5 WORLD WAR I SITES The First World War left a idelible impact o the area ow kow as Fladers Fields, trasformig the regio ito oe of the most thought-provokig ad ispiratioal war ladscapes i the world. I 1914, local farmers witessed their fields turig ito a battlegroud for oe of the most terrible coflicts i huma history. Over 600,000 me ad wome died o Belgia soil durig the First World War. The military cemeteries that dot these same fields are a sad remider of the tragic cost of this war to ed all wars. British ad Commowealth soldiers passed through the city of Ypres o their way to the battlefields alog the Ypres Saliet. Reduced to rubble by costat bombardmet, the tow came to symbolise the meaigless slaughter of the Great War. After the war, Ypres rose like a phoeix from its ashes, rebuilt as a almost perfect copy of the medieval city that had bee destroyed durig the fightig. The famous Mei Gate stads at oe etrace to the city; a Commowealth War Graves Commissio Memorial was placed here i 1927 iscribed with the ames of more tha 54,000 soldiers who died before 16 August 1917 ad have o kow grave. Hudreds of thousads of soldiers passed through the gate o the way to the frot, may of them ever to retur. NEW IRISH FARM CEMETERY The New Irish Farm Cemetery opeed at the outbreak of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchedaele). It was amed after a earby farm. 7 HILL 60 & CATERPILLAR CRATER Hill 60 was captured by the 11th Battalio West Yorkshire Regimet o 7 Jue 1917 durig the Battle of Messies, whe two huge mies were blow: oe o the hill itself, with a charge of more tha 53,000 lbs, was blow by the 1st Australia Tuellig Compay, whose memorial is o Hill 60. They also blew the eighbourig Caterpillar Crater (width 80m, depth 15m). Zwarteleestraat, Zillebeke SAINT CHARLES DE POTYZE The largest Frech military cemetery i Belgium cotais 4,200 graves, icludig 69 Islamic tombs. A Breto Pieta by the Sculptor J. Util the start of WWI, the t Hooghe castle stood o top of the t Hooghe hill i Zillebeke. Durig the war, the castle that served as the British HQ, was totally destroyed. I 1915, the British blew up a umber of tuels, which created a large crater to the orth of the castle. Durig the 1920s, a chapel was built earby i memory of those killed i WWI. Maple Aveue the road that ow leads to this memorial oce formed part of the Caadia frot lie. After the war, the aveue was plated with maple trees as a mark of respect for the Caadia sacrifice. The memorial stads o top of the hill, surrouded by a park. It was the scee of fierce fightig i Jue 1916, but ow offers peaceful views of the spires of Ypres. Admissio There is o charge for admissio to the lad art istallatio ad the provicial park. The park ca be visited freely by idividual visitors ad small groups. Groups comig by coach are advised to book via the website. The etire walk takes about oe hour. However, from the car park you ca also walk directly to the observatio bridge via the paved path. I that case, the visit should take about 30 miutes. Naturally, every visitor wats to view the istallatio from the observatio bridge. O busy days, please limit your time o the bridge so that everyoe gets the opportuity to do so. Car park There is a large car park at the etrace to the park. There is space for cars ad coaches. O that date, uder the orders of Kig Albert I, the Vrijbos was retake from the Germas. There were may deaths o both sides, as the Belgia military cemetery remids us today. A major commemorative ceremoy i the morig will recall the battle. Also the villages of Zoebeke ad Passchedaele were liberated o 28 September by the Belgia troops. Passchedaele had become a sad symbol of total war i Fladers. May Belgia soldiers were weighed dow by a profoud sese of melacholy whe they set eyes o the devastated village. 10 November 1917 marks the day that Caadia troops eded the Battle of Passchedaele by capturig the ruis of the village. The Passchedaele Ceremoy commemorates the ed of the battle ad all casualties, commuities, ad coutries ivolved. The ceremoy starts with a subdued reflectio at the Crest Farm Caadia Memorial, followed by a torchlight parade alog the Caadalaa.
