Ervi carried the bazooka ad Erwi carried the ammuitio. The Davis brothers arrived i Le Havre i Jauary 1945, ad moved across Frace to the Moselle River. I their first combat the brothers crossed the Moselle i row boats at 2:00 i the morig: The war became real whe they saw a flare from the Germas ad the shootig commeced. The brothers were separated for a few hours durig the battle, but they reuited for the push to the Rhie River. Resistace was light util they reached the river. Davis s compay commader was killed by a siper, ad the Davis brothers fired their bazooka at the eemy for the first time after the crossig. Ervi placed the roud directly i the widow of a buildig 150 yards away a perfect shot ad Ervi remembered it as his best shot of the war. The twis reached the Ohrdorf Cocetratio Camp a few weeks later. Istructed to blast the metal doors of the camp, Ervi fired the bazooka, but the door held firm. After the door was fially removed, the Davis brothers witessed the horrors of the camp, ad recoutig the experiece is still difficult. Erwi retured to Normady i Jue 2016, but his goal of oce agai crossig the Rhie remaied ufulfilled. The Rhie was the last atural obstacle o the road to Berli, ad British Field Marshall Berard Motgomery believed that a hasty crossig without adequate plaig ad preparatio could leave uits isolated ad waste material. He advised America commaders ad subordiates to wait for his plaed Operatio Pluder. Motgomery s pla ivolved 1.2 millio me, ad it coordiated airbore drops i support of his ivasio. His crossig would be the mai drive o the road to Berli ad became the ext chapter i a series of rivalries betwee Geeral George S. Patto ad Motgomery. For Patto, crossig the Rhie was ot just a way to defeat Germay, it was a race to beat Motgomery ad the British to the other side. Begiig with the ivasio of Sicily i 1943, Patto ad Motgomery were uofficial rivals i races to major objectives. O August 17, 1943, Patto beat Motgomery s forces to Messia by a few hours, edig the Sicilia campaig. Whe the British arrived i Messia, GIs asked, Where you tourists bee? I Normady, Patto isisted o closig the Falaise Gap, but Bradley ordered him to halt ad protect the lies he held, ad Motgomery was able to give the message that the gap was sealed. The first crossig of the last major obstacle o the Road to Berli meat the glory of beatig the Germas i their homelad, ad Patto was determied to make it across first. O March 22, the day before Motgomery s Operatio Pluder would cross the Rhie to the orth, Patto eyed a opportuity to cross the Rhie by boat. We re goig to cross the Rhie ad we re goig to do it before I m a day older, he declared. At 10:30 pm, assault boats carried the first soldiers from the 5th Ifatry Divisio across. By morig, ferries ad floatig bridges brought taks ad more soldiers across. O March 24, Patto crossed by potoo bridge, makig a poit to ote i his diary that he uriated i the Rhie, ad picked up some dirt o the other side. Reportig his achievemet, Patto boasted to headquarters, you ca tell the world Third Army made it before Moty. Oce across the river, Patto pushed forward, but was distracted by the prospect of freeig his so-i-law from a priso camp ear Hammelburg. The operatio failed, but with the war earig its ed, his superiors did ot issue ay official public rebukes, though Eisehower referred to it as Patto s latest crackpot actios. M-43 Field Jacket ad Trousers Gift of James Preiger, ad Douglas C-47 Skytrai 096 The purchase ad restoratio of the C-47 was made possible through a gift from Paul Hilliard. The Natioal WWII Museum Ic., The Natioal WWII Museum s C-47, serial umber , was built at the Douglas Aircraft Maufacturig plat i Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. 096 was delivered to the US Army o April 8, 1944, at which time it was assiged to the 806th Army Air Force Base Uit at Baer Field, Idiaa. The followig moth 096 was assiged to the 8th Air Force ad trasferred to the Europea theater of operatios. Immediately after arrivig i Eglad o May 28, 1944, the aircraft was trasferred to the 9th Air Force. Oe week after arrivig i Eglad, 096 carried pathfiders from the 82d Airbore Divisio ito the Normady ivasio. The plae the dropped pathfiders from the 101st Airbore Divisio ito Hollad durig Operatio MARKET-GARDEN. 096 also flew with the rest of its group to drop supplies to the 101st i Bastoge durig the Battle of the Bulge. Durig this missio, 096 sustaied mior damage from Germa groud fire, but the plae was repaired ad placed back i service i a matter of days. The plae s fial combat missio occurred o March 24, 1945, whe it dropped paratroopers from the 17th Airbore Divisio across the Rhie River durig Operatio VARSITY. After the war, 096 participated i the Berli Airlift before beig trasferred to the Fiish Air Force. After decades of service as both a military ad civilia trasport plae, ad a reprisal of its participatio i MARKET-GARDEN for the movie A Bridge Too Far, 096 became a part of The Natioal WWII Museum s collectio i It is o permaet exhibit i the Louisiaa Memorial Pavilio. Siged Nazi Flag Gift of Richard Root, Ever sice the Normady ladigs i Jue 1944, America s primary objective had bee to push across the Rhie River ad ito Germay. This objective was accomplished o March 7, 1945, whe elemets of the 9th Armored Divisio discovered a udamaged bridge at Remage, Germay. Despite Germa attempts to destroy the bridge, the 9th Armored was able to cross ad establish a beachhead i Germay. Te days after the bridge s capture it collapsed, but by that time other crossigs had bee established across the Rhie. This flag was siged by members of B Compay, 14th Tak Battalio, 9th Armored Divisio, some of whom assisted i the iitial capture of the bridge. Flight officer James Preiger copiloted his glider durig the ivasio of Normady but was wouded by shrapel o Jue 7, He spet six weeks i a Army hospital before returig to his squadro. Preiger flew the lead glider o his secod ad fial combat missio o March 24, 1945, as part of Operatio VARSITY, the airbore assault across the Rhie River. For over two years, the Frak family hid i a locatio called the Secret Aex, where Ae Frak kept a diary of her thoughts ad experieces. 8 HP Operatio VARSITY, combied with the groud offesive Operatio PLUNDER, was a massive, direct strike across the Rhie River. O March 24, 1945, 14,000 paratroopers desceded east of the Rhie River betwee the tows of Rees ad Wessel. The eveig before, groud forces crossed temporary bridges i the same sector. However, VARSITY would ot be the first crossig. Circumstaces elsewhere alog the Rhie allowed two other major crossigs i the weeks prior at Remage ad Oppeheim. VARSITY succeeded i creatig a broad frot across the Rhie, ad agai showed the potetial dagers ad limitatios of large airbore drops. Plaed by Field Marshal Berard Motgomery, VARSITY was a series of firsts. It was the first combat jump for the US 17th Airbore Divisio, ad it marked the first airbore assault across the Rhie. The C-46 Commado joied the C-47 Skytrai i ferryig paratroopers to their drop zoes. The C-46 was larger, held twice as may paratroopers, ad it featured twi jump doors i the rear. But the performace of the larger aircraft was dubious. Its larger size combied with the low altitude ad slow speeds required for the drops made it a ivitig target. Whe hit ear a fuel tak, gasolie would pass through heated areas, causig may of the plaes to catch fire. Because of the may dagers, the C-46 cotiued its use as a cargo plae, but Geeral Matthew Ridgway restricted their use i airbore drops. While passig over the Rhie, the me could see the crossigs takig place below them. Oce o the groud, progress was rapid, but the victories were hard-wo. Casualties mouted for the British 6th ad US 17th Airbore Divisios. I total, the divisios lost early 3,000 me, icludig 460 killed. Still, by the ed of the day o March 24, the bridgehead across the Rhie exteded 25 miles i legth ad had peetrated seve miles beyod the river. Motgomery s strike across the Rhie had succeeded, though ot at the first crossig as origially iteded. With growig umbers of Allied troops across the Rhie, Germay s fial defeat was earig. With Germay s surreder loomig, Operatio VARSITY was the last airbore drop of World War II. Moffatt Burriss wet from Clemso graduate ad first-year physics teacher to a battle-hardeed paratrooper who fought through Sicily, Azio, Nijmege, ad the Ardees with the 3rd Battalio, 504th Parachute Ifatry Regimet of the 82d Airbore Divisio. At Fort Beig i 1942, Burris voluteered for the paratroopers, lured i part by the extra pay ad i part by a remark from a former ROTC classmate who claimed that paratroopers ever have to dig a foxhole ad live i it for three moths. He would ed the war as a hero of Operatio MARKET-GARDEN ad oe of oly a few Americas to cross the Elbe River before the Germa surreder. Burriss participated i the fightig i Azio i 1943 with the 504th. The tough fightig ad determied Germa defeders alog with the witer weather i the moutais took its toll o the regimet, ad it was held i reserve durig D-Day. Several times, Burriss ad the 504th atteded briefigs o jumps to support Patto s advace across Frace, but each time the operatios were cacelled because Patto had overru the drop zoe ahead of schedule. The boats had plywood bottoms ad gree cavas sides. Burriss thought that they would t make it across a swimmig pool. They were also short o paddles. Sixtee me i each boat would oly have five or six paddles betwee them. They would have to do, ad the me would use their rifle butts as paddles. The trip across was a ightmare.
