2 10:00AM 11:30AM 12:00PM 1:30PM 3:00PM PICASSO MUSEUM Phone: The Museu Picasso houses one of the most extensive collections of artworks by the 20th-century Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. With 4,251 works exhibited by the painter, the museum has one of the most complete permanent collections of works. The museum is housed in five adjoining medieval palaces in Barcelona's La Ribera and is located on Montcada Street in the (Bank District) of Barcelona. It opened to the public on 9 March 1963, becoming the first museum dedicated to Picasso's work and the only one created during the artist's life. It has since been declared a museum of national interest by the Government of Catalonia. Highlights of the collection include two of his first major works, The First Communion (1896), and Science and Charity (1897). In particular, the Museu Picasso reveals Picasso's relationship with the city of Barcelona, a relationship that was shaped in his youth and adolescence, and continued until his death. Montcada, 15-23, Barcelona,, EL BORN El Born refers to the lower section of the La Ribera district, just below Carrer de la Princesa, and leading to Barceloneta. Named after the 19th century market on carrer del Comerc that dominates the area, this is one of the trendiest and most touristic districts in the old city. It is a popular place for expats and contains many art boutiques, bars and cafes. Carrer de Santa Maria, 4, Barcelona,, GOTHIC QUARTER The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district. The quarter was built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century, though several buildings date from medieval times. Remains of the squared Roman Wall can be seen around Tapineria and Sots-Tinent Navarro to the north, Avinguda de la Catedral and Placa Nova to the west and Carrer de la Palla to the south. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area too. The Barri Gotic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis. LA RAMBLA La Rambla is a street in central Barcelona, popular with tourists and locals alike. A tree-lined pedestrian mall, it stretches for 1.2 kilometres connecting Placa de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. La Rambla forms the boundary between the quarters of Barri Gotic, to the east, and El Raval, to the west. The Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca once said that La Rambla was "the only street in the world which I wish would never end." La Rambla, Barcelona,, TIME FOR SOUVENIR SHOPPING LUNCH AT LA BOQUERIA AT OWN EXPENSE MERCAT DE SANT JOSEP DE LA BOQUERIA The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, often simply referred to as La Boqueria is a large public market in the Ciutat Vella district and one of the city's prominent tourist landmarks. The first mention of La Boqueria dates back to Tables installed near the old city gate were mostly selling meat. The market was set up unofficially by the merchants who tried to sell some of their products before entering the city so that they can save on the taxes. The name La Boqueria came from the word "boc", which means goat, the most popular meat sold at the time. The open-air market gained popularity around the eighteenth century, along with La Rambla, and vendors from nearby towns started to come to try selling their goods as well. Works on a roof began in 1840 on St. Joseph's Day and even though the market gained its official status the same year, the roof wasn't finished until The market was also divided into different sectors based on the products of the merchants. The metal roof was the landmark of the modernization of the market. Not only the sanitation improved gradually after this, but the overall appearance of the market as well. The sellers offering their products there today are mostly fourth-generation La Boqueria merchants representing both the long traditions of the market and the new ideas that keep it exciting and dynamically evolving. At present, there is barely any food in Spain that cannot be found here; and in addition to the wide range of food products, it also offers artisan handicrafts and farmer's shops. 3 4:00PM 6:00PM 7:00PM 9:00PM PARC DE LA CIUTADELLA Located on the northeastern edge of Ciutat Vella district, The Parc de la Ciutadella is very idyllic and probably the greenest oasis in the megacity of Barcelona. It invites you to relax, to rebound and to go for long walks, as well as for a picnic. For decades following its creation in the mid-19th century, this park was the city's only green space. The 70-acre grounds include the city zoo, the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya, a small lake, museums, and a large fountain designed by Josep Fontsere. Passeig de Picasso, 21, Barcelona,, DEPART FOR DINNER OVERNIGHT IN BARCELONA Day 4 - Tuesday March 13 10:00AM 12:00PM DEPART FOR THE PARK PARK GUELL Park Guell is a public park system composed of gardens and architectonic elements. With urbanization in mind, Eusebi Guell assigned the design of the park to Antoni Gaudi, a renowned architect and the face of Catalan modernism. The park was built between 1900 and 1914 and was officially opened as a public park in In 1984, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site under "Works of Antoni Gaudi". Guell and Gaudi imagined the park to be an organized grouping of high-quality homes, decked out with all the latest technological advancements to ensure maximum comfort, finished off with an artistic touch. They also envisioned a community strongly influenced by symbolism, since, in the common elements of the park, they were trying to synthesize many of the political and religious ideals shared by patron and architect. Therefore, there are noticeable concepts originating from political Catalanism - especially in the entrance stairway where the Catalonian countries are represented - and from Catholicism - the Monumento al Calvario, originally designed to be a chapel. The mythological elements are also important. Apparently, Guell and Gaudi's conception of the park was also inspired by the Temple of Apollo of Delphi. Park Guell is the reflection of Gaudi's artistic abundance, which belongs to his naturalist phase (first decade of the 20th century). During this period, the architect perfected his personal style through inspiration from organic shapes. In the design of Park Guell, Gaudi unleashed all his architectonic genius and put to practice much of his innovative structural solutions that would become the symbol of his organic style and that would culminate in the creation of the Sagrada Familia., Barcelona,, DEPART FOR EIXAMPLE DISTRICT TIME FOR LUNCH NEAR SAGRADA FAMILIA

4 2:30PM 4:30PM 6:00PM 7:00PM 8:30PM 9:00PM LA SAGRADA FAMILIA The Basilica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, or La Sagrada Familia, is a large Roman Catholic church designed by Catalan Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi's work on the building is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica, as distinct from a cathedral, which must be the seat of a bishop. Construction of Sagrada Familia commenced in 1882 by architect Francisco Paula de Villar with Gaudi becoming involved in 1883 after Francisco resigned as the head architect. Taking over the project, Gaudi transformed it with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudi devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Sagrada Familia's construction progressed slowly, as it relied on private donations and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, only to resume sunteady progress in the 1950s. Construction passed the midpoint in 2010 with some of the project's greatest challenges remaining and an anticipated completion date of 2026, the centenary of Gaudi's death. The basilica has a long history of dividing the citizens of Barcelona: over the initial possibility it might compete with Barcelona's cathedral, over Gaudi's design itself, over the possibility that work after Gaudi's death disregarded his design, and the 2007 proposal to build an underground tunnel of Spain's high-speed rail link to France which could disturb its stability. Carrer de Mallorca, 401, Barcelona,, DEPART FOR CASA BATTLO CASA BATLLO Casa Batllo is a renowned building located in the centre of Barcelona and is one of Antoni Gaudi's masterpieces. A remodel of a previously built house, it was redesigned in 1904 by Gaudi and has been refurbished several times after that. The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos. or House of Bones, as it has a skeletal organic quality. Like everything Gaudi designed, it is only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, has unusual tracery, irregular oval windows, and flowing sculpted stone work. There are few straight lines, and much of the facade is decorated with a colourful mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur. A common theory about the building is that the rounded feature to the left of centre, terminating at the top in a turret and cross, represents the lance of Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia, which has been plunged into the back of the dragon. SEBASTIAN Phone: This cemetery, named after the martyr St. Sebastian, who is buried here, was originally called "ad catacumbas". According to the widely acknowledged explanation, the name signifies "near the hollows", because of the mines of tuff located in this area. The name was later used generally to indicate all subterranean Christian cemeteries. Another ancient name of the cemetery was "Apostolic Memorial" (Memoria Apostolorum). The name derives from the liturgical celebrations, dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, which took place here for a limited period in the first centuries. From the first century, the site had been intensely exploited and constructed upon. The caves and the tunnels of the mines were used for pagan and Christian rectangular wall tombs, as well smaller tombs used to house urns. At least two residential buildings were constructed above ground, especially noted for their interior wall painting decorations. Around the middle of the second century, a cave-in occurred, and in the square which was constructed above ground, three mausoleums were built, respectively belonging to Clodius Hermes, the Innocentores and "sub Ascia". Later this area was again covered over and a portico enclosed by a wall was built. Along the wall, hundreds of graffiti writings, dedicated to Peter and Paul, have been deciphered. Around the year 258, the religious celebrations commemorating the two Apostles were transferred to the site, and the emperor Constantine had a grandisose circiform basilica constructed in the honour of the Apostles. Meanwhile, the catacomb had been developing underground from the third century. As it is well known from archeological and literary sources, the martyrs Sebastian and Eutychius were buried here. The Church of Domine Quo Vadis is in the second mile of the road. Along or close to the part of the road closest to Rome, there are three catacombs of Roman and early Christian origin and one of Jewish origin. To this day the Via Appia contains the longest stretch of straight road in Europe, totalling 62 km. Pope Julius II founded the museums in the early 16th century. The Sistine Chapel with its ceiling decorated by Michelangelo and the Stanze della Segnatura decorated by Raphael are on the visitor route through the Vatican Museums. ST. PETER'S BASILICA St. Peter's Basilica is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". By Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, also according to tradition, the first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St. Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the time of Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica, replacing the Old St. Peter's Basilica of the 4th century, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November St. Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions. Because of its location in the Vatican, the Pope presides at a number of services throughout the year, drawing audiences of 15,000 to over 80,000 people, either within the Vatican Basilica, or in St. Peter's Square.
