CRUISE ITINERARY - An expedition with Silversea is unlike any other form of travel thrilling, awe-inspiring and humbling all at the same time. Below please find itinerary information about this adventurous expedition. KANGERLUSSUAQ, GREENLAND AUGUST 18, 2018 EMBARK Kangerlussuaq is a settlement in western Greenland in the Qeqqata municipality located at the head of the fjord of the same name (Danish: Søndre Strømfjord). It is Greenland's main air transport hub and the site of Greenland's largest commercial airport. The airport dates from American settlement during and after World War II, when the site was known as Bluie West- 8 and Sondrestrom Air Base. The Kangerlussuaq area is also home to Greenland's most diverse terrestrial fauna, including muskoxen, caribou, and gyrfalcons. The settlement's economy and population of 512 is almost entirely reliant on the airport and tourist industry. SISIMIUT, GREENLAND AUGUST 19, AM 2 PM Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Sisimiut is the northernmost town in Greenland where the port remains free of ice in the winter. Yet it is also the southernmost town where there is enough snow and ice to drive a dogsled in winter and spring. In Sisimiut, travelling by sled has been the primary means of winter transportation for centuries. In fact, the area has been inhabited for approximately 4,500 years. Modern Sisimiut is the largest business center in the north of Greenland, and is one of the fastest growing Greenlandic cities. Commercial fishing is the lead economy in the town s thriving industrial base. UUMMANNAQ, GREENLAND - AUGUST 20, PM 7 PM In the iceberg-laden waters surrounding the remote community of Uummannaq it is common to see whales. This area of Greenland is also known for its huge basalt mountains, and the small hunting and fishing village of Uummannaq rests at the foot of the heart-shaped Uummannaq Mountain, a name that translates to mean in the shape of a seal s heart. The town of over 1200 people has a granite church and the country s most northerly ferry terminal. The economy of Uummannaq revolves largely around the halibut/fish-processing factory. CROSSING DAVIS STRAIT AUGUST 21, 2018 While we're at sea, enjoy wine tastings, designer boutiques, language and dance classes. Take in a matinee movie, check the market or your in the Internet Point, slip away with a novel from the library to a sunny chaise or with a movie to your suite. Or just take in the sun pool side. The choice is yours. POND INLET, CANADA AUGUST 22, 2018 NOON 6 PM Located in northern Baffin Island, Pond Inlet is a small, predominantly Inuit community, with a population of roughly 1,500 inhabitants. In 1818, the British explorer John Ross named a bay in the vicinity after the English astronomer John Pond. Today Pond Inlet is considered one of Canada's "jewels of the North" thanks to several picturesque glaciers and mountain ranges nearby. Many archaeological sites of ancient Dorset and Thule peoples can be found near Pond Inlet. The Inuit hunted caribou, ringed and harp seals, fish, polar bears, walrus, narwhals, geese, ptarmigans and Arctic hares, long before European and American whalers came here to harvest bowhead whales. BUCHAN GULF, CANADA AUGUST 23, AM - 2 PM Buchan Gulf is a deep, elongated gash carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age that cuts 22 miles into the eastern shores of Baffin Island. The most striking feature in the Gulf ate impressive steep coastal cliffs and rock pinnacles. The cliffs are comprised of hard Precambrian metamorphic rock that rises as much as 2,000 feet from the sea. The conditions are perfect for nesting Northern Fulmars, and in fact, this area is one of the most important nesting sites for these birds in the world. European explorer William Baffin first ventured here in the 15th century to search for the Northwest Passage. SIMILIK NATIONAL PARK ON BYLOT ISLAND AUGUST 24, AM 12 NOON Sirmilik means "place of glaciers" in the Inuit language, which aptly describes the expansive landscape of glaciers, valleys and ice fields found on Bylot Island. The island, located off the northwest end of Baffin Island, has been a protected area and migratory bird reserve since 2001 because it is one of the most diverse areas in the arctic. Narwhals, beluga whales, walrus and seals can be found in the waters, while on land there are caribou, arctic fox, arctic hares, wolves and even an occasional polar bear. It is also a very important seabird colony. More than 70 species of birds have been recorded here, with about 40 species seasonally breeding on the island. CRUISE PEEL SOUND, CANADA AUGUST 25, AM 12:30 PM Peel Sound is a 30 mile-wide, 125 mile long channel separating Prince of Wales Island to the west and Somerset Island to the east. It was named in 1851 by explorer Vice Admiral Horatio Austin in honour of Sir Robert Peel, a former prime minister of Great Britain. Austin, however, was not the first person to sail through the sound. Five years earlier, in 1846, Sir John

Franklin had passed through the strait, just before his ships became icebound. Peel Sound is not always open. Several explorers, including Francis Leopold McClintock in 1858 and Allen Young in 1875, were unable to pass because it was blocked by ice. BEECHEY ISLAND, CANADA AUGUST 26, AM NOON Beechey Island is a small island off the southwest coast of Devon Island, separated by a narrow waterway called the Barrow Strait. Captain William Edward Parry was the first European to visit the island in His lieutenant, Frederick William Beechey, named the island after his father, the artist William Beechey ( ). Beechey Island played a significant role in the history of Arctic Exploration. During the winter of , Sir John Franklin and his men camped on the island as part of their ill-fated quest to find the Northwest Passage. Mummified remains of three of Franklin s crew were discovered, giving a better understanding of what happened before the disappearance of the expedition. RADSOCK BAY, DEVON ISLAND, CANADA AUGUST 27, :30 PM 8 PM Devon Island is Canada s sixth largest island and was first seen by Europeans in the early 17th century. The Thule culture had already settled there many centuries before, and left behind qarmat homes, made of rocks, whale bones, rock and sod walls, and skins for roofs that tell a story of over 800 years of human habitation. Other striking finds in this area are the many fossils of corals, crinoids and nautiloids that can be seen. DUNDAS HARBOUR, DEVON ISLAND, CANADA AUGUST 28, AM 3 PM Dundas Harbour is located in the southeast of Devon Island, Canada s 6th largest island. It is a forlorn but starkly beautiful spot. The island was first sighted by Europeans in 1616 by the English explorers Robert Bylot and William Baffin. But it did not appear on maps until after explorer William Edward Parry s exploration in the 1820 s. Parry named it after Devon, England. In the local Inuktitut language, the place is called Talluruti, which translates as a woman s chin with tattoos on it. This refers to the deep crevasses and streaks on Devon Island, which from a distance resemble traditional facial tattoos. On land there are remains of a Thule settlement dating back to 1000 A.D. ELLESMERE ISLAND, CANADA - AUGUST 29, AM 7 PM Ellesmere Island, 520 miles long and with an area of close to 80,000 square miles, is the third-largest island in Canada, the 10th-largest island in the world and the most northerly island in the Arctic Archipelago. It is very rugged with impressive mountains, vast ice fields, glaciers and a coastline deeply indented by fjords. Technically, it is a polar desert because it gets less than 3 inches of precipitation a year. Vegetation is sparse, but there are small herds of muskoxen and caribou that spread out on the Hazen Plateau. It was these land animals that attracted the Thule peoples to the area about BC. Later, Vikings on hunting and trading expeditions crossed from Greenland to Ellesmere. CROSS DAVIS STRAIT AUGUST 29, 2018 UNERNAVIK, GREENLAND AUGUST 30, PM - 7 PM More than 1,100 inhabitants presently make the small town of Upernavik their home. The name in Kalaallisut means Springtime Place and is also given to the island upon which the town rests. This small settlement was founded in 1772, and is the northernmost town in Greenland with a population of over 1,000. The Upernavik Museum is the oldest in Greenland and houses a collection of local art. In 1824, the Kingittorsuaq Runestone was found outside the town. In addition to the runic characters left here by Norsemen, probably from the late 13th century, Norse artifacts have been found in the area, likely marking the northern limit of Viking exploration. QEQERTARSUAQ, GREENLAND AUGUST 31, AM - 11PM During the morning Silver Cloud will ply the Disko Bay en route to our destination along Disko Island s east coast. Our exploration of the Disko Bay area will head to an area north of the village of Qeqertarsuaq, which is named after Disko Island s local name meaning large island. With more than 3,300 sq. miles Disko Island is Greenland s second-largest island. ILULISSAT, GREENLAND SEPTEMBER 1, M 11 PM Known as the birthplace of icebergs, the Ilulissat Icefjord produces nearly 20 million tons of ice each day. In fact, the word Ilulissat means icebergs in the Kalaallisut language. The town of Ilulissat is known for its long periods of calm and settled weather, but the climate tends to be cold due to its proximity to the fjord. Approximately 4,500 people live in Ilulissat, the third-largest town in Greenland after Nuuk and Sisimiut. Some people here estimate that there are nearly as many sled dogs as human beings living in the town that also boasts a local history museum located in the former home of Greenlandic folk hero and famed polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Commercial fishing is the lead economy in the town s thriving industrial base. NUUK (GODTHAB), GREENLAND SEPTEMBER 7, AM 6 PM Nuuk, meaning the cape, was Greenland s first town (1728). Started as a fort and later mission and trading post some 240 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, it is the current capital. Almost 30% of Greenland s population lives in the town. Not only does Nuuk have great natural beauty in its vicinity, but there are Inuit ruins, Hans Egede s home, the parliament, and the Church of our Saviour as well. The Greenlandic National Museum has an outstanding collection of Greenlandic traditional dresses, as well as the famous Qilakitsoq mummies. The Katuaq Cultural Center s building was inspired by the undulating Northern Lights and can house 10% of Nuuk s inhabitants. DAY AT SEA SEPTEMBER 8, 2018 While we're at sea, enjoy wine tastings, designer boutiques, language and dance classes. Take in a matinee movie, check the market or your in the Internet Point, slip away with a novel from the library to a sunny chaise or with a movie to your suite. Or just take in the sun pool side. The choice is yours. IQUALIT, CANADA SEPTEMBER 9, AM 4 PM Iqaluit is the capital of Canada s newest territory, Nunavut, which is Inuktitut for our land. The community is located at the head of Frobisher Bay, an inlet of the North Atlantic extending into southeastern Baffin Island. The Bay is so long that it was first taken to be the possible entrance of a Northwest Passage. In Iqaluit, the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum and the Nunavut Legislative Assembly Building both house incredible collections of Inuit artwork with interesting local prints for sale in the museum shop. LADY FRANKLIN ISLAND, CANADA SEPTEMBER 10, :30 AM 11 AM Named in honour of Sir John Franklin s widow, the lonely and uninhabited Lady Franklin Island lies off of Baffin Island s Hall Peninsula at the entrance to Cumberland Sound. The island is named for the wife of Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer

who died trying to discover the Northwest Passage. The geology of the island is striking with vertical cliffs of Archean rocks, likely to be some of the oldest stone in Canada. The waters around Lady Franklin Island offer an abundance seabirds, ducks, seals, and walrus. With a bit of luck it is possible to see Atlantic Puffins here and perhaps even a rare Sabine s Gull. MONUMENTAL ISLAND, CANADA SEPTEMBER 10, PM 7 PM Monumental Island in Davis Strait was named by Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall as a tribute to the memory of Sir John Franklin who died in his quest to find the Northwest Passage. The island is offshore of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago of the territory of Nunavut. Around the shoreline scores of Black Guillemots dive and fish for little Arctic cods and capelins. Successful birds fly off with a minnow grasped tightly in their beaks. On a far larger scale, it is possible to find groups of walruses with their impressive tusks along the shores of the island. However, the coup de grâce is to spot a polar bear s white silhouette against the dark background of the bedrock on Monumental Island. KIMMIRUT, LAKE HARBOUR, CANADA SEPTEMBER 11, 2018 NOON 7 PM Kimmirut is a traditional Inuit hamlet of 455 people, located on the southernmost peninsula of Baffin Island, just across the Hudson Strait from mainland Québec. It is the southernmost community on Baffin Island. The name, translating as the heel, is named for a distinctive rocky outcrop that looks exactly like the back of your foot! First contact with Europeans occurred around 1000 AD when Dorset and Norse sailors from Greenland interacted. Intermittent contact continued between the Thule people and the Vikings for another 500 years. CAPE DORSET, CANADA SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 NOON 7 PM Cape Dorset is a small Inuit hamlet located on Dorset Island, off the southern shore of Baffin Island. The traditional name for Cape Dorset is Kinngait (meaning "high mountain"), describing the Cape, which is actually a 800 foot mountain. This is a nature lovers paradise with breath-taking landscapes and an amazing abundance of arctic wildlife, such as migratory caribou, seabirds, whales, seals and walruses. Ancient native Thule (Dorset Culture) peoples lived in this area for three thousand years, and it is here where the first archaeological remains were found. Captain Luke Foxe, during his attempt to find the Northwest Passage in 1631, was the first European to land here. KANGIGSUJUAG, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 13, 2018 NOON 7 PM The small town of Kangigsujuag, on the south-eastern shore of Wakeham Bay, is home around 600 people. It is nestled in the hollow of a splendid valley surrounded by majestic mountains and a landscape of unspeakable beauty. "Kangiqsujuaq" means "the large bay" in Inuktitut, and Wakeham Bay was named after Captain William Wakeham who, in 1897, led an expedition to determine whether the viability of the Hudson Strait for safe navigation. Many businesses have been based here since its settlement by Europeans. In 1884, the Canadian Hudson's Bay Expedition established a commercial trading route to Europe through the Hudson Strait. Seal skin mitts and boots were traded for tobacco and gun powder. AKPATOK ISLAND, CANADA SEPTEMBER 14, AM 2 PM Akpatok Island is a remote spot near the northernmost limits of the Labrador Peninsula. Steep and sheer limestone cliffs jut out of icy waters. Encased in snow and surrounded with sea ice in the winter months, this uninhabited island lures huge amounts of wildlife, most notably the world s largest population of breeding Thick-billed Murres (known as Brünnich s Guillemots in Europe), estimated at well over a million birds. These auks flock to the bare cliffs of the island between June and September, and murres incubate their single pear-shaped egg on the cliff ledges. Glaucous Gulls can be seen soaring above looking for unguarded eggs and chicks, while Black Guillemots paddle around on the nearby sea. TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 15, AM NOON The Torngat Mountains National Park is situated on the eastern side of Labrador s northernmost point and features mountains sometimes described as the Eastern Rocky Mountains. The park covers an area of 9,700 km2 (over 6,000 mi2) and is dotted with remnants of several cirque glaciers. Saglek Fjord has an outstanding array of geological features and the steep cliffs provide some of the best exposures to the earth s geologic history. The name of the national park goes back to Torngarsoak, who was believed to control the life of sea animals and took the form of a huge polar bear. DAY AT SEA SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 TWILLINGATE, CANADA SEPTEMBER 17, 2018 NOON 5 PM Twillingate is the self-proclaimed Iceberg Capital of the World, although icebergs will be a more likely occurrence in the winter months. The community is home to the Prime Berth Museum, which is best described as a commercial fishing heritage site highlighting the glory salt fish days before the cod fishery moratorium in the mid-1980s. Several historic buildings packed with artifacts are located near the shoreline, in addition to an impressive skeleton of a Sei whale and the two giant racks of its baleen on display.

ST. JOHN S, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA SEPTEMBER 18, 2018 DISEMBARK Old meets new in the province's capital (metro-area population a little more than 200,000), with modern office buildings surrounded by heritage shops and colorful row houses. St. John's mixes English and Irish influences, Victorian architecture and modern convenience, and traditional music and rock and roll into a heady brew. The arts scene is lively, but overall the city moves at a relaxed pace. For centuries, Newfoundland was the largest supplier of salt cod in the world, and St. John's Harbour was the center of the trade. As early as 1627, the merchants of Water Street then known as the Lower Path were doing a thriving business buying fish, selling goods, and supplying alcohol to soldiers and sailors. L'ANSE AUX MEADOWS, NEWFOUNDLAND SEPTEMBER 19, :30 PM - 5:30 PM Around the year 1000, Vikings from Greenland and Iceland founded the first European settlement in North America, near the northern tip of Newfoundland. They arrived in the New World 500 years before Columbus but stayed only a few years and were forgotten for centuries. Since the settlement's rediscovery in the last century, the archaeological site has brought tourism to the area. Viking themes abound but so do views, whales, icebergs, fun dining experiences, and outdoor activities. L'Anse Aux Meadows on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland is a remote community of just 40 people, with St Anthony, 40 minutes away, having a population of only 3,500. WOODY POINT, NEWFOUNDLAND SEPTEMBER 20, AM 4 PM Acclaimed for its unearthly landscape, Woody Point is probably as close to Mars as you will ever get in this lifetime. Situated on the west coast of the island, the Tablelands behind Woody Point in the Gros Morne National Park are composed of peridotite like much of the surface of Mars and NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, plus others are studying this unique land form searching for insights into possible bacterial life on the red planet. The story of the Tablelands earned Gros Morne its World Heritage Site status from UNESCO in 2010, and the area remains a geological wonder, showcasing a time when the continents of Africa and North America collided. HAVRE ST. PIERRE, QUEBEC SEPTEMBER 21, AM 6 PM Havre St. Pierre is a tiny seaside port on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec. It was settled in 1857 by Acadians from the Magdalen Island, and still today locals speak a dialect more similar to Acadian French than to Quebec French. It was originally called Saint-Pierre-de-la-Pointe-aux-Esquimaux until 1927, when it was officially shortened to Havre St Pierre. Until recently the local economy relied mainly on fishing and lumbering, today it is mainly a titanium oretranshipment port. Nearby is one of the world s most amazing natural phenomena the Mingan Archipelago. They are the largest group of erosional monoliths in Canada, and were declared a National Park in BONAVENTURE ISLAND, QUEBEC SEPTEMBER 22, :30 AM 5:30 PM Bonaventure Island, on Quebec s Gaspe Peninsula, is an uninhabited island that is home to the largest gannet colony in North America, and the second largest in the world. It was first protected as a bird sanctuary in 1919 by the federal government. Later, in 1973, it became a national park, administered by Canada s National Park Service. Explorer Jacques Cartier noted seeing gannets as he sailed past in One report in 1887 estimated 3,000 birds. Today, there are more than eighty thousand gannets, along with many other seabird species that nest on the island. Gannets are long-lived birds (more than 20 years), that return to the same nest year after year. ÎLES-DE-LA-MADELEINE, QUEBEC SEPTEMBER 23, :30 AM 5 PM The Îles-de-la-Madeleine, or 'Magdalen Islands', form a small archipelago in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence with a land area of square miles ( square kilometres). Though closer to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, the islands form part of the Canadian province of Quebec. Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine encompass eight major islands: Havre-Aubert, Grande Entrée, Cap aux Meules, Grosse-Île, Havre aux Maisons, Pointe-Aux-Loups, Île d'entrée and Brion. All except Brion are inhabited. Several other tiny islands are also considered part of the archipelago: Rocher aux Oiseaux; Île aux Loups-marins; Île Paquet; and Rocher du Corps Mort. LOUISBOURG, NOVA SCOTIA SEPTEMBER 24, AM 5 PM Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, is a thriving seaport located on the eastern tip of Cape Breton Island. French settlers first arrived in Louisbourg in 1713, using the island as a base for their lucrative cod fishery. Soon, the town became one of the busiest harbours in North America and an important trading outpost and military hub. They named it Louisbourg, in honour of King

Louis XIV. The fortress was built to defend against the threat of a British invasion. After two major attacks, the fortress was destroyed in the 1760 s. In 1961 the Canadian Government commenced a $25 million reconstruction project to restore portions of the fortress to its pre-siege glory of the 1740 s. SABLE ISLAND, NOVA SCOTIA SEPTEMBER 25, PM 5 PM This crescent-shaped island is little more than a sandbar emerging from the shallows of the continental shelf. The island is 26 miles long, but only 0.93 miles across at the widest point. The name comes from the French word for "sand". There are no natural trees on the island, although the Canadian government planted over 80,000 trees in 1901 in an attempt to stabilize the soil all but one has since died. The island s human history spans more than four centuries. There was a failed attempt in the 16th century by the French to colonise the island using convicts. ST. PIERRE, FRANCE SEPTEMBER 26, AM 5 PM By heading almost due east from Cap-aux-Meules in Canada, it is possible to reach France in about one day s worth of steaming! With barely 6,000 inhabitants living on tiny St. Pierre, it is the smallest French Overseas Collective. The residents of St. Pierre are predominantly descendants of Normans, Basque and Bretons and the French spoken is closer to Metropolitan French than to Canadian French. Although Basque is not spoken any longer, the influence is still felt through sport and a Basque Festival. Interestingly, this small island has two museums in part dedicated to the Prohibition. The Musée Heritage is St. Pierre s newest museum with a focus on medical artefacts from the 19th and 20th century. ST.
