Spend time at the Cathedral of Burgos, a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cathedral, the third largest church in Spain, offers such masterpieces as the filigree work in the spires of the towers; the starry dome; the choir; the sarcophagi and the golden staircase. Tonight you may wish to partake in a candlelight procession.** (B, D) Day 7: Saturday, September 15, 2018 Lourdes After morning Mass,* enjoy a walking tour of Lourdes, visiting the places associated with the life of St. Bernadette: the Boly Mill" (site of the birthplace of St. Bernadette), the "Cachot," and the parish church housing the baptismal font of St. Bernadette. Later, at leisure, explore the town's rich historical and natural heritage and be immersed in the atmosphere that reigned during the apparitions and the spirit of brotherhood that is still present today. 5 travel to Barcelona, one of Europe's most fascinating cities. (B) Day 9: Monday, September 17, 2018 Barcelona Celebrate Mass* at La Sagrada Familia (crypt), followed by a visit to the elaborate, expansive basilica. Once completed, Gaudi's masterpiece will have 18 towers: 12 dedicated to the apostles, four to the evangelists, one to Jesus and another to Mary. Later, get to know more of the city s treasures including views of Antonio Gaudi s Mila House (UNESCO), the Columbus Monument and Parc de Montjuic. This afternoon you will enjoy a leisurely drive through picturesque villages bringing you to majestic Montserrat Mountain, soaring 4,320 feet above sea level. 7 Experience It! Burgos, Land of Cathedrals Burgos was founded in 884 and its historical heritage is immediately evident. Admittedly, its main sites are ecclesiastical, most notably the cathedral itself, but it is an atmospheric place and has a rare grandeur and medieval northern Castilian ambience. The Cathedral of Burgos, begun in 1221 and completed in 1567, is among the most admired of its kind worldwide. Especially remarkable are its south portal, the Puerta del Sarmental, considered the best example of Gothic sculpture of its century. The Cathedral of Burgos is modeled after the French Cathedral of Bourges and reflects the Gothic style made popular in Spain by the Cistercian Order.
