16 Why Eastern Slovakia REGIONAL ACCESSIBILITY ROAD TRANSPORT Transit - Eastern Slovakia Eastern Slovakia has a fairly developed and constantly growing infrastructure of motorways, dual carriageways, and roads of European significance. In the near future, the region will see motorway bypasses around Prešov and Košice (extended towards Ukraine), which are currently under construction. The city of Košice is directly connected to the Hungarian border by motorway (the Milhosť Tornyosnémeti border crossing). The Prešov region borders with Poland (the main border crossing for haulage and passenger transport being at Vyšný Komárnik - Barwinek) and Ukraine (the main border crossing for passenger transport being at Ubľa Malyj Bereznyj). The Košice region borders with Ukraine (the main border crossing for haulage being at Vyšné Nemecké Užhorod) and Hungary (the main border crossings for haulage and passenger transport being at Milhosť Tornyosnémeti and Slovenské Nové Mesto Sátoraljaújhely). 18 Why Eastern Slovakia REGIONAL ACCESSIBILITY RAIL TRANSPORT Railway Lines in Eastern Slovakia There are several railway passengers companies, both state and private owned, that offer transport to many European cities, such as Paris, Berlin, Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, Kiev, Moscow, Vienna and many others, some of them with direct access. Railway freight transport is a significant carrier of raw materials and products. One of the most important crossings of railway transfer is located in south-eastern Slovakia Čierna nad Tisou, which enables to transport goods and materials from Russia, Ukraine and Asian countries to the West of the Europe. The railway connection with Budapest and Bratislava allows goods to be transported by ship transport on the Danube river. 19 Wide-gauge railway line Railway freight transport is a significant carrier of raw materials and products of the business sector. Uzhgorod - Haniska railway line is a wide-gauge railway line from Uzhgorod to Haniska in Košice, which was built mainly for the transport of iron ore to the former VSŽ (nowadays U.S. Steel). Uzhgorod - Haniska railway line starts in Uzhgorod, Ukraine, and after 8 kilometers, enters the territory of the Slovak Republic and after 2 more kilometers enters the Maťovce railway station. The track continues in parallel with the normal track from Veľké Kapušany via Trebišov. In the village of Kalša it joins the two-track route from Čierna nad Tisou to Košice, it passes along the village of Barca and ends in Haniska, where a depot was built for the needs of a wide-gauge railway. In 1978, the track was additionally electrified throughout the section with a single-track traction system of 3 kv. Maximum speed there is set to 60km/h. The minimal radius is 400 m and the total length of the railway is 87 km. The maximal weight of trains is almost 4500 tons.

20 Why Eastern Slovakia REGIONAL ACCESSIBILITY AIR TRANSPORT There are a couple of international airports in Eastern Slovakia, namely in Košice and Poprad Tatry. The smaller of the two, Poprad Tatry Airport is particularly important for tourists travelling to the Tatra Mountains. The Košice airport has recently seen a boom in the numbers of connections, destinations, and passengers. At the moment, the airport offers direct flights to the following cities: Bratislava (Czech Airlines) Cologne (Wizz Air) Tel Aviv (Wizz Air) Doncaster Sheffield (Wizz Air) Istanbul Ataturk (Turkish Airlines) Kiev (Czech Airlines) London Luton (Wizz Air) Prague (Czech Airlines) Warsaw (LOT Polish Airlines) Vienna (Austrian Airlines) DONCASTER SHEFFIELD WARSAW LONDON LUTON KIEV COLOGNE PRAGUE KOŠICE VIENNA BRATISLAVA ISTANBUL ATATURK TEL AVIV 20 Israel

74 Industries MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Slovakia is known as a country with a strong position and tradition in the field of engineering, which is the draught-horse of all industrial production in Slovakia. Its strongest sector is automobile production, and therefore the conjunction between the largest engineering companies and companies in the automotive branch is considerable. Engineering in Eastern Slovakia employs more than 16,000 people, the majority with a focus on high-tech and medium high-tech production, and on the regional level this field is a source of employment and economic growth. Significant trends in the area of incoming investments come especially from product and regional diversification, growth of investments into research, development and more sophisticated services and the gradual transition toward operations with a higher share of robotization and automation. Since 2010 the Automation Technology and Robotics Cluster (AT+R) has operated in Košice, which aims to deepen the region s focus in this area. The Technical University in Košice has educated qualified professionals in its Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for more than 60 years now. 76 Industries AUTOMOTIVE In the middle of the last century Slovakia was still primarily an agrarian country. In the last 20 years, however, the country has become a Mecca of automobile production. After Volkswagen, KIA Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroën, now Jaguar Land Rover is arriving in Slovakia; thus, the country even further reinforces its dominant position in this sector even further, when it already ranks among the world leaders in terms of the number of automobiles manufactured per capita. The boom in the automobile industry did not pass by Eastern Slovakia, and at present we find here a whole range of well known manufacturers supplying their products for automobile brands from around the entire world. The production of gearboxes and driving mechanisms, the electro technology industry, the production of plastic accessories and the processing of textiles and leather for automobile interiors all have representation in the segment. The pedigree of these factories is indeed cosmopolitan, with investors from Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, Japan and the USA all represented. Manufacturing halls are often concentrated in newly built industrial parks, and currently more than 11,000 people in the region work in this sector. 78 Industries METALLURGICAL INSDUSTRY The history of metallurgical production and the processing of metals in the Eastern Slovakia region dates back to medieval times, and their development was initially based in particular on local resources of iron ore and other precious metals. As early as in the 16th century an iron plant was established near Košice, and it was owned by the town until the mid-19th century. Today the flagship of metallurgy in the region and for all of Slovakia is without a doubt the factory owned by American concern U. S. Steel, which is the successor to the Eastern Slovakia Steel Works established in Košice back in The production capacity of the plant represents a volume of up to 4.5 tonnes of steel annually. More than 11,000 residents of the Eastern Slovakia region currently work in the metallurgical industry. A source of a qualified labour force for the sector since 1952 has been the Technical University in Košice and its Faculty of Metallurgy and Faculty of Mining, in which research and development workplaces are closely linked with practice. 80 Industries ICT The dynamic boom in IT services in Eastern Slovakia at the threshold of the new millennium has shifted this region to the forefront, with the city of Košice among the top destinations, with a high concentration of companies focused on the ICT business. The main reasons for new investments in this field were in particular the quality labour force and the wages, which are relatively low from a global point of view. Currently, the IT sector in Eastern Slovakia employs around 11,000 people, but the long-term prognosis of the Košice IT Valley Association optimistically estimates that by year 2020 this number could approach 15,000. Demand for these professionals is always strong and unemployment is practically non-existent in this sector. For further advancement of the segment the key question now is the quality of human resources and the close connection of practice with the teaching of students, which is currently offered in the region in particular by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics at the Technical University of Košice and the Faculty of Science at P. J. Šafárik University in Košice. Selection of Largest Companies Within the Sector Company Location Key product Revenue in thousands Investor T-Systems Slovakia s.r.o. 82 Industries ENERGY INDUSTRIES AND WASTE MANAGEMENT From the times of the industrial revolution the importance of energy, a common denominator for nearly all human activities, has been growing. Eastern Slovakia was among the first regions in this part of Europe to be electrified. Municipalities in the area around Prešov enjoyed this privilege as early as the start of the 20th century, and it is interesting to note that in 1902 the company Siemens-Schuckert built a steam-driven power plant in Poprad. At present Východoslovenská distribučná, a.s., has more than 600,000 electricity off-take points in the region to energy distribution and supplies of electricity and natural gas. After entry of the German investor RWE in 2003 the level of investments in the VSE Holding Group has exceeded more than EUR 500 million. More than 90 % of the region s residents also have access to the functioning natural gas network. Companies focused on the production and distribution of heat as well as waste management companies are also working in the segment. The most significant of these is KOSIT, which annually handles more than 100,000 tonnes of waste and is ranked among the 5 largest Slovak companies dealing with this difficult and socially sensitive sector. 106 Real Estate & Locations EASTERN SLOVAKIA REAL ESTATE & LOCATIONS STOCKS IN SLOVAKIA DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPACES Development of industrial and logistics premises in all major markets in Europe was positive in 2016 and this trend is noticeable in Slovakia as well. Slovakia has reinforced its position in the automotive industry and remains attractive for both suppliers and logistics companies. The automotive industry has a strong tradition in Slovakia and has become the most important sector and driving force of the Slovak economy. The recent Jaguar Land Rover entry, now the fourth automotive producer in the market continued the trend. The market also experienced stronger investment activity in industrial and logistic premises. At the end of 2016, total modern industrial supply of A Grade premises in Slovakia equalled to 1,800 thousand m². We can consider the turn of the millennium as the start of the most significant building of modern industrial zones, offices and shopping centres of Eastern Slovakia, even though we can see an even more dynamic period in the past 10 years. While Košice, the metropolis of the region, is clearly the dominant location in office space, other individual districts are more equally represented in the retail segment. Industrial zones have originated as brown field parks in original infrastructure or as new areas with the support of the state in places where the government decided to support employment and regional development with variety of stimulus packages. 108 Real Estate & Locations EASTERN SLOVAKIA REAL ESTATE & LOCATIONS PRICE MAP In 2016, the Retail market in Slovakia recorded an acceleration in growth, due to the macroeconomic situation and innovation in the retailing industry itself. The Slovak economy continued to register GDP growth, propelling lower unemployment and rising real wages and bolstering demand overall. Consumers have become more willing to spend money than they were in the past. With a glance at a price map, we can see the natural price difference between Bratislava, the most economically mature region in Slovakia, and the Eastern Slovakia region. The price interval takes into consideration the attractiveness of a locality, the degree of facilities and the range of accessory services. 115

116 Health Care FACTS & FIGURES Healthcare in Eastern Slovakia is currently going through a phase of rapid development owing to a number of restructuring and modernisation processes, which are mostly funded using private resources. Most of the hospitals in the region are run by private companies. According to the survey carried out by the independent institute INEKO last year, the top three positions were taken by three general hospitals situated in Eastern Slovakia in Poprad, Košice-Šaca, and Stará Ľubovňa. At the end of the year 2015, Eastern Slovakia had 4,419 primary health care facilities, 371 secondary (institutional) care units, and around 50 inpatient facilities, some of which are specialised or spa-type facilities. With regard to certain indicators pertaining to the number of health care professionals per 100,000 inhabitants, Eastern Slovakia is a leading region that comes right after the Bratislava region, where a high number of nationwide specialised facilities are situated. The same holds true for the number of hospital beds in fact, according to NUTS2, Eastern Slovakia often boasts higher figures in comparison to the surrounding regions in terms of indicators.
