th June 1835 (102 deaths) 19th December 1838 (11 deaths) 9th August 1925 (5 deaths) A memorial to the 102 lives lost on 18th June 1835 was erected in The number of explosions and deaths demonstrates how dangerous mining was as a profession before improvements in safety and legislation in the work place were introduced. John Buddle: Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

5 Stephenson Railway Museum Middle Engine Lane, North Shields, NE29 8DX The Stephenson Railway Museum is managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on behalf of North Tyneside Council. It is named after George Stephenson, a local civil and mechanical engineer who built the first public railway line in the world to use steam locomotives. He is known as the Father of the Railways. Billy, a forerunner of the worldfamous Rocket is on display. Exhibits date from the 1820s through to the 1980s and from steam engines to electric and diesel engines. There is also an exhibition that looks at the history of electric transport in Tyneside in the 1900s and the impact of the coal industry in the region. Visitors can enjoy a steam train ride on selected dates and times. 6 Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels Coach Open North Shields, NE28 0PD The Thomas Burt MP : Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1946 and constructed by Charles Brand & Son Ltd at a cost of 833,000. Opened on 24th July 1951 the scheme was Tyneside s contribution to the Festival of Britain. The festival was staged to give the British people a sense of recovery and progress in the post war years. The two tunnels contain the first purpose-built cycle tunnel in the UK and run parallel under the River Tyne between Howdon in North Tyneside and Jarrow in South Tyneside. The four woodenstep escalators were, at the time of construction, the longest single-rise escalators in the world. In 2000 the tunnels were awarded Grade II Listed Building status to recognise their historic significance. They are used by around 20,000 people per month. 5 7 Albert Edward Dock Coble Dene, North Shields, NE29 6DU Work on a new dock to meet the needs for incoming goods to the River Tyne and to increase coal shipping facilities on the north side of the river began in the late 1870s. Coble Dene Dock was completed in 1873 and opened in 1884 by the Prince and Princess of Wales and was renamed the Albert Edward Dock in honour of the Prince. The dock covers an area of acres and was designed to accommodate ships up to 450 feet long. Its facilities included 20 steam and hydraulic cranes, a warehouse and a timber yard. The lock and lock gates are Grade II Listed. Today the dock is home to the Royal Quays Marina which has 350 sheltered and secured pontoon berths and a full range of marina facilities. Northumbria Quay, opposite, welcomes cruise vessels and visiting naval ships to the River Tyne. North Tyneside Libraries 8 North Shields ferry landing New Quay, North Shields, NE29 6LQ Historical records show that a ferry service existed between North Shields and South Shields as long ago as It played an important role in that it allowed trading and transport of goods between both settlements. In 1828 a Charter, which still exists today, was granted to the North Shields Ferry Company. One of the current ferries The Pride of the Tyne was built at Swan Hunter shipyard. Today, the ferry service is operated by Nexus, who also operate the Tyne & Wear Metro. North Shields takes its name from the shiels (or shielings) fisherman s huts that appeared on the north of the riverbank when the Fish Quay developed. North Tyneside Libraries

9 Hartley Pit Disaster Memorial St Alban s Churchyard, Earsdon, NE25 9JT New Hartley Colliery witnessed one of the UK s worst ever mining disasters on 16th January A huge beam used to de-water the mine broke without warning and one end plunged into the shaft of the pit. In doing so it created a pile of debris which entombed the miners preventing a rescue. 204 men and boys suffocated and died. Hartley Pit was a single shaft pit which prevented any rescue. The disaster led to a change in the law, requiring all collieries to operate with two shafts. The names and ages of all who lost their lives in the disaster are on the memorial in St Alban s Churchyard. To commemorate the 150th anniversary in 2012, a civic service was held in St Alban s Church and a special musical work was commissioned. It premiered at the Playhouse Whitley Bay in a concert performed by Grimethorpe Colliery Band. 10 Rising Sun Rising Sun Country Park, Benton, NE12 9SS (postcode of Countryside Centre) Peter Dixon Photography The 1857 OS map shows nine pits in the area; however the Rising Sun which opened later was the largest and most modern pit. A brickworks on the site used local clay. The colliery first produced coal in 1908 and there was always the danger of an explosion as the coal was gassy and sulphurous. The pit was one of the largest in Europe and a series of tunnels stretched around 60 miles. By 1931 it employed 2,000 men and in 1961 produced 475,871 tonnes of coal. The pit finally closed in 1969 with the discovery of natural gas. The closure put 1,180 men and 26 pit ponies out of work. The Rising Sun is now a Green Flag award-winning park. The 400 acre site now has a visitor centre, an organic farm as well as grassland, woodland and wetland habitats with an extensive range of wildlife. North Tyneside Libraries

11 Dial Cottage Great Lime Road, Forest Hall, NE12 7DQ Dial Cottage was the home of the Father of the Railways, George Stephenson and his engineer son Robert who lived there in the early part of the 19th Century. George Stephenson designed his first locomotive, Blucher, in 1814 in the colliery workshop behind the cottage. Stephenson s Rocket was considered to be the template for most steam engines in the world for the next 150 years. As well as locomotion design, George Stephenson was also a pioneer in mining safety and bridge design. His son Robert was a leading engineer and established the first locomotive works in the world in Forth Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He also constructed a number of well-known bridges to carry railways including the High Level Bridge, Newcastle-upon-Tyne which to this day carries rail traffic on the upper deck and road traffic on the lower deck. Dial Cottage is a Grade II Listed Building and takes its name from the sundial above the door which was made by George Stephenson and can be seen in the photograph below. North Tyneside Libraries

12 Tyne Tunnels The original Tyne Tunnel opened in 1967 providing a road connection between North Tyneside and South Tyneside underneath the River Tyne. The tunnel is a mile in length and was built to handle 25,000 cars a day. The original toll for cars was 2s 6d (12 ½p today). Inevitably road traffic increased and the need for a second tunnel became apparent with usage forecast to reach 43,000 vehicles per day by Construction of the second tunnel began in the Spring of 2008, and the original one was subsequently refurbished. In November 2011 both tunnels were open, each carrying traffic in a different direction. HM Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new tunnel in July 2012 in her Diamond Jubilee year, having opened the original one 45 years earlier. Three former marine buoys are located at the north entrance to the tunnels with iconic images of North Tyneside as a welcome to visitors. Waggonways Copyright David Dixon and licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence The waggonways are a unique series of paths that crisscross North Tyneside and were built to solve the problem of transporting coal from the mines to the river. Originally built for horse drawn vehicles, they later carried steam locomotives. The waggonways date from the 19th Century and extend over 30 miles throughout the borough. The network was rejuvenated a few years ago and is now accessible by foot and cycle and is used both as a means of recreation and a traffic free way of travelling around North Tyneside.
