6 A ship of great distinction I had higher-than-usual hopes prior to my cruise on Uniworld s new River Beatrice [and it] delivered on Uniworld s promise. Crew were marvellously attentive and the ship is one of the most beautiful I ve seen, with hallways lined in silk and a collection of original artwork meals, which beautifully incorporated tastes from the places we visited along the Danube, were consistently delicious. As we passed by numerous riverboats operated by other cruise lines there wasn t a ship that compared with River Beatrice. Cruise Critic 2009, Carolyn Spencer Brown, Editor in Chief Visegrad on the Danube, Hungary Guest testimonials The itinerary was amazing! I started in Prague such a beautiful city with so much history. Cruising the Danube and visiting the quaint villages and towns of Eastern Europe was a fantastic experience and my highlight, though Vienna and Budapest were just as magical Uniworld s staff and guides made the tour extra special and memorable. ML, Australia 2011 From what we have heard of other people cruising with competitive companies, we were very fortunate to have chosen Uniworld. We had a wonderful time with no stress or anxiety, just a delightful extended cruise. BC, USA 2010 such a rich learning experience. There is a lot to be said for docking in a town, walking off the boat, and instantly becoming a part of the charm each destination has to offer a winning formula. LM, USA 2010 More legroom, more luxury Travelling on an Insight Vacations luxury touring coach, with its customised design and smooth comfortable high-deck ride, promises to be an experience unlike any other. Perhaps most importantly, they are restricted to 40 guests so, with the surplus seats removed, they give you an amount of leg room usually reserved for business class. Naturally, the same level of attention has been paid to planning your escorted tour, ensuring it is packed with premium highlights and led by a tour director who is both knowledgeable and personable. Your accommodation needs will be met by premium brand hotels and the included meals will be a delicious mix of international and local cuisine. 6

8 Savour the flavours Whether you are enjoying the splendour of the River Beatrice or superb hotel accommodation, there is only one thing to be left up to you: get a good night s sleep. You will see from this snapshot of some of the destinations, that you will want to be at your best to maximise the delights each day promises. Prague Known as the City of a Hundred Spires, it sits astride the Vltava River, in central Bohemia, and was the capital city of the Holy Roman Empire. Art Noveau, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance, Cubist, Neo- Classical Praha (in Czech) is architecturally perhaps without equal. Passau Sitting astride 3 rivers in Lower Bavaria, about 50,000 people call this town home (around 10,000 are university students). An ancient Roman colony, it s the quintessential river town and home of the world s second-largest church organ. Vienna 1.7 million live within the city limits. It s Austria s biggest by far, hosts the United Nations, and its centre is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded around 500 BC, Vienna ( Wien ) is considered the last great capital for nineteenth century balls and hosts over 200 each year. Bratislava Capital of the Slovak Republic, it borders Austria and Hungary (the only national capital to border two countries). Settlement began around 5000 BC; today s architecture is an intriguing contrast of medieval towers and grand modern buildings. Budapest Hungary s capital has 1.7 million inhabitants, occupies both banks of the Danube and became a single city in 1873 (joining Buda, Obuda and Pest). One of Europe s most beautiful cities, it hosts around 80 geo - thermal springs and seemingly countless noteworthy and historic buildings. Vukovar Croatia s biggest river port, located where the Vuka and the Danube rivers meet. Settled around 6th century BC, it was devastated during the War of Independence and though much has been rebuilt, the scars can still be found. Belgrade Capital of Serbia, it is the birthplace of prehistoric culture. It is rich with historic sites, museums and wildly varying architecture. A renowned tertiary centre, Belgrade University has 90,000 enrolments (one of Europe s largest). Sofia Bulgaria s capital with 1.4 million people, it is a prehistoric settle - ment with the town hosting many museums, a renowned mineral spring and walls dating before the 7th century BC. Rila Bulgaria s largest (and most striking) monastery sits in a wondrous mountain range with spectacular panoramas. Truly alpine, this area features many glacial lakes and hot springs. Plovdiv Bulgaria s second largest city, with about 380,000 citizens, has roots stretching over an astounding 6,000 years. Not unsurprisingly, it has 200+ archaeological sites (and an asteroid named in its honour). Istanbul Previously Byzantium and Constantinople, it is Turkey s largest city with nearly 13 million inhabitants and a settlement beginning before the Bosphorus Strait was even formed. It now extends into both Europe and Asia the only city in the world to be situated in two continents. It has hot humid summers and snow in winter. 10 Where east meets west For decades it was impossible to experience the magic and mystery hidden in Eastern Europe but Uniworld and Insight have combined to let you explore Prague for three wonder-packed days and further east for another nine. Just imagine immersing yourself in the diversity that Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey offer these are lands absolutely laden with history. Distant, enigmatic, timeworn the beauty is not always readily obvious in the first two of these destinations but you will delight in digging a little deeper to discover their unique and boundless intrigues. Romania gives you the opportunity to see how a true peasant culture prevails (probably stronger than anywhere else in Europe) and, amazingly, how a medieval way of life is still prevalent in the countryside. A country of striking natural beauty, it boasts centuries-old villages, architectural treasures, wonderfully painted monasteries, and perhaps the most infamous castle in the world: Dracula s Bran castle in Transylvania. Many claim it to be the most beautiful country in Eastern-Europe and it is listed as the third most biologically diverse area in the world. After succumbing to five centuries of Ottoman rulers and 40 years of Iron Curtain communism, Bulgaria is finally open. And you might feel it has almost been worth the wait as you tour this land of fabulous icons, multi-coloured monasteries, and timber-framed villages. However, it is not without stunning natural sights, and the Belogradchik formations are among the foremost. Sculptured for over 200 million years, they are a wondrous formation of rocks and a superb foil to the many other man-made points of interest in the other places you will visit, including Rila s monastery, Plovdiv and the feature-packed capital, Sofia. Next, one of the world s biggest cities: Istanbul. This mosaic of minarets, mosques, and bazaars dates from over a thousand years but today it teems with modern-day inhabitants living amongst an abundance of breathtakingly beautiful buildings. A glorious mix of an Old City and a New one, Istanbul sits astride the Bosporus Strait, bringing an incense and spice-infused Asian influence to your European adventure. And then there s Central Europe s most exciting city: Prague. Also not long opened to tourists, it has emerged as a spell-binding mix of baroque architecture and medieval dwellings, set on winding cobblestone streets. It is so old that it s New Town dates from the 14th century and this heritage can be found almost every time you turn a corner. And you will enjoy an extensive bar and café scene unrivalled in Eastern Europe. Built in a strategic position on seven hills, home to glorious leaders and centuries of culture Istanbul has similarities with other great cities but its delightful differences are far more apparent. These expertly crafted pre- or post-cruise experiences will fill your memorybank to overload as your every question is answered by local, Englishspeaking guides. The only disappointment is likely to be that your Extraordinary Europe adventure is over all too soon. 10 St. Peters, Vienna, Austria
